IGD: Padres @ Mets (23 Aug 07)

| sp: | Justin Germano (6-7, 4.18) vs Tom Glavine (11-6, 4.12) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com |
It’s amazing to think that these two pitchers have combined to win 308 games in the big leagues. What’s that? Tom Glavine accounts for 301 of those? Yes, I know. I’m sorry, did you have a point?
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.
August 23, 2007 at 3:45 pm
Who would have thought that Glavine would have just barely a better ERA than Germano at this point?
I guess we should cool it with how hard we are on the poor kid.
August 23, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Looks like Well’s is going to the Dodgers.
August 23, 2007 at 4:12 pm
2: Good. I hope he does well when the Dodgers are playing the Dbacks and be horrible against the Padres.
August 23, 2007 at 4:12 pm
atta boy OG
August 23, 2007 at 4:12 pm
#2: Excellent news!
August 23, 2007 at 4:12 pm
Get em over, Get em in. Please
August 23, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Geez, 2 pitches 2 outs. I expected better out of Jenga.
August 23, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Geoff, fairly new to the stats. What is ISO mean?
August 23, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Let’s go, El Hombre!
August 23, 2007 at 4:16 pm
So far, Gameday is showing Glavine being Glavine, nibbling without hitting the strike zone.
August 23, 2007 at 4:17 pm
Come on, Khalil. Get on base, drive some runs in.
August 23, 2007 at 4:17 pm
Beans, Khalil sends it to the warning track for nothing.
Sounds like Milton just barely missed going yard.
We should be able to hit Glavine.
August 23, 2007 at 4:22 pm
8: ISO is Isolated Power, which measures the “true power” of a batter. The formula is SLG-BA. Something that Khalil has plenty of.
August 23, 2007 at 4:23 pm
13: Thanks.
August 23, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Grr, glad to see we learned not to walk Wright.
August 23, 2007 at 4:25 pm
From Gameday, it looks like Germano got hosed by the ump pitching to Wright.
August 23, 2007 at 4:26 pm
I want to get back to something that we were discussing on the daily post by Geoff, mainly that article by Tim Sullivan in the paper today (since that thread is probably dead now). I’m probably lumped in with the “negative” fans since I’ve been critical of the FO — mostly over the draft and now with that article today. There are three problems related to that article. The first was the statement that “I’ve never signed anyone to a 5 year contract that worked out” by Alderson. Now maybe that’s saying that he’ll only sign Peavy to a 4 year deal but it’s not a good sign of his competence. Is he saying that signing Hanley Ramirez in 2 years to a 5 year deal would be a bad move? If he is, then maybe he shouldn’t be involved at all in contracts. Secondly, the crying poor looks terrible to the fans. You can’t put down your product and expect it to be successful (for the best example of this, look at Bud Selig and his constant negativity toward the game overall). I understand that they aren’t the Yankees or Red Sox but they cannot continually cry about payroll restraints as the fans are going to get fed up. Finally, the Padres have been the best team in the division the past 3 or 4 years so why are they even talking about finances and things down the road? They should be talking about winning, about making the playoffs and actually winning a series. Why are they squandering goodwill with the fans over this nonsense?
August 23, 2007 at 4:27 pm
Both pitchers are getting hit hard early.
August 23, 2007 at 4:30 pm
Beltran is such a thorn in the side.
August 23, 2007 at 4:30 pm
The track meet against our staff continues, but Germano escapes without further damage.
August 23, 2007 at 4:32 pm
Good job by Germano. Now, if only the Padres would stop walking Wright and giving up hits to Beltran….that man just wore out the Padres’ pitching so far.
Let’s go, Padres. Get Glavine!
August 23, 2007 at 4:32 pm
The stolen base by Wright was one that caused a run to score that wouldn’t have otherwise.
August 23, 2007 at 4:33 pm
Why in the world was Beltran stealing third in that situation? Two out and two strikes on the batter? Do you think he owns himself in a fantasy team?
August 23, 2007 at 4:34 pm
Good job going the other way, Kouz.
August 23, 2007 at 4:35 pm
23: Probably.
August 23, 2007 at 4:35 pm
Way to go Koooz.
August 23, 2007 at 4:36 pm
So is NOG going to kill this rally by popping out, striking out, or grounding out to the pitcher?
August 23, 2007 at 4:37 pm
NOG just cannot lay off that first pitch. RBI, come on.
August 23, 2007 at 4:42 pm
#23: Because, against the Padres, he can.
August 23, 2007 at 4:42 pm
17: Just want to let you know someone read your post and agrees with most of it. The part about contracts I agree with as far as “never say never” goes, but after the Klesko and Nevin deals I’d be gun shy, too.
August 23, 2007 at 4:45 pm
Why do people keep attacking Alderson for things that happened before he got here?
August 23, 2007 at 4:46 pm
Adrian makes the 3-6-3 look so easy.
August 23, 2007 at 4:48 pm
Sandy Alomar Jr. is still playing? Surely a return by Rickey to the Mets cannot be far off.
August 23, 2007 at 4:48 pm
Sandy Alomar Jr.? Seriously? Okay, then:
December 6, 1989
Traded Sandy Alomar, Chris James, and Carlos Baerga to the Cleveland Indians. Received Joe Carter.
Signed Craig Lefferts as a free agent.
Signed Fred Lynn as a free agent.
August 23, 2007 at 4:48 pm
31: That’s me. Not sure what happened with the name.
August 23, 2007 at 4:50 pm
34: How old was Lynn then? 56?
August 23, 2007 at 4:51 pm
#36: LOL, something like that. I just know that in one of my first ever Roto drafts, I took James for my farm team over some kid named Bonds. Oops…
August 23, 2007 at 4:54 pm
F word
August 23, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Alomar promptly gives a clinic on how to block the plate. Honestly I didn’t think Reyes would even make a throw.
August 23, 2007 at 4:54 pm
MB’s cleat was blocked by Alomar’s left foot! Wow, he would have been safe if not for that.
August 23, 2007 at 4:55 pm
That was a hell of a play by Alomar. Bradley beat the throw.
August 23, 2007 at 4:55 pm
Interesting that Alomar didn’t stick his foot out until Milton was already into his slide. He waited until he committed before he jammed his foot down for the block.
August 23, 2007 at 4:55 pm
At least we got one run there.
August 23, 2007 at 4:56 pm
Nice play by Alomar, nicer play by Khalil.
August 23, 2007 at 4:57 pm
Khalil hit a pretty good pitch. I think someone told him they’re in Denver…
August 23, 2007 at 4:58 pm
Even though Bradley got thrown out, I like taking the shot there. I like our agression, and I’m glad that Milty didn’t react negatively to the wonderful block by Alomar.
August 23, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Ouch!
August 23, 2007 at 5:04 pm
Nicely done by Khalil even if it didn’t record the out.
August 23, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Damn. Blown call extends the inning.
August 23, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Oh I’d be pissed too. Adrian was all over that.
F’ing crap.
August 23, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Great play by Adrian, terrible call by 1B umpire. Damn.
August 23, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Beltran up with two on instead of us being out of the inning because of a blown call. That’s just crap.
August 23, 2007 at 5:06 pm
Mets announcers on XM saying it was a bad call
August 23, 2007 at 5:06 pm
This is a joke. How can an umpire blow a call like that with everything right in front of him?
August 23, 2007 at 5:08 pm
Ball one was close and after they screwed us to extend the inning, that would have been nice to have.
August 23, 2007 at 5:09 pm
Great inning by Germano. Gets four outs, strikes out Beltran with two runners on, only real hit is an infield single, four grounders and the K in the inning. Very nice.
August 23, 2007 at 5:09 pm
Beltran not happy with strike three call. Oh well…
August 23, 2007 at 5:09 pm
Bad call by the ump, but if Kouz made a better throw the call wouldn’t be an issue. Nice K though.
August 23, 2007 at 5:10 pm
Umpire was blocked by the bag. He should have at least asked one of the other umps if they had a better view. He’ll hear about it from somebody that he blew the call.
August 23, 2007 at 5:10 pm
Nicely done by Germano. The umpire put him in a real bad spot.
August 23, 2007 at 5:11 pm
58: He made a good enough throw to get the out. That was entirely on the umpire.
August 23, 2007 at 5:14 pm
A hit by NOG!
August 23, 2007 at 5:14 pm
Nice work tonite with the bats by the Pads.
Can Bard make it to third on a sacrifice?
August 23, 2007 at 5:15 pm
#63: Yes.
August 23, 2007 at 5:18 pm
Alright, MB with bases loaded. Let’s go Milty!!
August 23, 2007 at 5:20 pm
Jenga!
August 23, 2007 at 5:20 pm
Way to go Milty!!!
August 23, 2007 at 5:26 pm
Can someone venture an opinion on why our lineup looks so much better with Jenga in the lineup?
August 23, 2007 at 5:28 pm
#68: Ummm…’cause he can hit with runners on and not double up?
August 23, 2007 at 5:30 pm
#68: The ‘L’ in Milton and in Bradley isn’t silent?
August 23, 2007 at 5:30 pm
68: Because he’s been hitting like Babe Ruth since his arrival here?
August 23, 2007 at 5:31 pm
#69: Easy way out. It just seems like everyone hits better and pitchers take a different approach with him in the lineup than when he’s not and I’m not sure why.
Matt and Mud keep talking about how “It’s a much different lineup with Milton Bradley.” If that’s the case, why?
August 23, 2007 at 5:32 pm
#68: He has a *Monopoly* on *Jenga*?
August 23, 2007 at 5:35 pm
72: He threatens to bean them with a water bottle if they don’t take their at-bats seriously?
August 23, 2007 at 5:36 pm
Shakespeare! Looks like a line drive in the box score.
August 23, 2007 at 5:36 pm
Unless GameDay is wrong, how does Bard take that pitch to RF? Totally sawed off and lucky?
August 23, 2007 at 5:37 pm
Milton Bradley is by far the best hitter on this team. There’s a huge drop off from him to Giles and then there’s a pretty good sized drop from Giles to Gonzalez and Cameron.
August 23, 2007 at 5:37 pm
I love “In play, runs” with a man on first.
August 23, 2007 at 5:37 pm
#72: It’s a sub-conscience thing for the rest of the line-up. He raises the bar to his level. It’s like playing golf with Phil Mickelson. You’d take twice as long to line up a put.
Nice NOG!!!!
August 23, 2007 at 5:37 pm
Botched squeeze…
August 23, 2007 at 5:37 pm
NOG reclaiming his job.
August 23, 2007 at 5:38 pm
#76: Pop up to second, infield was playing in and the ball dropped untouched.
August 23, 2007 at 5:39 pm
Thanks for the insights, and the one-liners. And to think there’s no cover charge!
August 23, 2007 at 5:39 pm
I’m not sure that was really interference.
August 23, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Missed bunt? Germano can swing it a little, no need to get too tricky here.
GameDay has the two pitches to Germano halfway into the other batter’s box.
August 23, 2007 at 5:41 pm
#85: Squeeze attempt on a pitchout. Germano missed and momentum carried him into Alomar.
August 23, 2007 at 5:42 pm
So I’m guessing there never was a second pitch.
August 23, 2007 at 5:49 pm
#87: Just checked the replay. Correct, only one pitch.
August 23, 2007 at 5:50 pm
Wright with a Little League error. Thanks.
August 23, 2007 at 5:58 pm
Khalil’s approach has been great tonight. He’s laid off some tough pitches and gone the other way when the situation dictated it. More, please!
August 23, 2007 at 6:08 pm
Why is Geoff Blum coming in on a double switch to play third base? Don’t we have someone that can actually hit on the bench, like, say Morgan Ensberg? And it’s even a lefty on the mound currently, and it seems likely he’ll throw another inning.
August 23, 2007 at 6:11 pm
That hurts with only one out.
August 23, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Sigh. Poor defense, poor bullpen work…
August 23, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Kouz has really stunk it up at third of more than late. Maybe the scouting reports were right.
August 23, 2007 at 6:13 pm
Uh-oh, it’s Marlon Anderson time.
August 23, 2007 at 6:14 pm
Good Lord.
August 23, 2007 at 6:14 pm
Pretty sure Anderson is my least favorite player ever.
August 23, 2007 at 6:15 pm
How much meat has Cla served this year ?
August 23, 2007 at 6:15 pm
Meriadith just gave this game away in one inning.
August 23, 2007 at 6:15 pm
I seriously was typing up a joke about how we should intentionally walk Marlon Anderson, because if we didn’t he would homer here.
I blame the walk to Alou for all of this. The bases were loaded, and Alou is right handed, which are the guys Meredith is supposed to destroy, and he walks him to force in a run.
August 23, 2007 at 6:18 pm
The walk was the worst. Even the one strike wasn’t in the zone. You don’t want to go inside to Alou, but that was ridiculous.
August 23, 2007 at 6:24 pm
Unless Headley gets hurt, Kouz will not be our third baseman next year. LF, maybe in a platoon, and spot-starts at first base.
August 23, 2007 at 6:25 pm
NOG steps up and has a decent game, and it’s OG that’s killing us by not being able to get runners in.
August 23, 2007 at 6:27 pm
There has never been a moment this year when I wasn’t absolutely sure the Padres would win the Division…
But tonight, for the first time, I’m getting the feeling that maybe it’s just not gonna happen this year.
August 23, 2007 at 6:28 pm
DP just rips your heart out after the Mets give you a gift. We’re last in the NL in GIDP, second only to the Indians in MLB. Why does it seem like we pull two a night?
August 23, 2007 at 6:29 pm
Do we really need to see the Buckner ground ball again? Come on, channel 4.
August 23, 2007 at 6:31 pm
back up the truck turn this place into a parking lot
August 23, 2007 at 6:38 pm
104: You may have a point as David Wright snares a sure double from Cameron.
August 23, 2007 at 6:38 pm
I don’t think George Brett could have caught that!
August 23, 2007 at 6:39 pm
Since I can’t decide between “Crushin’ Russian” (which sounds better) and “Mashin’ Macedonian” (which is accurate) I’ve come up with my own nickname for Kouzmanoff… “Klank”
August 23, 2007 at 6:42 pm
The luck is eluding us I see. I go to my future in-laws for dinner and you guys can’t protect a 5-run lead?
Seriously, demoralizing as hell.
