The Minnesota Twins and San Diego Padres are tied for the big-league lead with 17 wins in September. The Twins have lost 8 games this month, while the Pads have lost 7.
Only the Toronto Blue Jays (2.66) have a better ERA than the Padres (2.80) in September. Opponents are hitting just .236/.298/.373 against Padres pitching. The club has outscored its opposition, 114-77, this month.
Tonight’s starter, Chris Young, has the second highest ERA (2.92) among Padres starters in September and he almost tossed a no-no last week. If ever there were a time to use the tired cliche “firing on all cylinders,” now would be it.
Go Padres!
It seems Boch’s strategy was to wrap this up ASAP to give key guys a few days off before the DS starts. But it’s not like the other guys down there have gas-can numbers, aside from maybe Seanez.
I’m assuming Young must’ve been gassed. His pitch count didn’t seem to be too high.
I don’t know about everyone but a split in Arizona I think should do it because that would mean the Dodgers would have to go 3-1 to 4-0 to win the division and it is hard to do either of those in a 4 game series.
The Dodgers aren’t playing a four game series. They play Colorado again tomorrow, and then go to San Francisco. A four game series against the Giants would have really helped though.
Also, Pujols deserves a fastball in the gut next season for watching his home run like that tonight. There is absolutely no reason for any player to do that, and the fact that his club had lost seven in a row makes it even more unacceptable. I’ve always hated Pujols and now I hate him even more.
I have a feeling the division will be decided Saturday and I hope it is then. but I have a good feeling about this club
I just realized the Giants have an off-day tomorrow. Maybe this is just me, and I realize that it’s not going to impact us this season, but I think it’s really lame that they get an off-day going into the last week of the season. It’s a matter of fairness. We haven’t had an off-day in two and a half weeks. If we were neck and neck with San Francisco, they’d have a huge advantage letting everybody (especially Bonds) rest while we have to go out and either do without guys like Cla, Giles, and Greene, or send them out there tired. If I were in charge, every team in the league would play the final two weeks of September without an off-day. Maybe that’s a little nit-picky, but I think it could make a difference.
Surprising Bochy wouldn’t go to another reliever. In his defense, that was the only batter Cla would have faced, but still preplexing when you have Embree and numerous other choices (and Cla is such an integral part of the upcoming series) that he’d go to him again.
Now we head into what has traditionally been Death Valley for the Pads needing at least 2 wins.
On a brighter note, right now, the playoff phenom, Wells, is our number 5 starter.
re: 105
The Padres had off days when other teams didn’t. That falls under the heading of whining.
we can beat these dbacks, the pitching matchups look alright. I believe it’s split and we’re in but let the Padres worry about winning, and we can worry about the scoreboard. Get some runs in Arizona and some quality starts..

That’s good for tomorow’s preview, Geoff can spice that up and also that does dispose the myth that the Padres have been bad in death valley, 3-3 this year. hitting and pitching well.
remember also the Padres just rode a very quiet 6 game winning streak when compared to all the other stuff going on in the national picture.
#103 He deserves it not only for standing there watching it but for the fact that the Padres had won 2 straight against his team..but he also deserves to be knocked down for coming out of the dugout and waving his helmet just like whathisface from last night who did the same thing. Someone needs to remind him that they’ve lost 7 in a row and they still lost the series at home to us…sit your ass down and be quiet…
I have no problem with hitting Pujols because it’s partially better to just hit him and let him know who’s boss instead of throwing four intentional outside pitches
Pujols’ act was bush. He hit a meatball off a tired rookie pitcher. When that same rookie was fresh he made Pujols look like a little leaguer. I hope they limp into the playoffs and he gets a fastball in the ear en route to getting swept.
