Since striking out 16 Braves on May 22, Jake Peavy is 1-5 with a 7.01 ERA over nine starts. I don’t have any easy answers for his struggles, and I doubt anyone else does either — otherwise he wouldn’t be struggling.
No TV Wednesday afternoon as the Pads go for the sweep in LA before heading to Denver for four against the Rockies.

Padres reportedly want Maddux
July 26, 2006
BY ROMAN MODROWSKI Staff Reporter
Chicago Sun Times
NEW YORK — The San Diego Padres reportedly are in the hunt for Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux, who would have to waive his no-trade clause to play for the National League West contenders.
Maddux lives in Las Vegas during the offseason and had talked about playing on the West Coast before signing with the Cubs in 2004.
The Cubs and Padres recently completed a swap of reliever Scott Williamson to San Diego for two pitching prospects. And the Padres have expressed interest in Maddux, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Any deal involving Maddux would be contingent not only on Maddux agreeing, but also on the Cubs receiving a quality player in return, either a major-leaguer or top prospect. Maddux’s presence in the clubhouse with the young pitchers still is considered a valuable commodity.
Maddux (8-11) beat the New York Mets on Monday, his first victory since June 9 in Cincinnati. It snapped a string of seven starts without a victory, including six losses.
July 26, 2006 at 8:34 am
Im all for getting Maddux but who would the pads have to give up for him? at this point in his career he is not worth a Kottaris or a Wells. I’m not even sure if I would give up Stauffer.
July 26, 2006 at 9:02 am
no I say a low-AA prospect could get him because he has been outright terrible in since May 1.
July 26, 2006 at 9:08 am
Let’s introduce the Cubs to Termell Sledge!
July 26, 2006 at 9:22 am
Supposidly, the Cubbies keep making noise about a higher level prospect…that may have to change since the Dodgers are probably out of the running for him (I Love them in last place!) and AZ still has not decided if they want to play in the game.
Would be fun to see him in a Pads uniform…and would be true to form…we seem to have a thing for aging HOF players at the very end of their career…
July 26, 2006 at 9:23 am
Mad dog would love petco, and our highly reated D, plus the wisdom he could impart to the young guys, plus be on a winning team and close to his off season home. Doubt he would veto the trade, but what do we give up for the old dog? And we still need a 3rd BM.
July 26, 2006 at 9:27 am
Sledge for Maddux that works for me!
July 26, 2006 at 9:35 am
I’d give up Stauffer for Maddux.
July 26, 2006 at 9:40 am
Me too Didi, Stauffer has a lot of potential, but potential doesn’t win ballgames, and Stauffer has not excelled in the bigs so far.
July 26, 2006 at 9:51 am
From the Savoring The Sweet Taste Of Schadenfeude Department comes this quote from Rangers’ manager Buck Showalter regarding Adam Eaton’s first start for the club: “He was pretty good the first three innings, but he lost command in the fourth,” manager Buck Showalter said. “We got a good glimpse of what he’s capable of. He was pretty impressive the first three innings.” Does that sound vaguely familiar to anyone else? Get used to it Buck.
July 26, 2006 at 9:51 am
How long is Maddux going to pitch? This just has the smell of his last year to me. I would rather see Stauffer used to get a legit 3B prospect.
If I thought Maddux would be good for a W in a playoff series I would be more tempted, but I just think he has been very average this year.
July 26, 2006 at 10:04 am
Maddux would be an interesting fit — it doesn’t address a huge need for us but if the price is right, why not?
On another note, I love this quote from Mike Cameron yesterday, talking about his throw home that kept the Dodgers from tying the game in the sixth: “He’s Toby Hall. He’s got no chance.”

July 26, 2006 at 10:06 am
Maddux doesn’t live in Vegas in the off season, he just built a place in Solano Beach. He would come here in a New York second!

I did a Padres prospect top 15 (16) list - check it out…

July 26, 2006 at 10:13 am
GY - re: #6 … yup, a vein pop’d … LOL!
Richard - what’s it mean when a lineup simulator recommends Giles to bat #9??? I’m really interested to understand how a model is designed that would lead to that result …
July 26, 2006 at 10:28 am
KT was on “The Herd” at 9:45 this morning. He was asked if he was going to make the Maddux deal and he responded like: We have a lot of irons in the fire right now. We are looking at starting pitching, but we’re sort of focusing on 3B right now. We are looking at third basemen, corner outfielders, and starting pitchers.
When asked by Colin Cowherd if he was interested or had discussed Soriano with Bowden, he replied (to the effect): Well, we have had discussions with the Nationals, but we haven’t really focused too much on Soriano. Besides, we’re really happy with the job Dave Roberts is doing in left and as our leadoff hitter.
He was asked if he was pleasantly surprised to be in 1st place despite only 4 wins from Jake Peavy, to which he replied he was and also called out Brian Giles performance.
Does anyone think the “corner outfielder” thing may be aimed at supplementing Giles and not so much Roberts? In other words, EY is gone, they’ll use Ben Johnson if they have too, but they would rather have three starting caliber outfielders who each play 2/3 of the time in right and left? Guillen, maybe?
July 26, 2006 at 10:54 am
Guillen is out for the season. He won’t be traded.
July 26, 2006 at 11:00 am
FriarFan, good analysis! I think Giles is worth more than a lot of Padres fans are giving him credit for. Up until his recent slide (.241/.318/.342 in July) he’s maintained a .400 OBP.
I still expect some sort of bounce-back, but we’ll see…
July 26, 2006 at 11:01 am
P.S. but a .375 slugging from a corner OF is tough to stomach.
July 26, 2006 at 11:03 am
re: Giles … he’s not 100% healthy, is he?
I’m wondering if, like we’re wondering about Jake, that there might be something more serious physically wrong with Giles???
July 26, 2006 at 11:10 am
Well we know his hamstring is bothering him. We watched him not get to that ball on Monday night… He absolutely would have gotten to that one if he was healthy…
July 26, 2006 at 11:29 am
Giles just need to get some rest time. He’s been playing every game since last season it seems to me.
Maybe this is a good time to try some of the youngster from AAA.
Ben Johnson may get a try at RF some. With the Doctor at LF and Cameron at CF, why not give him a chance. Just don’t start EY, please.
How about PMac? Can he play RF? It is a big space on that part of Petco with the porch also.
Good to read that KT is focusing on 3B first. Though, getting Maddux would be so so sweet.
July 26, 2006 at 11:36 am
Nice list of prospects, Peter. Good to know you are writing again on your own blog. We’ve missed reading your writings/comments.
July 26, 2006 at 11:41 am
BTW, Dioner Navarro is the starting catcher for Tampa Bay now.
Looks like Edwin Jackson got hit around again.

July 26, 2006 at 11:41 am
Any interest in Ty Wigginton? San Diego native, 28 yrs. old. Just hit his 18th HR today. Has real crappy OBP, but decent SLG. Not sure about his defense. His range seems somewhat limited, but he also gives options with versatility.
July 26, 2006 at 11:43 am
Would you rather (for argument sake):
Trade Nic Crosta and Luis Cruz for Greg Maddux
or
Trade Kottaras, Wells, and Ekstrom for Mark Prior (5.2IP 0ER today for Cubs)
July 26, 2006 at 11:47 am
Wow, Peter, you really love the 2006 draft class.
I’d have Hudgins on there instead of Bush or Cruz. And I’d say 5 tool is an exceedingly optimistic description of Bush. The Padres have told him to stop thinking he can hit for power like he did in HS with aluminum, because it’s just not going to happen. Royce Clayton can hit a HR if he runs into a BP fastball, too.
Sean Thompson over Ramos, too. That Mobile roster is pretty depressing.
July 26, 2006 at 11:47 am
Oh, one other thing from the interview on ESPN 800 with KT.
He said he has been communicating (via phone, IM, email, etc.), on average, with about 10-12 GMs each of the last couple days. That seem like a lot to anyone else? Especially given that nothing has happened (outside of Williamson - a deal I love, btw).
July 26, 2006 at 11:49 am
Friarfan,
Not only 0 ER for Prior today, but 0 hits in the 5.2 IP (with 5 BB tho’). Pulled after the 5th walk at 103 pitches.
July 26, 2006 at 11:49 am
Agreed TW. I’m high on Sean Thompson, especially given his recent performances. Interested to see what he’ll do when promoted to AAA, whenever that happens. Ramos…eh…not so much. Kyler Burke had another 0-4 last night (wood bat that tough of a hurdle?).
July 26, 2006 at 11:50 am
dprat -
Wonder why only 103 pitches? Dusty usually leaves him out to at least 180!
July 26, 2006 at 11:57 am
No doubt it was a tough decision for Dusty: “Sure he’s been on the DL all year, but in my day pitchers finished what they started. Anyway, if he’s throws 180 pitches but gets the no-hitter, not a bad way to end his career. Plus, it would easily be the highpoint for our season.”
Really, more I think about it, more I wonder how Dusty got up and asked for the ball.
July 26, 2006 at 12:02 pm
TW, that’s not my assessment. That’s what I read about Bush when he was draft, that’s what I’ve heard from my sources, that’s a concensus… He just hasn’t turned his “tools” into “skills.” The new Padres philosphy is go after skills rather than tools. Obviously the best is when you can blend the two…
The Padres told Matt to stop “trying” to hit for power, b/c when he does he strikes out or rolls over a grounder… When he just gets his pitch, he has natural power. They want him to start worrying about getting his pitch and let the power develop naturally.
Thanks Didi
July 26, 2006 at 12:05 pm
dprat, he got a call from the GM who said, “Dusty, if Mark throws more than 110 pitches, you’ll be looking for a job on Thursday.”
(well, at least most likely)
Remember when Prior throw 140+ in Colorado? Was that Baylor, Dusty, someone else managing the Cubs then?
July 26, 2006 at 12:11 pm
Today’s lineup:
Roberts
Cameron
Giles
Bard
Gonzalez
Bellhorn
Blum
Barfield
Peavy
Glad to see Khalil getting a day off. He looked HORRIBLE last night in every plate appearance.
July 26, 2006 at 12:13 pm
ESPN radio just said that Prior left the game after hurting himself covering 1st base.
Guy just can’t stay healthy.
July 26, 2006 at 12:16 pm
Then I do NOT make that trade!
9 pitches 1-2-3 in the first for Penny.
July 26, 2006 at 12:18 pm
why is blum at SS Greene has much much better stats during day games!
July 26, 2006 at 12:20 pm
Khalil looked like his bat weighed 100 lbs. last night. I think he needed a blow regardless of the splits. He was way behind pitches clocked at 87.
July 26, 2006 at 12:21 pm
I meant to say, I think Boch thinks he needed a blow regardless of the splits
July 26, 2006 at 12:24 pm
Must have hurt himself on the play prior to his final batter. Here’s the sequence:
Mets 6th
Mark Prior pitching:
Jose B. Reyes: Strike looking, Ball, Ball, Foul, Foul, Reyes popped out to second.
Endy Chavez: Ball, Foul, Ball, Ball, Foul, Foul, Chavez grounded out to first.
Carlos Beltran: Ball, Ball, Ball, Strike looking, Beltran walked.
Will Ohman relieved Mark Prior.
July 26, 2006 at 12:24 pm
1-0 LA
Peavy grooves one right down the middle to Saenz. 2B.
July 26, 2006 at 12:25 pm
Peavy’s started every batter of the game (except Saenz - 1st pitch swinging) with a ball.
July 26, 2006 at 12:28 pm
Kevin Goldstein in the 2006 BA chat said Bush “could develop into a Royce Clayton type.” Royce Clayton, with his career 369 SLG. Doesn’t seem like the consensus is quite so sanguine on Bush’s natural power or his stick in general. If the bar on hitting for power and hitting for average is set that low, everybody’s a 5 tool player.
July 26, 2006 at 12:29 pm
So much for Peavy’s mechanical adjustments. He’s all over the place according to gametracker.
July 26, 2006 at 12:33 pm
I’m no Dusty fan, but the Cubs were about 10 pitches from the WS in 2003. Ask a Cubs fan if they’d trade Mark Prior for a WS appearance. Teams should protect young arms, but a college kid with clean mechanics and you’re fighting for the playoffs, I give him a pass on some of Prior’s workload. Not on his fascination with Neifi Perez, though.
Has anyone looked at Peavy’s splits during this bad stretch to see if he’s a lot worse with men on base?
July 26, 2006 at 12:33 pm
So, when Peavy’s 4-15 with a 5.50 ERA, what happens then? If he’s healthy, doesn’t that just mean he sucks? I mean, it saddens me to say it, but is our boy the next Randy Jones? Brilliance for a couple years and then slowly fade into mediocrity?
July 26, 2006 at 12:35 pm
Single for Bard. He’s PISSED his average has dropped below .370. Humiliated, really.
July 26, 2006 at 12:37 pm
Randy Jones was always walking the razor’s edge, like Mark Fidrych. Peavy’s still striking people out, he’s just so much more hittable.
July 26, 2006 at 12:38 pm
…and a DP from Adrian.
July 26, 2006 at 12:41 pm
Friar, I don’t buy for a minute that Peavy is healthy. I don’t think anyone on the Padres has asserted that he’s healthy. Peavy himself has said he feels great or better, but the fact he had cortisone shots over the ASB tells me he’s still in pain, as are the mechanical adjustments that were made to compensate.
July 26, 2006 at 12:45 pm
Following up on a string on Harold Reynolds yesterday. Reynold’s was quoted as saying he did nothing wrong, he hugged a woman who worked for ESPN and the hug was misinterpreted. Sounds like the first rumor was correct.
July 26, 2006 at 12:53 pm
Looks like a terrific at-bat for Josh there.
July 26, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Nice AB from Barfield! How can you not like this kid?
July 26, 2006 at 12:54 pm
I want to have Josh Barfield’s baby.
July 26, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Jake - nice rippa!
July 26, 2006 at 12:55 pm
Can I get odds on a Sportscenter anchor saying Peavy “helped his own cause”?
July 26, 2006 at 12:55 pm
I hope you have wide hips, Vin just said his younger brother is 6′-5″.
July 26, 2006 at 12:56 pm
Can Jake play 3B?
July 26, 2006 at 12:56 pm
Three consecutive doubles. That’s wicked.
July 26, 2006 at 12:57 pm
3 doubles in a row, this is getting fun, now if only Peavy can settle down on the hill.
July 26, 2006 at 12:57 pm
DR D friggin R
July 26, 2006 at 12:57 pm
FF are you a chick?
July 26, 2006 at 12:57 pm
Maybe that’s Jake’s problem — all that extra BP has screwed up his pitching mechanics.
July 26, 2006 at 12:58 pm
Somewhere in the bowels of Dodger Stadium, Mark Grant can be heard murmuring “crooked numbers, crooked numbers, crooked numbers…”
July 26, 2006 at 12:58 pm
LOL - Grant’s probably passed out on couch somewhere w/ his hand between 2 pillows.
July 26, 2006 at 12:59 pm
C’mon, Brian. Time to get fat. Make hay while the sun shines. Pile on. Other cliches.
July 26, 2006 at 12:59 pm
THOSE AREN’T PILLOWS!!!!!!!
July 26, 2006 at 12:59 pm
TW, no. Why do you ask?
Nothing wrong with a little man crush, now and again, ask Brian Giles.

Penny’s not gonna make it out of the inning.
July 26, 2006 at 1:00 pm
The hit parade continues. 4 runs in and no one out. Nice.
July 26, 2006 at 1:01 pm
damn. that rally died fast.
July 26, 2006 at 1:02 pm
Dang, that ended faster than it should have.
July 26, 2006 at 1:03 pm
Hi! Just wanted to post a quick note to introduce myself to Ducksnorts. I’ve been reading for a few weeks and love this site! Finally, Padres fans that are upbeat and don’t pounce viciously over the players and other posters.
GO Padres!
And I, too, wish to have Josh Barfield’s baby. Or Josh Bard’s.
July 26, 2006 at 1:04 pm
FF, are you saying No you haven’t looked at Peavy’s splits (my question) or No you’re not a woman (Peter’s question)?
July 26, 2006 at 1:05 pm
StL 4 - Col 0.
If we win today, Colorado loses and then we take 3 of 4 from them, they’ll be 8.5 out.
July 26, 2006 at 1:06 pm
“Finally, Padres fans that are upbeat and don’t pounce viciously over the players and other posters.”
While many eyes virtually turn towards me across the ether.
July 26, 2006 at 1:09 pm
Just came back from a run, its frigging hot and humid and I bet LA is worse. But then again I’m not getting paid millions either. Jake looks much better. Three doubles is a witch. Lets keep it going. SDPG, welcome to the marry band of Padres fans.
July 26, 2006 at 1:09 pm
Peavy for 3B!!
July 26, 2006 at 1:10 pm
NIce 1-2-3 by Jake, especially after the big inning.
July 26, 2006 at 1:10 pm
TW: Hey wait until Richard shows up.
July 26, 2006 at 1:12 pm
I am not a “chick” TW. I have looked at Peavy’s splits. They’re real and they are spectacular!
Maybe I should be posting comments like that over at GaslampBall, eh?
July 26, 2006 at 1:13 pm
Peavy: 2nd HR of season.
July 26, 2006 at 1:13 pm
Is anyone listening to the Dodgers radio broadcast (MLB.com). This sounds like Charlie Steiner (sp?).
Why did he leave the Yankees?
July 26, 2006 at 1:14 pm
Holy Schnikey!
July 26, 2006 at 1:14 pm
Wait did Peavy just jack another bomb?
July 26, 2006 at 1:14 pm
4 rbi’s for Jake.
July 26, 2006 at 1:14 pm
yeah im really open to peavy taking over at 3B at this point.
July 26, 2006 at 1:15 pm
I hope Penny’s gone by the next time Jake comes to bat, ’cause he’s gonna get one in the ear.
July 26, 2006 at 1:15 pm
Thanks for the welcome, PM! Is it possible for me to be impregnated by three guys? Now I want Jake Peavy’s baby.
July 26, 2006 at 1:15 pm
Maybe Peavy should play 3B. He’s got a higher slugging percentage than Vinny now!
July 26, 2006 at 1:15 pm
I think peavy is sick of not getting any run support so he took it upon himself to changing that
July 26, 2006 at 1:17 pm
Farquaad: that is indeed Charley Steiner; he moved out to LA to be the Dodgers’ radio voice a couple of years ago. I can’t recall why he left NY.
July 26, 2006 at 1:17 pm
“Is it possible for me to be impregnated by three guys?”
Uhhhh… What is happening to Ducksnorts?
Hahahaha
July 26, 2006 at 1:18 pm
FF,
re: “I have looked at Peavy’s splits. They’re real and they are spectacular!”
LOL… thanks for that.
July 26, 2006 at 1:19 pm
LOL, KRS1! I’m just happy to see what looked to be a very shaky game get busted wide open by my Pads.
July 26, 2006 at 1:19 pm
jake has doubled his season RBI total within the last 2 innings
July 26, 2006 at 1:19 pm
Why could Charlie Steiner possibly be lured away from NY to LA…hmmm…I don’t know?
Maybe he prefers a little smog now and again to the constant smell of stale urine.
July 26, 2006 at 1:22 pm
peavy now has more homeruns than blumer
July 26, 2006 at 1:22 pm
SD Padres gal is my kind of gal.
July 26, 2006 at 1:23 pm
Padres Gal - you can get impregnated by three guys, but you might have better luck if you become an NBA fan.
OK, that was wrong. I apologize.
Back to the Pads - this might be just what the doctor ordered for Jake. Get a lead, a couple of hits and he relaxes a little out there and his muscle memory and natural talent just takes over. 5 K’s already is a good sign.
July 26, 2006 at 1:23 pm
re: Kevin Towers
I don’t think that is a high number of GMs to be talking to. Jim Bowden talked to 27 teams yesterday. Usually, talking to 10-15 teams produces only one deal.
