IGD: Padres vs Dodgers (29 Apr 07)

first pitch: 1:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: David Wells (1-1, 6.00 ERA) vs Derek Lowe (2-3, 4.40 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com

So, did that fly ball that Russell Martin hit off Trevor Hoffman last night scare the bejeezus out of you or what? Anyway, it’s nice to get back in the win column. The Padres look to take the series on Sunday.

If the early pattern holds, and there’s no reason to believe that it will, then David Wells is due for a good outing:

    … well done!

  2. 151: TMI

  3. C’mon, Kouz. Let Saito hang one.

  4. I’m betting Bud Black is going to regret taking AGon out at some point

  5. 152 … oops … now that I look at it, I agree … won’t happen again …

  6. 155: It’s ok. But, after 15 innings, things are getting blury.

  7. Waaaaaa… I had so much fucking work to do tonight!

  8. 154: It’s a nearly impossible situation. You’ve got to lose one of your key position players, have Hampson for a shorter time, or let Hampson go long and let him hit when it’s his turn. Obviously Linebrink and Hoffman are sore or they’d have pitched by now.

  9. just spent the entire break watching the pac-man animation on mlb.tv… have to say, I’m not impressed by Pac’s strategy…

  10. Nice of the boys to pay tribute to that relic of the past: the Sunday double-header.

  11. not sure we can expect much more from a catcher trying to make a tough throw….

  12. 6 of last 8 innings the Dogs have their lead-off man on-base … that’s gotta be tiring …

  13. 159: I’ve actually spent quite a long time analyzing that Pac-man thing. There has to be a reason for it being so bad. I’m considering writing a Masters Thesis on it.

  14. 163: have you figured out what’s “chasing it”? I’m pretty sure those aren’t ghosts.

  15. Nice DP

  16. 163: It’s near-zero bandwidth so the hamsters powering the MLB servers can catch their breath.

  17. COME ON PADRES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. are they gloves?

  19. Geoff must be at the game. Haven’t heard from him today.

  20. 158 … well said …

124 … I guess we do need rally caps … I call “RALLY CAPS” time!

  21. 166: That’s a good point about why it’s not graphically intense. But doesn’t explain why the goddamn pacman dude turns 180 degrees in the other direction when he has just two more dots to eat and no ghost thingies anywhere close.

  22. Could they get an inning from Young or Hensley? It should be the BP day for one of them, although they’ve probably already done it.

  23. Goddamn it!!! Put Peavy in!!!!!!

  24. Jake has batting gloves on.

  25. I thought Kent nailed that.

  26. 175: Me too. And then we give away the out on a 10 footer.

  27. OK, not what I wanted to see.

  28. Ugh. Maybe next time Black won’t take Gonzalez out on a double switch

  29. Hey, Blum is up this inning…

  30. 178 … I understand what you’re saying … and I sorta agree with you … but what would have you have done instead? (see 158)

  31. No matter what, Hampson’s the player of the game. He throws 55 pitches before grooving that one to Clark. We’re lucky to even be in the game this long, I only count 1 hit in extra innings. Cruz had a loud out.

  32. Re:180. If you know Hampson is it for the rest of the game, leave Adrian in and just let Hampson hit in his spot. If there’s a runner on second with two outs when Hampson comes up, well tough. Any other situation, it really doesn’t matter.

  33. 178: That’s a catch almost anyone makes. It didn’t take a great defensive first baseman.

  34. 158, 178: Obviously in hindsight taking out Adrian doesn’t look good at all. But I would have to say that if you were going to have Hampson go this long, why not keep him in the pitcher’s spot? That way you don’t take out your best hitter, and practically one of a few guys that could end the game on one swing. Asking this crew to string together some hits is really asking for too much it looks like.

  35. Martinez must be getting tired.

  36. I would try to keep my best defense on the field. I would never take out my best offensive and defensive (at his position) player just to avoid letting a pitcher hit. I criticized Bochy last year for his infatuation with the double switch, Black is doing the same thing. Just let the pitcher hit, it’s not like you have Barry Bonds coming off the bench. Or let Maddux or Peavy hit.

Blummer was saving the magic for the right moment

  37. 182: People would be saying much different things if we had the bases loaded, 2 outs, and Hampson had to hit.

There was no good answer there. The only other thing to do is remove Giles instead of Gonzalez.

  38. A Padre baserunner off the Dodgers bullpen… That’s only the third one in 10 innings….

  39. It’s Blum time.

  40. The real culprit here is carrying 12 pitchers and three catchers.

  41. 184: Black couldn’t see that we wouldn’t be able to do ANYTHING with the LA pitching. I’m sure his plan was, go with Hampson as long as I can or have to.

  42. Re 187. In that situation, you can make a choice – let Hampson hit with the bases loaded or pinch hit for him and hope you don’t have to go back out for the next inning.

If Adrian’s spot came up with the bases loaded and two outs, you’re in no better position.

  43. At least there is no chance of a DP

  44. Let’s go Rob

  45. 193 – Shhh….

  46. Now … it’s MAN-BO time!

  47. 192: But Adrian’s spot was 4 hitters beyond the pitcher. And I don’t think we had anybody left to pinch-hit. You want to avoid the possibility of Hampson hitting as long as possible.

  48. Are there still fans in the stands? Are they making some noise?

  49. 197 If you don’t put Laforest in for Adrian, he’s available to pinch hit.

  50. 190: And NOG getting hurt, and Branyan having to go on bereavement.
