Yes, the strikeout rate continues to fall, and yes, it’s scarier to watch him do his job now than it was a decade ago, but let the record show that Trevor Hoffman‘s ERA has been below 3.00 every season except one since 1996.
Eventually the magic will disappear, and that will be a sad time for all of us. Is this the year? Could be wishful thinking on my part, but I don’t think so: 60 IP, 2.70 ERA.
I’m with you. 55 IP, 2.60 ERA, 45 K, 35 SV.
I do think they will use Bell a little bit more in the 9th to limit Trevor’s innings, since Bell is a horse and Trev is usually better when he’s rested (and not warmed up 3 separate times in the same game).
50IP 2.79ERA 30 SV
45IP 3.69 ERA
I think they control his IP even more this year then ever before.
56IP 2.89 ERA 40K’s
With five precincts reporting: 53 IP, 2.93 ERA.
Delicate balance here… Trevor needs to work enough for his arm to stay in mid-season form… for the change to work, he can’t overthrow it. In other words, too much rest is actually detrimental. His fastball flattens out even worse (it doesn’t move that much to begin with) and his change doesn’t have it’s flutter…
35 saves and a 2.70 sound about right.
Would you guys trade Chase Headley for Felix Pie? The Padres need a long-term answer in CF and a Pie for Brian Roberts swap keeps getting mentioned. I’m wondering about a 3-way trade with the O’s getting Headley, Cubs getting Roberts, and us getting Pie. There might need to be other prospects involved…
Last year Pie just killed AAA in 55 games to the tune of .362/.410/.563–as a 22 year old. I think that the Padres would do the deal, and maybe the O’s also-the Cubs might need a prospect thrown in.
Great questions from the MadFriars to Corey Brock …

Trevor ETA Hoffman: A sandman-esque 55 inning, 3.62 ERA.
Interesting idea with Pie, but I can’t see the Cubs doing it for what they get in return. I’m guessing we’d have to throw the prospect if that were the case, so it would depend on who it was.
Also saw this in a random article about Keith Foulke signing with the A’s:

Did anyone else know that we were interested? I hadn’t heard anything about it.
I don’t want to mess with the compilation stats but I’m gonna go 21 innings, 3.23 ERA, 18 saves, 20 K’s and has career ending shoulder surgery. Hope I’m wrong….
And the wet blanket of the day goes to …
yep…..sorry about that. Like I said, hope I’m wrong. I usually am.
12. No worries, just having a little fun.
50IP 5.00ERA 25K’s 30 Saves
52 innings, 3.03 era
49 1/3 IP, 3.63 ERA, 35 K’s. Just enough left to hold onto the closer job and ride off into the sunset.
With 10 precincts reporting: 49 IP, 3.32 ERA, 34 K.
60 IP, 2.89, 45K, 42 sv.
Just another normal year
55 IP, 2.99, 44K, 40 saves
55 IP, 2.90 ERA, 40 K, 35 SV
50 IP 2.90 ERA
53 IP 3.30 ERA
