Game #144
time: 7:10 p.m. PT

sp: Justin Germano (7-9, 4.38) vs Chad Billingsley (10-4, 3.22)

  • Five years ago I was concerned about Jake Peavy’s lefty/righty splits, optimistic about Adam Eaton’s recovery from surgery, and drinking Eureka Black and Tan and MacTarnahan’s Blackwatch Cream Porter.
  • Two years ago I still liked Eaton’s chances to blossom into a front-line starter.
  • Last year I was amused to see Paul McAnulty wearing a jersey that had his name misspelled.

Time flies when you’re having fun. Go Padres!

Sorry, guys, Barrett’s is starting at catcher. So we’re doomed. Might as well not play the game.

  2. Richard Says:

1: Well, at least Billingsley is on my fantasy team.

    Current score: 0
  3. Schlom Says:

Not good numbers for the Padres and the starting pitchers. The Dodgers are hitting 340/435/491 in 58 ABs vs. Germano. The Padres 200/250/247 in 87 ABs vs. Billingsley.

  4. Phantom Says:

3: It doesn’t help that we’ve run out our scrubs against Billinsgley all year.

1: It would be really nice to see Barrett turn in a strong performance.

  5. Phantom Says:

My God, Colorado is OBLITERATING Philly.

  6. Field39 Says:

1: Barrett is a poor defensive catcher, he has not hit since he got here, he refuses to be walked, and on the rare occasion that he got a chance to a score a run, he chose to make an out. He may not lose the game single handedly, but he certainly will not help to win the game.
If Bard needs a rest, I would rather see Colt.

  7. Ben B. Says:

5: The craziest part about that game is that the Rockies started Denny Bautista, then went to Mark Redman, and the Phillies still didn’t score any runs.

    Current score: 0
  8. Phantom Says:

    7: That is indeed shocking.

  9. Ben B. Says:

6: And his OPS+ last year was 121.

  10. Phantom Says:

OG put a charge into that one.

WTF Cameron? What were you looking at?

  11. Phantom Says:

Nice quick inning by Germano. We need to work Billingsley for some freakin walks.

    Current score: 0
  12. Ben B. Says:

In his two previous starts against us, Billingsley threw 7 innings both times, not allowing any runs and finishing with 88 and 95 pitches thrown. We’re well on the way to giving him 7 more easy, low pitch count innings tonight.

Barrett continues his futility at the plate.

Good patience by Sledge to turn the lineup over for next inning.

This is so unlike last nights game, so far.

  19. Phantom Says:

Our outfielders are seriously stinking up the joint right now.

  20. Sean Callahan Says:

Anyone heard why the strike zone has disappeared from GameDay?

  21. Ben B. Says:

Haha, I was just about to complain about pitchouts never working for us.

    Current score: 0
  22. Rain Delay Says:

20: Maybe because the Umping has been abysmal at times this year, and they don’t want to deal with it. There for, taking it out of game day is just one more way to hide how horrible it’s been at times?

I don’t know..but that sounds good right? lol

  23. Sean Callahan Says:

22: I think you’re right - I’m just wondering if MLB is trying to spin it another way….

  24. Rick Schroder (Turbine Dude) Says:

We need to capitalize on this current situation!

    Current score: 0
  25. Ben B. Says:

Barrett didn’t strike out or ground into a double play!

    Current score: 0
  26. Phantom Says:

25: He wanted to make sure SLedge had that chance.

    Current score: 0
  27. Schlom Says:

Who couldn’t see that coming by Sledge?

    Current score: 0
  28. Ben B. Says:

At least it the run still scored? I was definitely seeing a situation where Sledge struck out and Germano grounded into a double play.

    Current score: 0
  29. Rick Schroder (Turbine Dude) Says:

I winced as Sledge came to the plate for that one. Same feeling I always get when Silent L comes up with bases loaded and no outs.

    Current score: 0
  30. Ben B. Says:

Sledge grounded into double plays in 14.6% of the opportunities presented to him. Blum does it 19.6% of the time, and Bard 20.5% (they lead the team).

    Current score: 0
  31. Schlom Says:

Here’s more ammo for the Blame Barrett crowd — the Padres are 8-18 in games he has started. So they are 70-47 (.598) when he doesn’t start, .308 (!) when he does. So maybe we will have to blame him if the Padres miss the postseason!

    Current score: 0
  32. Sean Callahan Says:

But how many of those wins and losses were prior to him even being on the team?

    Current score: 0
  33. Schlom Says:

Loney has just killed the Padres this season — luckily the Dodgers will probably sign some expensive old guy to play 1B next season.

    Current score: 0
  34. Ben B. Says:

Half of the fly balls Germano has allowed have gone over the fence.

    Current score: 0
  35. Ben B. Says:

Loney is hitting .360/.448/.560 against the Padres this year.

    Current score: 0
  36. Schlom Says:

32: That record was only for games started for the Padres since he was traded here on June 21st. I actually missed one game, they are 8-19 total which makes the winning percentages 603 and 296. He started off horribly, with losses in 10 of his first 12 starts and 14 of the first 19. Since August 2nd they are 3-3 so he’s getting better.

Of course, I’m not blaming him for the losses, that was more of a joke. It’s a team game so you can’t blame one player.

  37. Jeremy Says:

Wow! Cameron is seriously having a rough time! That’s three :(

    Current score: 0
  38. Sean Callahan Says:

36: I know it’s a joke, but I was referring to the 70-47 mark. Unfortunately, taking their record of 41-29 on the 21st would make them 29-17 since the trade in games he hasn’t started (.630), so it’s even worse then I suspected.

    Current score: 0
  39. Ben B. Says:

For a Gameday watcher, how did Pierre double on a sharp grounder to Khalil?

    Current score: 0
  40. Phantom Says:

39: It was down the third base line, Gameday got it wrong.

    Current score: 0
  41. Phantom Says:

Khalil 3 for 3 tonite. Unfortunately he’s leading off the innings, rather than hitting in the middle of the rallies.

    Current score: 0
  42. Schlom Says:

Barrett is hitting 257/264/323 in his starts so he has been pretty bad but I guess it could be worse. His total lack of patience (1 walk) and power (only 7 extra-base hits, all doubles) has really hurt. But it’s not his offense that’s killing them. I’m not a big believer in catcher’s ability to affect a pitcher’s ERA so I think it’s just a coincidence that they’ve been so poor when he starts.

  43. Rick Schroder (Turbine Dude) Says:

    Nice little pop for Kouz.

    Current score: 0
  44. Ben B. Says:

Kouz has had some outstanding at bats tonight. 2-2 with a walk, and he’s seen 21 pitches.

    Current score: 0
  45. Phantom Says:

Khalil and Kouz keep setting the table, but nobody behind them wants to get them in.

    Current score: 0
  46. Schlom Says:

He can redeem himself right now!

    Current score: 0
  47. dprat Says:

Kouz & Khalil 5-5; rest of team 0-15.

    Current score: 0
  48. Ben B. Says:

45: I’d blame the people in front of them more than the people behind them. The 7-8-9 hitters are supposed to suck; the 2-3-4 hitters are supposed to be the best guys on the team.

    Current score: 0
  49. Schlom Says:

Well, he couldn’t come through. Maybe one of the other Padre “goats” can come through.

    Current score: 0
  50. Ben B. Says:

Excuse me, I blame the people in front of them for not getting on to be driven in more than I blame the people behind them for not driving them in.

    Current score: 0
  51. Schlom Says:

Guess that would be too much to ask. At least there was two outs so Sledge didn’t (or couldn’t) hit into a double play!

    Current score: 0
  52. Ben B. Says:

At least Sledge and Barrett have a walk each. The three best hitters on the team are 0-9 with no walks.

    Current score: 0
  53. JP Says:

Yeah but Sledge has only disappointed us 45.56% of the time while B(l)um has let us down 48.4% of the time.

  54. Rick Schroder (Turbine Dude) Says:

When is Buddy going to pull Justin?

  55. Rick Schroder (Turbine Dude) Says:

    #55: Hampson warming up.

  56. Bruce Says:

It sure is nice to see Kouz with a .260 BA.

    Current score: 0
  57. Schlom Says:

Well, this was always going to be a tough matchup. They haven’t hit Billingsley at all and Germano had been bad against the Dodgers. Ideally you’d like to win every game but it’s not realistic. Take the loss and come back strong tomorrow.

    Current score: 0
  58. Sean Callahan Says:

Billingsley should be done, so a little bullpen whooping might get us back in the game….

    Current score: 0
  59. JP Says:

I don’t care if it’s a righty or lefty on the mound over these next 18 games, I want a Hairston/Clark out in left until Bradley is back.

    Current score: 0
  60. Rick Schroder (Turbine Dude) Says:

#57: Should be interesting with Maddux up against Boomer tommorow. I’m glad it’s not a day game!

  61. Oside Jon Says:

Holy Friar…..I leave for a BLT or two and we’re losing 6-1. Post’s sound defeated. Night is still early……………..

Random note: Turmoil Sludge is worthless.

  62. Ben B. Says:

59: Hairston this year is hitting .239/.309/.421 with the benefit of a great hitters park for a home stadium for most of those. That’s terrible. In 67 at bats this year, Clark has hit .239/.320/.299. In 415 at bats last year, Clark hit .263/.348/.335. Those are all some bad numbers. For Hairston, a positive indicator is the way he destroyed AAA, but Sledge has that same positive indicator from last year also. Bottom line, none of these guys have produced at all at the major league level, so you might as well go with a Sledge/Hairston platoon to go with upside and put the guys in the best possible situations to succeed.

    Current score: 0
  63. Schlom Says:

I’m with JP. I don’t think it’s worth dragging Sledge out there for starts — he just doesn’t look like he’s going to hit. I’d try Hairston out there and hope that he gets hot, at least he has some power.

I didn’t realize Saenz was so fat. He’s looks like El Guapo’s (Rich Garces) brother. Could you imagine seeing Saenz and Wells coming out of an elevator and saying to yourself “Those are professional athletes.” Yikes.

  64. Ben B. Says:

    Best three hitters now 0-12.

  65. Rick Schroder (Turbine Dude) Says:

    Who the hell is Myrow?

    Current score: 0
  66. Ben B. Says:

He’s a AAAA hitter who tore up AAA this year. His career minor league stats are .305/.426/.509, but he’s never really gotten a chance in the majors.

Ooh, impressive 5 k night by Cameron.

  68. Phantom Says:

Ugly came. Black should never EVER start Sledge again. Ever.

    Current score: 0
  69. Ben B. Says:

Tough to win when your three best hitters go 0-15. Good nights by Kouz, Greene, and Meredith. Good matchup tomorrow night with Maddux v. Wells, gotta to win then.

    Current score: 0
  70. Ben B. Says:

68: Why are we blaming this loss on Sledge? Did I miss something important and bad that he did (actually a serious question, as I was following on Gameday)?

    Current score: 0
  71. Zagz Says:

70: Bases loaded, no outs, Padres down 2-0, Sledge hits into the double play. The guy is nothing but worthless, however I’m going to put an equal share of the blame on Barrett who left 5 on base, and Germano who has clearly turned back into a pumpkin.

    Current score: 0
  72. SDSUBaseball Says:

70: Bad defense, bad at the plate.

Is Hairston ready yet? I would rather see Clark than Sledge
