IGD: Padres @ Mets (23 Aug 07)

Game #126
time: 4:10 p.m. PT
tv: 4SD
sp: Justin Germano (6-7, 4.18) vs Tom Glavine (11-6, 4.12)
pre: Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com

It’s amazing to think that these two pitchers have combined to win 308 games in the big leagues. What’s that? Tom Glavine accounts for 301 of those? Yes, I know. I’m sorry, did you have a point?

Who would have thought that Glavine would have just barely a better ERA than Germano at this point?

I guess we should cool it with how hard we are on the poor kid.

Beans, Khalil sends it to the warning track for nothing.

Sounds like Milton just barely missed going yard.

We should be able to hit Glavine.

8: ISO is Isolated Power, which measures the “true power” of a batter. The formula is SLG-BA. Something that Khalil has plenty of.

I want to get back to something that we were discussing on the daily post by Geoff, mainly that article by Tim Sullivan in the paper today (since that thread is probably dead now). I’m probably lumped in with the “negative” fans since I’ve been critical of the FO — mostly over the draft and now with that article today. There are three problems related to that article. The first was the statement that “I’ve never signed anyone to a 5 year contract that worked out” by Alderson. Now maybe that’s saying that he’ll only sign Peavy to a 4 year deal but it’s not a good sign of his competence. Is he saying that signing Hanley Ramirez in 2 years to a 5 year deal would be a bad move? If he is, then maybe he shouldn’t be involved at all in contracts. Secondly, the crying poor looks terrible to the fans. You can’t put down your product and expect it to be successful (for the best example of this, look at Bud Selig and his constant negativity toward the game overall). I understand that they aren’t the Yankees or Red Sox but they cannot continually cry about payroll restraints as the fans are going to get fed up. Finally, the Padres have been the best team in the division the past 3 or 4 years so why are they even talking about finances and things down the road? They should be talking about winning, about making the playoffs and actually winning a series. Why are they squandering goodwill with the fans over this nonsense?

Good job by Germano. Now, if only the Padres would stop walking Wright and giving up hits to Beltran….that man just wore out the Padres’ pitching so far.

    Let’s go, Padres. Get Glavine!

I seriously was typing up a joke about how we should intentionally walk Marlon Anderson, because if we didn’t he would homer here.

I blame the walk to Alou for all of this. The bases were loaded, and Alou is right handed, which are the guys Meredith is supposed to destroy, and he walks him to force in a run.

  101. Tom Waits

Pads need to go 22-14 to finish season (.611 (98-64) ball rest of the way) and finish up at 90-72 . which I think puts them in the postseason. The 90 win mark has only been hit 3 times in Padres history !

Brandon Webb is sneaking in at the end of the season and making a huge run for the Cy Young again. He is averaging 7 innings per start, already throwing nearly 192 innings with 166 K’s. The first half seemed like he was going to have a decent year, but his second half has been unhuman

  198. Posted August 24, 2007 at 12:36 am | Permalink

My sole gripe with this game, crazy as it was, was why was KK starting? Germano is not a high strike out guy, relying on his defense. So why have KK? He killed us with his defense. I don’t know if a good glove gets a DP on his error in the 6th, but if so, inning over, we cruise.

Hoffman is scaring me. It does seem like they are hitting good pitches in both blown saves, but man. Either a very unlucky streak or something has shifted.

Could vanish, but sweet to see NOG have a good game, the first one since April, it seems.
