Since striking out 16 Braves on May 22, Jake Peavy is 1-5 with a 7.01 ERA over nine starts. I don’t have any easy answers for his struggles, and I doubt anyone else does either — otherwise he wouldn’t be struggling.

No TV Wednesday afternoon as the Pads go for the sweep in LA before heading to Denver for four against the Rockies.

  1. Yup, agree with TW & FF, Peavy should’ve been done after 6 nice innings.

  2. I imagine Bochy is trying to rest his pen, but that’s a misuse of resources. If things get out of control in Coors, you send somebody down and bring up a fresh arm from Portland.

  3. 125 and counting

  4. There you go TW, Williamson is up.

Doesn’t the fact that Boch sent him out there again though lead you to believe that he isn’t hurt?

  5. Pitchers tend to show the effects of a longer outing like this even if they’re not hurt.

  6. Peavy finishes the 7th with 129 pitches, that’s a career high.

  7. Inning over. Thank god for JD Drew 1st pitch groundout. 129 total pitches

  8. because Peavy needs his pitching Mojo back and going 7 innings will build his confidence. Hes the kind of a guy who expects to be the team leader and to carry the pitching staff. Besides, when Bochy went for the phone, Peavy probably grouled so loud, Bochy got scred.

  9. I don’t think he is hurt, anymore. He changed his mechanics to deal with being hurt earlier. But mechanics degrade when you’re tired and he’s thrown almost 130 pitches. There’s just no reason to do that. The humidor has made Coors not quite so rough on pitching staffs and we need a healthy Peavy the rest of the way.

At least there’s a day off next Monday, so he’ll get extra rest.

  10. Exactly Farquaad, that’s what I’m getting at. Peavy threw between starts this last week (1st time in quite a while). Maybe he is just feeling better. Glad to see Bochy testing the boundaries of his pitcher’s health. Very reassuring decision.

    If he starts the 8th….

  11. Bard 1-4…what the hell’s wrong with him? We want Mirabelli back!

  12. Overheard at Dodger Stadium home bullpen:

Aaron Sele: Watch out for Gonzalez
    Broxton: Dynomite!

  13. Please tell me you are kidding, friarfan, about wanting that clubhouse cancer that is Mirabelli back!

  14. Peavy lowered his ERA to 5.01.

  15. Of course, SDPG!

  16. SDPG: Welcome — glad to have you with us!

Brian: That is the best song title ever. Ah, it’s so much easier to enjoy life when your team is winning. :-)

  17. Man, I dislike Broxton. Penny. Turnbow. Any of the pitchers that are cut in the shape of Paul Bunyan.

  18. GY – and winning when playing the Dodgers.

  19. Thanks, Geoff! I’ve been lurking for a few weeks, and decided today’s the day I insert myself in to the posts. I love your site and the knowledge that you have! Your post yesterday about our 3rd base possibilities was great.

  20. Oh no, here comes Linebrink, better get a few more runs. Of course, lets hope its the old LB we know and love. Randy Jones was saying LB trying to throw too hard and needs to work on his movement. We shall see. I guess RJ would know something about movement, although his BBQ made me have a movement one time, but never mind.

  21. Never mind, it williamson. saving LB for coors I guess.

  22. or the braves

  23. right on steve.

  24. why is EY in center, at least put roberts there, I hope cameron is not hurt

  25. LOL, PM! LB makes me nervous too. When he’s off, I call him “Sh*tbrick.”

  26. well this is a nice start for williamson

  27. I hope they’re just being preventative with Cameron. Why would they not move Roberts to center? He’s got better range than E-Y.

  28. I agree SDPG, and a better arm (but thats splitting hairs)

  29. whew…for a minute there I had visions of the bullpen letting another Peavy win slip away!

  30. I step away for a few minutes and EY is in center? Anyone listening to the radio? We need Iron Mike!

  31. yeah im listening to 1090

  32. Our lineup, by draft pick

    Round Overall
    28th / 781st – Roberts
    18th / 489th – Cameron
    17th / 435th – Giles
    62nd / 1390th – Piazza
    1st / 1st – Gonzalez
    1st / 13th – Khalil
    2nd / 35th – Bellhorn
    4th / 120th – Barfield

  33. I think Jerry Coleman has forgotten how to speak.

  34. Dodgers broadcast just announced a trade where the Mariners picked up a bat from Cleveland for a prospect. Looks like the Mariners consider themselves still in it so they likely won’t part with Beltre.

  35. Hurt or not, there’s no reason to run Peavy out there, or anyone for that matter for 130 pitches. Even if Peavy is feeling better, why would you take the chance on having the injury flare up again because his mechanics get out of whack from fatigue? I don’t care if Peavy gets an extra day off on Monday before pitching again on Tuesday or that Bochy want’s to rest his bullpen. Criminal.

  36. Did they litterally trade for a bat or is there a name involved? :)

  37. “Exploring the boundaries” is foolhardy. Does that hurt, Jake? How about that? Well, what about this? Oops.

  38. mariners got ben brusard

  39. Indians traded Broussard to Seattle for Choo.

    Bruce, testify!

  40. CLEVELAND — The Indians continued their midseason trading spree Wednesday by shipping first baseman Ben Broussard and cash to the Mariners for outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and a player to be named later.

  41. I wonder if they are planning on having him DH.

  42. Nothing like a day game to bring San Diego’s productivity level down

  43. Barfield stealing w/ 4 run lead? Is he gonna get plunked next time we play the Dodgers?

  44. c’mon thermal!

  45. Didn’t catch the name (was concentrating on work, go figure), but as I was typing heard Steiner refer to the player as “another bat”.

  46. Please let Sledge be just a PH and not take the field in the bottom of the ninth!

  47. I think it was more: let’s try not to hit into our 14th DP today by starting the runner.

In any event, I think we can take the dodgers in a rumble. Though I’d rather fight the Giants…they’re old.

  48. 4 runs is right on the borderline of the unwritten rule. The Dodgers wouldn’t have been mad if EY had bunted him over.

  49. Nice! I want Saito’s ERA to be 5.50 before the end of this inning!

  50. Scully said Bochy is appealing the commissiner’s office on the “hit” that was an “error” the other night on the Sledge play, because he wants to protect Linebrink’s ERA. Didn’t know that could be done.
