first pitch: 5:10 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Tim Stauffer (1-2, 3.93 ERA) vs Carlos Silva (5-3, 3.15 ERA)
previews: CBS | Padres.com
Wow, Silva has walked just 4 batters in 80 innings this year! And he’s striking out fewer than three batters per 9 innings. Bizarre.
Okay, my wife is “anxious” to leave the hotel room, so you’ll have to provide the rest of the analysis today. Here’s hoping Minnesota is kinder to the Padres than was Detroit.
Quick Hits
- Padres’ quiet bats drive Bochy batty (U-T). We’re right there with ya, buddy. BTW, there is an intriguing right-handed option languishing at the end of your bench.
- Peter at San Diego Spotlight will be on “Outta Left Field” sometime next week. Blogs will take over the world.
- Eaton injury not as bad as thought (U-T). Strained flexor tendon in right middle finger might cause him to miss a start.
- So You Can Remind Me That I Was Wrong (Friar Faithful). Richard lets us know where he stands in regard to various ideas currently being bandied about. Tony Womack? I wasn’t aware that was even an option. Sweet Kerry Robinson, what could Womack possibly have to offer the Padres? Maybe someone can talk Enzo Hernandez out of retirement.
- Eugene Emeralds 2005 roster (Scout.com). Several 2005 draftees will be there, including supplemental first-rounder Cesar Ramos.
Burroughs is 3 for 4. He’d need to hit .750 all season to be the player I once thought he’d be.
Richard, put down from the shotgun!
Put what down from the shotgun?
Nice to see Nady is enjoying another big-league ballgame up close and personal. Wish I could get seats that good.
He’s only third on the team in EqA, why let him play?
Fourth, rather. Roberts has moved ahead of him.
Progress from Burroughs:
He struck out, instead of hitting a weak-ass grounder to short.
Power hitters tend to strike out a lot, so this is good.
Question #1 for the Pizza Feed: Why is the team’s 3rd best hitter not getting very many ABs?
Strikeouts are actually a bad sign for contact hitters. Don’t you read your Baseball Prospectus?
I sure thought that was gone.
I’m sure Bochy checks EqA every day before filling out the lineup card.
I almost threw up that excellent salsa I had earlier. That would have burned coming up…
Bochy is saving Nady for a PH appearance when Seanez is due up.
Question #2: Please fire Bruce Bochy… uh… ? There.
Anybody else remember Glenn Williams, who’s now in playing 3B for Twins? He was signed by the Braves at age 16 … was touted enough for a friend of mine to draft him in a deep roto league … I saw him play up here in Eugene in 1995 … amazing how long some guys will hang in there … he could be the next Mike Easler!
Nady is actually the last one off the bench now. Woody and Eaton are more likely to make a PH than he is at the moment.
I didn’t get signed up for the Pizza Feed.
I am so very, very bitter.
I wish Rudy would quit doing that.
He’s about to give us all heart attacks.
Lance, I reserved two ticket because I forgot my girlfriend couldn’t make it.
This is like batting practice. I am vary scared.
*tickets, that’s plural.
You could make the argument that if you’re not going to use Nady but could trade him for someone useful, why not trade him? He’s the 20-somethingth guy off the bench now. If he can bring something useful in a deal, why not make a trade?
I’d rather trade Nevin and let Nady/Klesko start at first base.
Does that mean you have an extra, Richard?!?
You’re right, though, Brian. If you’re not going to use him. Why not trade him?
But we both know that won’t happen, Richard. Between Nady and Nevin, who’d you ask for?
Brian G., I made that point regarding Nady at Friar Faithful. That’s the Padre blog where Richard carries me on his back.
I don’t have anything yet, I still haven’t paid for them.
I like the Matsui/Nevin scenario that was suggested by whatever newspaper it was (some fish wrap from New Jersey, I think).
Nady’s treatment has been horrible. I was so hoping that we would use him this year like the Rangers used Texeiria two season ago.
Richard and Geoff carry us all on their backs.
We’ve got a baserunner, and Greene has to get a hit sometime, right?
Shit, he’s bunting.
Blum’s on, will Greene bunt?
Just read Lance’s comments. Klesko is also better than Nady.
Greene’s not looking to good trying to bunt.
What a waste.
Richard, email me. I’ll buy the tix for both of us.
I do love the “Womack is Enzo Hernandez without the cool name” sentiment.
With May having thrown 5+ yessterday, that means we’re down to Reyes and Hoffman in the bullpen.
Scoring now is a nifty idea.
I’m listening to Ted and Jerry talk about the league-wide decline in bunting skills.
Maybe because players spend their time on skills that MATTER MORE!
Crap!! Double play.
I don’t hate Phil Nevin. I like Nevin. I think he was a good player. His good days are behind him. Not just his “best days,” but his “good days.”
Shall we talk about having players attempt a bunt when they don’t bunt that often? Greene’s AB ruined the whole inning and now we will have to watch Reyes blow the game.
Damn. Reyes is in.
Which Twin will get the game winning homer?
The Twins were going to hit again. I’d have gone for the throat, with a big inning. Greene was our chance to do that.
Richard/Lance (and anyone else who reserved tix to the Pizza Feed, which won’t have any Pizza being served, btw) … an email went out recently with details on how to buy your tickets … NOW is the time to do so …
I have to say, at this point, I feel for all of you who are not in San Diego. I have a new appreciation for the situation. This sucks not being able to watch the Padres on TV.
Bochy should pull him.
Morneau, Bruce. Hold your breath.
