I never noticed how severe Peavy’s lefty-righty splits are:

Statistics are courtesy of Baseball-Reference and are through games of May 13, 2008.
2007 .174 .228 .251 .242 .314 .372
2008 .174 .231 .248 .268 .351 .451
career .216 .271 .332 .247 .322 .423

For his career, Peavy turns righties into Juan Castro; lefties hit him more like Graig Nettles or Ruppert Jones. Guess that’s probably why he’s been working on the change-up…

Interesting lineup tonight. Hairston playing CF and leading off but Kouzmanoff, despite killing LHP, is batting down in the 5th hole after Iguchi, Giles, and AGon. Huber gets the start in LF and Bard batting 8th at C.

I’d prefer to see Jake in the #7 hole and Huber in the #9.

(again with the slow refresh rate tonight)

Way OT … but since Ducksnorts at one time was getting its most hits from folks looking for info about tacos … I bring you this news from LA …

Considering the previous pitch where Soriano flailed away an outside slider that wasn’t even close to being a strike (even Khalil probably thought he chased that pitch) I’m guessing that Jake didn’t want to throw the fastball right down the middle there.

Kinda ugly that Lilly struck out the side on 16 pitches… this guy is struggling, lets get some hits.

Scott Kazmir signed a contract extension with the Rays, 3 years for $28.5m with a team option for 2012 at $11m. Another great signing for the Rays. They are going to be a dangerous team for the next few seasons — of course they better be since they’ve drafted in the top 5 practically every season since 2000 since they’ve been so terrible.

We were talking about the Padres draft success (or lack thereof) on the daily entry. Here’s a quick article on the Padres 1st round futility since 2000:

The man Peavy had to have and should have had was Reed Johnson. He nibbled with Johnson and lost him.

Brenly on WGN comments on Strikeout /Wild pitch that gave Lilly first base ” Kind of a lackadaisical attempt by Bard to block that pitch. He made no effort to get down and block that ball”…..

#11@JP: With the pitcher up next, you are going to nibble. I dont think he planned on strike 3 being a WP to Lilly. Kind of just bad luck there.

Just how valuable is Josh Bard right now to this team ? How good is he right now defensively ? When will the guy start hitting ? Will he get better ?

We saw Luke Carlin throw out a runner with CY on the mound the other night. We see Carlins hustle out there and how his body language shows leader.

I don’t know, you can’t help but wonder.

#13@SDSUBaseball: I know what your saying but Reed Johnson can’t turn on a sidewheeling right hander like Jake and looked foolish in the at bat. But it’s apparent that Peavy doesn’t have it tonight.

    Posted May 14, 2008 at 5:55 pm | Permalink

#19@JP: Yeah, if production from Carlin and Bard are going to be equal, might as well just throw Carlin out there. Bard could probably steal on Bard.

    Also, what’s up with Peavy.

Not sure if that was a strike, but it was close enough to swing and foul it off. Giles should no better than that, sometimes it looks like he is looking for a walk more than a hit. Watching strike 3 should result in a fine haha

The umpire was awful tonight. He called more than one pitch in the opposite batter’s box a strike.
