Tigers go for the sweep at home against the A’s. Former Oakland farmhand Jeremy Bonderman (drafted under Grady Fuson’s watch and a focal point of Moneyball) faces Dan Haren, part of the package that sent Mark Mulder to St. Louis. Haren also was born in Monterey Park, where I lived in the mid- to late-’70s. Feel free to chat about the game or anything else; I’ll have another IGD up at 4 p.m. PT for the NLCS.

Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

On the Bochy to the Cubs rumors - do the Padres get some sort of compensation if Bochy does go to the Cubs?

Good discussions, guys (esp BigKTFan & Kevin)!

re: change in manager & GM … I’m a big SA fan … have been since his early work with the A’s (late 80’s) … I think he’s a good decision maker and judge of management talent … it will be risky to change manager & GM because I think both are above average … but I think SA is the right guy to have being the lead for choosing their replacements. It would seem like Paul Depodesta would be the easy pick for GM … and I’d be good with that. And I think that the key to a good manager is one that doesn’t make mistakes …

Has anyone ever won a Champ Series with the other series only having 2 in the books?

Seems like Tigers are going to get to / have to sit around and wait for a week!

BP ran an article about the how the ALCS teams were built … and it included this view of D’Angelo Jimenez …

In 1999, Jimenez was one of the brightest shortstop prospects in the game after batting .327/.392/.492 at Triple-A Columbus as a 21-year-old. He had a harrowing car accident in the offseason and has never been the same, floating to the Padres, White Sox, Reds, and Rangers before getting signed this summer by Oakland. He’s still a solid performer with plus speed and good contact skills, and he’ll probably last a while in a utility role.

    … fyi … ymmv …

    re: 2

I don’t think Towers is rumoring to be leaving or being fired. So I don’t think Alderson will be choosing a new GM.
