It’s great to see ex-Padre Brian Lawrence back in the big leagues. B-Law did some nice work here back toward the end of the pre-Petco dark ages. I wish him well, but on Wednesday night, I hope our guys beat the snot out of him.
Go Padres!

First! I think that is a Football Outsider phenomenon. OT, they rank Norv Turner & co 29th of 30 teams in coaching quality.
We actually had a nice night at the plate yesterday. Some bad luck and bad baserunning/unfortunate outcome to a hit and run, otherwise we win, even with Heath and Trevor being mortal. I hope they are professionals, get back to work and gets some good at bats.
Good pitch recognition + patience/willingness to hit with 2 strikes –> solid at-bats –> walks, good swings —> good chance for runs.
The baseball gods have decided a lot of our line drives find gloves; I hope they take last night’s loss and our collective pain and disappointment as some sort of sacrifice, so we get some breaks.
August 22, 2007 at 4:30 pm
In Jenga we trust. Let’s hope the hitters are feeling good and will add to their performances last night. GO Padres!
August 22, 2007 at 4:33 pm
After 1 IP, Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 25-12; B Lawrence 13-9.
Come on, Padres. Get to BLaw.
August 22, 2007 at 4:34 pm
Get on base, Khalil. Good walk by Cameron.
August 22, 2007 at 4:35 pm
Alright, Khalil. Let’s go Padres!
August 22, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Man, can’t we just program Khalil to see other stadiums when he bats at home? Terrible AB by Kouz.
August 22, 2007 at 4:39 pm
Gotta love Khalil’s polite take-out slide.
Bard was safe, by the way.
August 22, 2007 at 4:48 pm
After 2 IP, Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 34-20; B Lawrence 30-18.
August 22, 2007 at 4:51 pm
Could use a couple more quick, low pitch innings from Jake especially with the offense devoid of XBH as usual.
August 22, 2007 at 4:52 pm
Argh. Silent L sucked again.
August 22, 2007 at 4:53 pm
Blum sure seems to like to hit into DPs. That’s his 9th of the year allready vs only 54 hits.
August 22, 2007 at 4:55 pm
Dang it. Reyes at first after striking out.
August 22, 2007 at 4:55 pm
Reyes is going to punish Bard for not blocking that pitch
August 22, 2007 at 4:56 pm
Come on, Jake. Get Castillo out.
August 22, 2007 at 4:57 pm
Ugh, stupid Jose Reyes.
August 22, 2007 at 4:57 pm
Crap. I hope no double steal here.
August 22, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Come on, Jake. Back him off the plate.
August 22, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Damn. NO place to put Beltran. Let’s go, Jake.
August 22, 2007 at 5:02 pm
Rung him up looking!
August 22, 2007 at 5:03 pm
Damn! Nice Peavy
August 22, 2007 at 5:03 pm
Get him Jake!
August 22, 2007 at 5:05 pm
True definition of a stopper right there.
August 22, 2007 at 5:06 pm
Good job, Jake. Now, hitters, get some runs.
August 22, 2007 at 5:06 pm
glad to see the Mets fans are as stupid as Giants fans when it comes to fly balls….anything hit in the air seems to be a home run I guess
August 22, 2007 at 5:06 pm
Exactly, that’s a pitcher stepping up. If that doesn’t inspire the team to go out and get some more runs for him, I don’t know what will
August 22, 2007 at 5:07 pm
Whew! I need my nitro pills…
August 22, 2007 at 5:08 pm
Whew! That was a lot of pitches.
After 3 IP, Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 58-35; B Lawrence 42-23.
And, Texas-Baltimore is officially a football score, 24-3 in the 8th inning.
August 22, 2007 at 5:12 pm
Alright. Let’s go, Khalil.
August 22, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Koooooozzz!!!! Nice RBI!
August 22, 2007 at 5:14 pm
KOUZ!
August 22, 2007 at 5:15 pm
Alright, I’m out. Go Padres! Keep the scoring going.
August 22, 2007 at 5:15 pm
Bad thing, they are walking Bard. Good thing, Peavy is one of the few hitting pitchers in the league.
August 22, 2007 at 5:15 pm
Bullshit! High and inside.
August 22, 2007 at 5:22 pm
Damn, I wish Peavy’s pitchcount wasn’t so high. If certain things continue to happen, think they’ll let him go 130 pitches?
August 22, 2007 at 5:23 pm
Is it just me, or does the funny umpiring ALWAYS seem to happen when the Padres play in New York?
Of course I do have some question about home plate umpires when they are umping with their home town team playing….seems like that might be something for MLB to cut out.
August 22, 2007 at 5:24 pm
30-3 Texas over Baltimore in the 9th. Do the Orioles think batting practice is still going on and the game hasn’t started yet?
August 22, 2007 at 5:25 pm
I never pay attention to Jake’s pitch count. He’s got too much stamina.
August 22, 2007 at 5:29 pm
Kinda miss B-Law’s craftiness. You have to admit, he would be nice to have in the back of the rotation these days.
Did anyone see Miltn’s Rickey Henderson ’slap your glove against thigh’ move last inning? Loved it. Too early to get a Milton camo jersey? Love the guy!
August 22, 2007 at 5:31 pm
Alright Cammy, MB, and Adrian.
August 22, 2007 at 5:32 pm
36 - that’s the most runs scored by a single team in baseball history, I think - we were just googling it here at work.
attaboys - keep scoring the runs now
August 22, 2007 at 5:34 pm
Uhhh… did the Mets announcers just advocate the pitcher hit Bradley next time up?
August 22, 2007 at 5:35 pm
41: DUnno, I’m watchin on ESPN2.
And shouldn’t Peaves hit Reyes for his stupid third base antics?
August 22, 2007 at 5:35 pm
This ump has a low strike zone.
August 22, 2007 at 5:36 pm
Milton certainly makes things a little more interesting…..much better when he is on your team instead of the other way around though.
August 22, 2007 at 5:41 pm
42: They said something like, “If I were Brian Lawrence, I’d put Milton Bradley’s antics in the memory bank and remember that the next time he came up to the plate.”
August 22, 2007 at 5:43 pm
#42: Jake has more class than that.
August 22, 2007 at 5:51 pm
re 46: Call a real cop!
August 22, 2007 at 5:55 pm
Anyone else see the bullpen paying attention?
August 22, 2007 at 5:55 pm
#47: Huh?
August 22, 2007 at 5:58 pm
#49:

August 22, 2007 at 6:01 pm
Peavy strikes out Mike DiFelice to tie Andy Benes for #1 all time in Padres history. Nice!
August 22, 2007 at 6:02 pm
#47/50: Gotcha. Forgot about that one.
August 22, 2007 at 6:04 pm
At least B(l)um couldn’t hit into a DP on that one.
August 22, 2007 at 6:09 pm
Hensley warming in the ‘pen. Second straight day…
August 22, 2007 at 6:09 pm
I was just looking at the GameCast recap - Jake had a shot at the rare achievement of striking out four batters in the bottom of the third inning. Delgado spoiled it by popping up. Striking out four in one inning has happened before, but infrequently.
August 22, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Attaboy, Khalil. It’s just that easy.
August 22, 2007 at 6:12 pm
KG comes through again. Nice.
August 22, 2007 at 6:12 pm
52: Anyone else think Buddy should think about moving Bum out of the top of the lineup? It would appear he has turned back into a pumpkin. His season wOBA is back under .300 (league average is .334).
August 22, 2007 at 6:13 pm
#56: If he had been swinging for the fence, it would have been the 3rd out. I liked the placement of that.
August 22, 2007 at 6:14 pm
I’ll say it again, can we program Khalil to see other parks when he’s hitting at home?
August 22, 2007 at 6:15 pm
Kooooooz!
August 22, 2007 at 6:16 pm
Khalil and Kouz, having a great game at the plate tonite.
August 22, 2007 at 6:16 pm
this is good. after yesterday’s loss (caused by Trevor’s having a bad inning, which is fairly rare) which was made more likely by a lack of timely hitting, to see the boys swinging the bats well for a second night in a row is quite reassuring. we’re gonna need the offense in Philly’s bandbox of a ballpark.
most excellent, Bill my friend.
August 22, 2007 at 6:18 pm
I can’t believe how Mets fans will boo their own pitcher when he gives up a few runs. I haven’t been to many Padres home games recently, but I don’t think our fans do that, do they?
August 22, 2007 at 6:22 pm
64: No, I think the only person this year to have been booed was Linebrink when he gave up the 3-run job to Wright to blow Maddux’s win.
August 22, 2007 at 6:24 pm
#64: Steve, my Sister and Brother in-law live in New Jersey and are big Mets/Jets fans. I’m hoping to call them up tomorrow night with a hefty ‘neener, neener, neener!’
August 22, 2007 at 6:28 pm
Wright’s a stud, but that’s a little too much respect.
August 22, 2007 at 6:28 pm
There’s two outs. Walk Beltran and go after the next batter.
August 22, 2007 at 6:29 pm
67: I know, lets keep putting men on for the hottest guy on their team.
Good call!
Thank God Brocail manned up.
August 22, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Ah, so I guess he wanted Beltran. Sure, that’s it.
August 22, 2007 at 6:30 pm
#67: I gotta agree.
#68: What the hell do I know?
August 22, 2007 at 6:33 pm
OT: GY, did you get all your Cooperstown pics posted yet (haven’t had a chance to look)?
August 22, 2007 at 6:42 pm
K-Cam is making me nervous already.
August 22, 2007 at 6:42 pm
This umpire totally sucks at the plate.
August 22, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Webb finally gave up a run in the first to the Brewers.
August 22, 2007 at 6:48 pm
75: I’d like to see himn give up six more.
August 22, 2007 at 6:52 pm
KG has had a brilliant series. Well done sir.
August 22, 2007 at 6:53 pm
Do we see Trevor here after last nights debacle?
August 22, 2007 at 6:54 pm
78: No way. It’s K-Cam or Hammy.
August 22, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Finally Cameron returns to his early season role: it’s the return of the Human Victory Cigar. It’s been a while.
August 22, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Somehow, I saw that coming.
August 22, 2007 at 7:01 pm
Let’s hope Hoffman can pull this off.
August 22, 2007 at 7:03 pm
I spoke too soon. I’m going away now. BTW, I really detest Marlon Anderson.
August 22, 2007 at 7:05 pm
Silent L drops a can of corn!!!!!!! ACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 22, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Could we screw up any more in one inning?
August 22, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Well, in Blum’s defense… that ball *was* hit pretty high. ::rolls eyes::
August 22, 2007 at 7:07 pm
Now I know why I have an ulcer.
August 22, 2007 at 7:09 pm
phew. that almost got talk-me-off-the-ledge bad there.
August 22, 2007 at 7:09 pm
This should have been a 7-2 win. I know a win is a win. But, give us a break. Our late innings playing has really sucked recently. Grrrr.
August 22, 2007 at 7:10 pm
Never in doubt. Yawn. Is that all you got? Tying run didn’t even reach base, let alone scoring position?
August 22, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Someone needs to hold a team meeting and call out this suck-ass play late in the game. Our bullpen has suddenly decided that they can’t go through a game without giving up 2 runs or more. Seriously, terrible terrible win.
August 22, 2007 at 7:13 pm
And I also don’t care if Marcus strikes out every at-bat for the rest of the season. Geoff Blum is not allowed to play on the field anymore.
August 22, 2007 at 7:49 pm
Okay, nobody’s mentioned the Rangers game yet. Holy S$#&T!!!! Seriously, 30 runs?!? And, the wierd thing is that the ESPN box score suggest that the Ranger’s pitcher that pitched the final 3 innings got a save????!?
Texas Rangers
Pitchers IP H R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
K Gabbard (W, 6-1) 6.0 7 3 3 1 3 0 89-56 3.64
W Littleton (S, 1) 3.0 2 0 0 1 1 0 43-29 3.86
Totals 9.0 9 3 3 2 4 0 132-85
August 22, 2007 at 7:50 pm
shoot, didn’t see post 36…. sorry!
August 22, 2007 at 8:11 pm
That was a lot of walks for Peavy tonight. He pitched pretty well versus a really strony Mets squad. 5 IP of no hit ball is pretty impressive. CY YOUNG!
–Beegcellent Baseball
August 22, 2007 at 8:31 pm
How many Pythagorean wins did the Rangers pick up tonight?
