IGD: Padres vs Mets (18 Jul 07)
Wed, Jul 18, 2007by Geoff Young
| time: | 7:05 p.m. PT |
| tv: | 4SD |
| sp: | Greg Maddux (7-7, 4.35) vs John Maine (10-5, 2.91) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com |
If you want to feel bad for a team, how about the Baltimore Orioles. They traded John Maine and Jorge Julio to the Mets for Kris Benson. New York turned Julio into Orlando Hernandez, so essentially, the Mets parlayed Anna Benson’s overpaid, broken down husband into two good starting pitchers.
Nice trick, that…
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.
July 18, 2007 at 6:32 pm
It’d be nice to take 2 of 3 from NY. At least we didn’t get clocked as bad as the Dogs last night. Whoa!
Go Padres!
July 18, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Dogs already have a W today …
July 18, 2007 at 6:53 pm
Looks to be the Padres and Dogs neck and neck for the second half of the season.
OT: Mike Vick is an idiot. Who throws away an NFL career doing what he allegedly did (and he looks pretty guilty)?
July 18, 2007 at 6:59 pm
3: Thats Hotlanta for you. I never liked Vick, and it sucks for the Falcons cause they traded thier best QB, Matt Schaub (who is a better QB than Vick, probably not a better athlete), away.
July 18, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Wow, Maddux esta en fuego.
July 18, 2007 at 7:12 pm
#4: If you read Nick Canepa’s article today, he pointed out that we gave up Vick in the draft basically to go after Tim Dwight and another #5 pick (L.T.). Who’d of thunk back then that we would come up smelling like roses on that decision.
Maddux looks like he is in prime form tonight.
July 18, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Come on, Bradley, more true outcomes! Preferably one involving the ball over the fence.
July 18, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Excellent. I LOVE having our two most selective hitters at the top of the line-up. Gets the pitch count up … lets others see what the pitcher’s got … increases the chances of getting a guy on base for the more power guys… Excellent.
July 18, 2007 at 7:17 pm
I’m listening to the Missions’ game and Colt Morton just homered to put the Missions up 4-1.
July 18, 2007 at 7:18 pm
Nice RBI for Adrian. He just smoked that down the line to the right corner. I don’t think I’ve seen OG run that fast before.
July 18, 2007 at 7:18 pm
It’s certainly nice having someone on base when Adrian hits those doubles.
July 18, 2007 at 7:22 pm
It seems like Khalil has a knack for taking first pitch fastballs down the middle and swinging at first pitch breaking balls that he can’t hit well.
July 18, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Blooper to shallow left for Khalil send Adrian home. Sweet.
BTW…My sometimes play by play is for LM’s benefit.
July 18, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Thanks Rick, it helps me too. I surmised it was a bloop by the “soft fly ball” part of Gameday’s description.
July 18, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Wright had leather on that at third and let is slip to shallow left.
July 18, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Anytime Ben
July 18, 2007 at 7:25 pm
I like the line-up tonight. Even with Blum in, he cant do any worse than Marcus. Good to see Bard get a start, he earned it with the pinch hit i suppose.
We are hitting against a GOOD pitcher (2.25 road ERA)… this is amazing
July 18, 2007 at 7:26 pm
8: Look what happens when we have Giles, Bradley, Gonzo to start the game… we score runs in the first.
July 18, 2007 at 7:29 pm
We are hitting a lot of foul balls off of Maine up and over the ‘backstop’ to run his pitch count up. He’s probably throwing a two seam, split finger fast ball with a slight back spin. Good for us, bad for him.
July 18, 2007 at 7:30 pm
36 pitches thrown by Maine in that first inning. Great work by pretty much everyone in making him work.
July 18, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Greg looks smokin’ hot tonight.
July 18, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Maddux is no longer on pace to strike out 27 batters in a complete game requiring only 99 pitches. Too bad.
July 18, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Maddux is looking like Maddux. Take no prisoners and get it done quick. If we keep the bats going, I think we’ll be OK.
July 18, 2007 at 7:37 pm
After striking out the side in the first, Maddux has everything hit on the ground in the second (to four different infielders, having the intelligence to avoid inducing a ball to Blum). He’ll probably look to keep the outfielders on their toes in the third with three easy fly outs, one to each field.
July 18, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Tough to keep the bats going this inning with Blum and the pitcher hitting first.
July 18, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Silent L up to the plate. Without runners aboard, he still manages an out. Sheesh.
July 18, 2007 at 7:39 pm
At least he didn’t make an out on the first pitch or make two outs or anything like that.
July 18, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Thats when B Giles is annoying, its like he wants to walk and wont even swing the bat
July 18, 2007 at 7:43 pm
#27: At least he’s in the bottom of the line-up. God, I wish we would trade him.
July 18, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Josh Geer threw a complete game three hitter for the Missions tonight, with 8 k’s and 0 bb’s.
July 18, 2007 at 7:44 pm
27,29: At least he is 8th. Him and Marcus are no different at the plate right now so at least Blum moves the gaping hole to 8th and makes the line up the way it should be.
July 18, 2007 at 7:45 pm
#30: Wow. What was the final score?
July 18, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes - J Maine 48-33; G Maddux 25-20.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Maine 2-2; G Maddux 3-0.
Batters faced - J Maine 10; G Maddux 7.
July 18, 2007 at 7:49 pm
I have a certain affinity for these middle-aged players (ie. Wells, Maddux, etal.). Being middle-age myself, they make me feel like we aren’t over the hill yet.
Maddux just waxed ‘em again.
July 18, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Monoply hit that one to the beach!
July 18, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Jenga!!!
July 18, 2007 at 7:51 pm
32 … 4-1 Missions …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....p;did=milb
July 18, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Wow he CRUSHED that thing
July 18, 2007 at 7:59 pm
The sad thing is that Maddux will go into the Hall of Fame as a Brave. Too bad.
July 18, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Bip loves General Bradley.
July 18, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Was Valentin’s SB a busted H&R, or was it straight?
July 18, 2007 at 8:03 pm
That last pitch was sooo sweet, I now have to see my dentist!
July 18, 2007 at 8:05 pm
#41: Sorry Bip, I didn’t see it, head call.
July 18, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Thru top of 4th …
Pitches-strikes - J Maine 60-42; G Maddux 55-41.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Maine 3-2; G Maddux 6-0.
Batters faced - J Maine 14; G Maddux 14.
July 18, 2007 at 8:06 pm
41: Looked straight to me
July 18, 2007 at 8:07 pm
I can’t believe Silent L actually got a double! Maybe I should buy a Lotto ticket.
July 18, 2007 at 8:09 pm
I should not join the IGDs until an hour into the game every nite, nice work boys. How close to being caught was Khalil’s blooper?
July 18, 2007 at 8:10 pm
What’s worse:
the fact that we all seem slightly disappointed when Blum actually does something positive
the fact that we’re so negative on Blum to start with
?
July 18, 2007 at 8:12 pm
#48: When he does something positive, it keeps him on the team.
July 18, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Nice. Maddux owns the Mets tonight.
July 18, 2007 at 8:17 pm
After top of 5th …
Pitches-strikes - J Maine 68-47; G Maddux 65-49.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Maine 4-4; G Maddux 7-2.
Batters faced - J Maine 18; G Maddux 19.
July 18, 2007 at 8:18 pm
All right, Black, you paying attention? That fifth inning was a lot less sharp than his previous four innings. This probably indicates that he is starting to tire. This means you should have a reliever getting ready to come in at the first sign of trouble in the next couple of innings.
July 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm
52: And as if on cue, Meredith is warming in the pen.
July 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Sweet. Thank you Adrian. First pitch knock.
July 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Adrian is now officially BACK!
July 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm
I hope this means Adrian is pulling out of it.
July 18, 2007 at 8:22 pm
He’s got four extra base hits in the past two nights. I think he’s out of it.
July 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm
OK, everybody knows I’m not a Cla Merideth fan and so I’ll try to keep my comments to myself.
July 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Maddux is done. I hope he’s alright.
July 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm
57: Although his double tonight should have been an out, I still agree that he’s pulled out of his slump.
July 18, 2007 at 8:25 pm
On one hand, good to see Black pull Maddux before something goes wrong. On the other hand, this is so ridiculously out of character for Black that something must be wrong with Maddux. Any word?
July 18, 2007 at 8:26 pm
58: How’re you feeling about him right now? Seven pitches.
July 18, 2007 at 8:26 pm
Great inning by Meredith.
July 18, 2007 at 8:26 pm
61: My sentiments exactly. We haven’t heard yet.
Rick, why the Claw hate? I think Cla is a wonderful pitcher (there ya go right there) and I thinkk he still has a lot to offer as a Padre.
July 18, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Damn, that looked like an xBH off the bat. Though he’s still K’ing more than I’d like to see, Khalil looks more comfortable at the dish lately.
July 18, 2007 at 8:31 pm
#62,63,64: A rare outing. I just hate watching side-arms. They may as well be pitching fast soft-ball. The control is usually terrible and the types of pitches they can throw is limited. The only reason they have any success whatsoever is because the batter isn’t used to see it come from that angle.
July 18, 2007 at 8:32 pm
66: I would say that Cla has pretty good control. If he keeps his pitches down, he’s usually extremely effective. Also, as a reliever, you really only need two pitches. Cla throws a sinker and a slider. It’s not like Trevor has struggled with his fastball/changeup combo.
July 18, 2007 at 8:32 pm
A DP coming up here.
July 18, 2007 at 8:33 pm
#68: If there were less than 2 outs already.
July 18, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Wow, Blum, I am proud of you. Excellent at bat.
July 18, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Let’s hope Ring doesn’t relive last night.
July 18, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Ring here? Does anyone else like this, cuz I don’t.
July 18, 2007 at 8:42 pm
I really like the use of Ring there. Delgado and Green are horrible against lefties. The execution by Ring, not so much.
July 18, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Mike pushed that one out. I thought he had it. Wow.
July 18, 2007 at 8:42 pm
I hope like hell someone else is warming.
July 18, 2007 at 8:43 pm
#75: Bell warming up.
July 18, 2007 at 8:45 pm
For his career, Delgado has a .992 OPS against righties and a .805 OPS against lefties. Green career is .884 against righties and .758 against lefties.
July 18, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Come on, guys. Scott Schoeneweis of the 21-23 K/BB ratio entering today? That was a fairly pathetic inning.
July 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Will we see Trevor tonight?
July 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm
After doing some further investigating, I have found that Schoeneweis is actually decent against lefties. I withdraw my condemnation of OG and Adrian. My frustration with Bradley remains. Glad we cleared that up.
July 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Thank you Ben.
July 18, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Throw strikes, Linebrink. Actually, scratch that. Don’t just throw strikes, throw good strikes where you hit your target, instead of aiming for the center of the plate and trusting that your wildness will put the ball on a corner somewhere.
July 18, 2007 at 9:05 pm
I hate Linebrink
July 18, 2007 at 9:06 pm
Why the hell is Linebrink automatically our 8th inning guy? Jesus Christ.
July 18, 2007 at 9:07 pm
I make a phone call and WTF just happened? It’s tied up 4-4? WTF?
July 18, 2007 at 9:07 pm
I can’t wait to read the words “eighth inning specialist” before Linebrink’s name in the paper tomorrow…
July 18, 2007 at 9:07 pm
85: Scott “Walk, Walk, Gopherball” Linebrink happened.
July 18, 2007 at 9:08 pm
86: Why is 8th inning specialist even a specialist?
July 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm
88: That’s a great question, but every time he’s been mentioned in recaps recently in the UT, he’s been described as a “specialist,” as if it’s some sort of label like “closer,” which of course Scott isn’t and can’t be. But gosh darnit, he’s so great, he’s an eighth inning specialist!
July 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm
My case in point against side-arms right there.
July 18, 2007 at 9:12 pm
BTW, I can’t wait until we collect our draft picks for him this winter.
July 18, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Credit Khalil for not chasing any of those sliders.
July 18, 2007 at 9:13 pm
Smith is showing what a side-arm really looks like.
July 18, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Bad pitch to K Bard, bad pitch indeed.
July 18, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Is it too much to ask for Silent L to come through again?
July 18, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Oh God, we are gonna rely on Silent L now?
July 18, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Man. Joe Smith has come a long ways since his days at Maryland.
July 18, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Worst words a Padre fan can herar: “And it will all come down to Geoff Blum”
July 18, 2007 at 9:17 pm
At least it’s not Blum batting right-handed.
July 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm
98: hahahaha ya well he came through
July 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm
HE DOES IT! I don’t believe it!
July 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Geoff…. my man!!!!!!!!!
July 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm
98: Surely you jest. Is my feed that slow?
July 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm
thats was no cheap hit ether, thank you Blum!!! Marcus would had struck out there
July 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm
Do you believe in miracles?!
July 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm
The bad thing is, he redeems himself and stays on the roster.
July 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm
Thtat’s called reputation rehabilitation. Attaboy, Blummer.
July 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm
106: He will stay until we have someone who can actually replace him haha
July 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm
98: Great. Now he’s guaranteed pinch hits for the rest of the month.
In all fairness, it was a nice AB by Blum. Khalil got it started with a walk, Kouz gets a single, and Blum brings it home.
July 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm
He was swinging away at 3-1. That shows a lot of confidence. At least he still believes in himself.
July 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm
110: Someone’s got to, right?
July 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm
I know he’s hard to watch a lot of the time, but Blum really is not a terrible utility guy. He seems to save his bullets for when it counts. He’s already had like 3 game winnings hits this year?
July 18, 2007 at 9:22 pm
To be honest, these situations seem like the only time Blum gets hits…
