In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Twins (17 Jun 2005)
Fri, Jun 17, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 5:10 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Tim Stauffer (1-2, 3.93 ERA) vs Carlos Silva (5-3, 3.15 ERA)
previews: CBS | Padres.com
Wow, Silva has walked just 4 batters in 80 innings this year! And he’s striking out fewer than three batters per 9 innings. Bizarre.
Okay, my wife is “anxious” to leave the hotel room, so you’ll have to provide the rest of the analysis today. Here’s hoping Minnesota is kinder to the Padres than was Detroit.
Quick Hits
- Padres’ quiet bats drive Bochy batty (U-T). We’re right there with ya, buddy. BTW, there is an intriguing right-handed option languishing at the end of your bench.
- Peter at San Diego Spotlight will be on “Outta Left Field” sometime next week. Blogs will take over the world.
- Eaton injury not as bad as thought (U-T). Strained flexor tendon in right middle finger might cause him to miss a start.
- So You Can Remind Me That I Was Wrong (Friar Faithful). Richard lets us know where he stands in regard to various ideas currently being bandied about. Tony Womack? I wasn’t aware that was even an option. Sweet Kerry Robinson, what could Womack possibly have to offer the Padres? Maybe someone can talk Enzo Hernandez out of retirement.
- Eugene Emeralds 2005 roster (Scout.com). Several 2005 draftees will be there, including supplemental first-rounder Cesar Ramos.
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.
June 17, 2005 at 10:35 am
Thanks for the link to the Eugene Emeralds roster … I’m going to their Opening Day, next Tuesday, June 21st … hoping to see Ramos pitch and Erskine @ 1B and Killian behind the plate!
See you at the BP Pizza Feed?
June 17, 2005 at 11:09 am
LynchMob,
The Pizza Feed will not be on the third deck patio this year as it was last year. BP website says: “The Pizza Feed will take place in the Padres new indoor facility, the Auditorium.”
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/events/
Not sure where that is.
Should be good, though; last year definitely was. You can sometimes question Towers’ decisions, but his straight-forward and honest answers to questions are refreshing and unusual in his line of work.
June 17, 2005 at 11:41 am
Just to remind you things could be much, MUCH worse (though I am by no means suggesting they couldn’t get a whole lot better either): The Colorado Rockies have a 4-26 record away from home. Not since 1916 has a major league team — the 3-25 Philadelphia Athletics — started with a worse road record.
And Eric Gagne is facing shoulder surgery.
June 17, 2005 at 12:31 pm
Thanks dprat. I’ll have to find that auditorium next week before Friday’s game.
I agree with you about Towers. I also found him to be very honest and straight forward (I wasn’t surprised at all he was the only GM who came out publicly to say he had steroid suspicions), and it was a wonderful experience being able to hear him speak in person and ask him questions.
June 17, 2005 at 1:11 pm
Well I would be interested in WHY the Padres told the Phillies that they had NO interest in Polanco after the Phillies called when Loretta went down?
rambling on..Was it money? Or was it that they didnt like Polanco? Or maybe they didnt like what the Phillies were asking in return?
I sure am curious to know..
June 17, 2005 at 1:17 pm
Geoff,
Thanks for the plug and for sending the “Outta Left Field” producer my contact info.
I think the Padres win tonight, but I have to admit, I’m not confident about a series win.
June 17, 2005 at 1:52 pm
Good news from the CWS … http://ncaasports.com/baseball.....sh_rate=60 … Headley hits HR in 9th inning of Game 1
June 17, 2005 at 2:14 pm
dprat … THANKS … I hadn’t noticed the location before. It’s my understanding that the event will start when the gates open (= 5pm). (note: a previous poster thought the gates open at 430 … but that’s the Park At The Park that opens 2.5 hours before the game … the main gates will open @ 5pm)
Also, I’ve confirmed that there will NOT be Pizza served
So, is there a place to meet beforehand? 330-4ish?
June 17, 2005 at 2:28 pm
Ooops, my bad … Headley’s HR was in 7th inning … and Josh Alley (our 10th round pick) scored on the HR … Go Vols!
June 17, 2005 at 5:44 pm
You can NOT strike out LOOKING, with two outs and runners in scoring position!
geeeesh!!
June 17, 2005 at 6:09 pm
well its about time. Giles tattoo’ed a 3-0 pitch to drive in one and Nevin waited for a 2-1 fastball to drill an rbi single.
Nice inning until Ramon forgot how many outs there were and got doubled off first.
June 17, 2005 at 6:46 pm
I really, really, really needed that double play!
June 17, 2005 at 6:54 pm
From The Associated Press: Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that RHP Adam Eaton will miss his next scheduled start, Monday night against the Dodgers in San Diego. Eaton left Wednesday’s game in Detroit in the second inning with a sore middle finger on his throwing hand. The Padres will insert LHP Darryl May into the rotation for Sunday’s game at Minnesota, and bump everybody else back a day, with RHP Jake Peavy getting the first start against Los Angeles on Monday. … Bochy said he’d likely stick with Ryan Klesko and Brian Giles in the outfield instead of starting one of them as the designated hitter during the series in Minnesota. “Some guys just aren’t as comfortable as the DH,” said Bochy, who noted that Klesko’s defense in left field has shown improvement this season. … After a 22-win May, the best month in franchise history, the Padres are 3-11 in June.
June 17, 2005 at 7:17 pm
Stauffer has been terrific since his call up.
June 17, 2005 at 7:18 pm
Where is everybody???
I just posted a massive response to Richard’s last post over at Friar Faithful, if anybody is interested…
I stopped at Batgirl’s site to read the in-game comments of Twin fans. Here’s one:
“I still can’t get over how skinny Ryan Klesko is now. He used to be a hulk. Oh, and I really, REALLY hate Phil Nevin.”
Maybe Richard posted this.
June 17, 2005 at 7:22 pm
Beats the hell out of me, Lance.
I got in late. Tracked Stauffer’s pitch count. ESPNO says 99 total, but their PITCH BY PITCH log only shows 97
June 17, 2005 at 7:26 pm
Richard has Phil Nevin issues.
June 17, 2005 at 7:33 pm
Gee, ya think?
I suggested psychiatric help for him in my last Friar Faithful post.
Do any of you guys read “Batgirl?”
When this game’s over, go check out the in-game discussion there. The site totally lacks any analytical content, but it’s as funny and well written as anything on the internet.
In the meantime, we’re hanging onto a slim lead. I’m holding my breath…
June 17, 2005 at 7:38 pm
Ramon is out of the game now — hurt his wrist in the last inning. THAT can’t be good.
June 17, 2005 at 7:42 pm
I just threw up in my mouth.
June 17, 2005 at 7:43 pm
I’m guessing that Corky’s Pest Control won’t be re-upping their deal with Aki.
June 17, 2005 at 7:44 pm
With the Dodgers and DBacks losing, at least the worst the Padres can do is still be in first place after tonight.
Not properly phrased but you know what I mean.
June 17, 2005 at 7:51 pm
I’m so glad that Bochy decided to remove Klesko for Jackson (of course DJ gets a double to make me look bad!). Still a very KRob move for Bochy in a close ballgame.
June 17, 2005 at 7:53 pm
Why did Klesko leave the game? “For defensive purposes”?
Also, I see Burroughs is 3-for-4 … looks like all singles … all “single to left”s?
June 17, 2005 at 7:54 pm
Wow, either that question took me 2 minutes to ask … or Bruce is REALLY fast
June 17, 2005 at 7:57 pm
Just got back from the Jays game. That Rickie Weeks kid looks good for the Brewers. So we’re tied?
June 17, 2005 at 7:59 pm
Nady is the second-to-last (or last) guy off the bench now?
June 17, 2005 at 7:59 pm
And I just looked at Yahoo’s play-by-play to answer my own question about Burroughs … looks like NONE of his singles were “single to left” … which is a good thing … but his one out came in his only RISP situation … and he hit the ball to left for a DP … which is a bad thing … the guy can’t win for losin’ …
June 17, 2005 at 7:59 pm
Hi, Geoff.
June 17, 2005 at 7:59 pm
Yeah, we’re tied, and I am so very bitter…
June 17, 2005 at 8:00 pm
Hi, Geoff.
June 17, 2005 at 8:00 pm
LM, I can’t tell you how many times I have typed comments out for what seem like forever only to have the action make them irrelevent.
That being said, I have learned to be more concise.
June 17, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Seanez breezes thru their 9 (PH), 1, 2 hitters …
- M. Ryan struck out swinging
- S. Stewart popped out to shallow right
- L. Rodriguez struck out swinging
… on 12 pitches … well done!
June 17, 2005 at 8:02 pm
Bruce, concise is good, eh?
(the “eh” was for Geoff
June 17, 2005 at 8:02 pm
Just got back from Cajon Speedway. Seanez has filthy stuff.
June 17, 2005 at 8:03 pm
I’m concerned that if Nevin doesn’t do something here, Richard may stalk and kill him.
At least it would get us out of the contract.
June 17, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Nevin, who is constantly swinging at balls out of the zone, just took a called strike three. What the hell?
June 17, 2005 at 8:04 pm
I try to be, but I am legally trained which has made it damn well impossible to be concise most of the time.
Another K for Richard’s favorite.
June 17, 2005 at 8:04 pm
Oh, ****. Nevin struck out. Richard’s gonna kill him, for sure.
June 17, 2005 at 8:04 pm
I just noticed that Reyes has allowed 34 H and 21 BB in 33 IP. 55 baserunners in 33 IP?!? Yikes! Yet his ERA is still just 3.51? Is that because he enters games in the middle of innings and allows other guys’ men on base to score?
June 17, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Two days ago, I asked Marc if he knew if dead players’ families still got to collect on the rest of their salaries.
June 17, 2005 at 8:05 pm
And now Ojeda: these are bondafide rally starters here with Nev and Miggy.
June 17, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Richard, don’t do anything foolish. He’s just a ballplayer; he’s not worth going to prison for.
June 17, 2005 at 8:06 pm
Bochy considers Ojeda the best fastball hitter on the team. Wow. Look at him go. Woo.
June 17, 2005 at 8:06 pm
Tony Womack woulda beat that out.
June 17, 2005 at 8:06 pm
I was just wondering if it was in the best interest of the team to wish him harm, not to do him harm.
June 17, 2005 at 8:07 pm
Burroughs has just about used up his good luch for the evening.
June 17, 2005 at 8:07 pm
Can Tony Womack catch? If he could, he’d be a substantial upgrade over Ojeda.
June 17, 2005 at 8:07 pm
Good luck even.
June 17, 2005 at 8:08 pm
It’d be nice to have a power threat at the plate right now …
June 17, 2005 at 8:08 pm
Burroughs is 3 for 4. He’d need to hit .750 all season to be the player I once thought he’d be.
June 17, 2005 at 8:08 pm
Richard, put down from the shotgun!
June 17, 2005 at 8:08 pm
Put what down from the shotgun?
June 17, 2005 at 8:08 pm
Nice to see Nady is enjoying another big-league ballgame up close and personal. Wish I could get seats that good.
June 17, 2005 at 8:09 pm
He’s only third on the team in EqA, why let him play?
June 17, 2005 at 8:10 pm
Fourth, rather. Roberts has moved ahead of him.
June 17, 2005 at 8:10 pm
Progress from Burroughs:
He struck out, instead of hitting a weak-*** grounder to short.
Power hitters tend to strike out a lot, so this is good.
June 17, 2005 at 8:11 pm
Question #1 for the Pizza Feed: Why is the team’s 3rd best hitter not getting very many ABs?
June 17, 2005 at 8:11 pm
Strikeouts are actually a bad sign for contact hitters. Don’t you read your Baseball Prospectus?
June 17, 2005 at 8:11 pm
I sure thought that was gone.
June 17, 2005 at 8:12 pm
I’m sure Bochy checks EqA every day before filling out the lineup card.
June 17, 2005 at 8:12 pm
I almost threw up that excellent salsa I had earlier. That would have burned coming up…
June 17, 2005 at 8:12 pm
Bochy is saving Nady for a PH appearance when Seanez is due up.
June 17, 2005 at 8:13 pm
Question #2: Please fire Bruce Bochy… uh… ? There.
June 17, 2005 at 8:13 pm
Anybody else remember Glenn Williams, who’s now in playing 3B for Twins? He was signed by the Braves at age 16 … was touted enough for a friend of mine to draft him in a deep roto league … I saw him play up here in Eugene in 1995 … amazing how long some guys will hang in there … he could be the next Mike Easler!
June 17, 2005 at 8:13 pm
Nady is actually the last one off the bench now. Woody and Eaton are more likely to make a PH than he is at the moment.
June 17, 2005 at 8:13 pm
I didn’t get signed up for the Pizza Feed.
I am so very, very bitter.
June 17, 2005 at 8:14 pm
I wish Rudy would quit doing that.
June 17, 2005 at 8:14 pm
He’s about to give us all heart attacks.
June 17, 2005 at 8:15 pm
Lance, I reserved two ticket because I forgot my girlfriend couldn’t make it.
June 17, 2005 at 8:15 pm
This is like batting practice. I am vary scared.
June 17, 2005 at 8:15 pm
*tickets, that’s plural.
June 17, 2005 at 8:15 pm
You could make the argument that if you’re not going to use Nady but could trade him for someone useful, why not trade him? He’s the 20-somethingth guy off the bench now. If he can bring something useful in a deal, why not make a trade?
June 17, 2005 at 8:16 pm
I’d rather trade Nevin and let Nady/Klesko start at first base.
June 17, 2005 at 8:16 pm
Does that mean you have an extra, Richard?!?
June 17, 2005 at 8:16 pm
You’re right, though, Brian. If you’re not going to use him. Why not trade him?
June 17, 2005 at 8:17 pm
But we both know that won’t happen, Richard. Between Nady and Nevin, who’d you ask for?
June 17, 2005 at 8:17 pm
Brian G., I made that point regarding Nady at Friar Faithful. That’s the Padre blog where Richard carries me on his back.
June 17, 2005 at 8:17 pm
I don’t have anything yet, I still haven’t paid for them.
June 17, 2005 at 8:18 pm
I like the Matsui/Nevin scenario that was suggested by whatever newspaper it was (some fish wrap from New Jersey, I think).
June 17, 2005 at 8:19 pm
Nady’s treatment has been horrible. I was so hoping that we would use him this year like the Rangers used Texeiria two season ago.
June 17, 2005 at 8:20 pm
Richard and Geoff carry us all on their backs.
June 17, 2005 at 8:20 pm
We’ve got a baserunner, and Greene has to get a hit sometime, right?
****, he’s bunting.
June 17, 2005 at 8:20 pm
Blum’s on, will Greene bunt?
June 17, 2005 at 8:20 pm
Just read Lance’s comments. Klesko is also better than Nady.
June 17, 2005 at 8:21 pm
Greene’s not looking to good trying to bunt.
June 17, 2005 at 8:22 pm
What a waste.
June 17, 2005 at 8:22 pm
Richard, email me. I’ll buy the tix for both of us.
June 17, 2005 at 8:23 pm
I do love the “Womack is Enzo Hernandez without the cool name” sentiment.
June 17, 2005 at 8:23 pm
With May having thrown 5+ yessterday, that means we’re down to Reyes and Hoffman in the bullpen.
Scoring now is a nifty idea.
June 17, 2005 at 8:24 pm
I’m listening to Ted and Jerry talk about the league-wide decline in bunting skills.
Maybe because players spend their time on skills that MATTER MORE!
****!! Double play.
June 17, 2005 at 8:24 pm
I don’t hate Phil Nevin. I like Nevin. I think he was a good player. His good days are behind him. Not just his “best days,” but his “good days.”
June 17, 2005 at 8:25 pm
Shall we talk about having players attempt a bunt when they don’t bunt that often? Greene’s AB ruined the whole inning and now we will have to watch Reyes blow the game.
June 17, 2005 at 8:26 pm
Damn. Reyes is in.
June 17, 2005 at 8:26 pm
Which Twin will get the game winning homer?
June 17, 2005 at 8:26 pm
The Twins were going to hit again. I’d have gone for the throat, with a big inning. Greene was our chance to do that.
June 17, 2005 at 8:27 pm
Richard/Lance (and anyone else who reserved tix to the Pizza Feed, which won’t have any Pizza being served, btw) … an email went out recently with details on how to buy your tickets … NOW is the time to do so …
June 17, 2005 at 8:27 pm
I have to say, at this point, I feel for all of you who are not in San Diego. I have a new appreciation for the situation. This sucks not being able to watch the Padres on TV.
June 17, 2005 at 8:27 pm
Bochy should pull him.
June 17, 2005 at 8:27 pm
Morneau, Bruce. Hold your breath.
June 17, 2005 at 8:27 pm
Game over.
June 17, 2005 at 8:28 pm
Too late.
June 17, 2005 at 8:28 pm
I thought it was over. And with Ford on third, it probably is.
TOTALLY Nevin’s fault.
June 17, 2005 at 8:28 pm
Reyes sucks.
June 17, 2005 at 8:29 pm
How about trade Nady for a relief pitcher who’s better than Reyes?
June 17, 2005 at 8:29 pm
Reyes should be cut tomorrow. I am sure they are blinded by his ERA.
June 17, 2005 at 8:29 pm
I honestly don’t blame Nevin for anything. Is it his fault he’s not any good? No. It’s Bochy’s fault that he is put in a position where he is set up to fail.
June 17, 2005 at 8:30 pm
Stauffer continues to struggle mightily in the first inning. He’s made seven starts this year. His line in the first inning reads:
7IP-10H-8R-8ER-3BB-1K
(Plus one home run to Felipe Lopez and two hit batsmen in his debut May 11 at Cincy)
1st Inning ERA = 10.29
1st Inning H/9 = 12.86
1st Inning K/9 = 1.29
1st Inning WHIP = 2.14 (2HBP)
Otherwise, his line reads:
34-2/3IP-30H-11R-11ER-12BB-25K
ERA = 2.86
H/9 = 7.79
K/9 = 6.49
WHIP = 1.21
Stauffer has averaged 96.7 pitches per start, but that average includes more than one-quarter of those pitches, 24.9, in the first inning.
Stauffer’s first-inning pitch counts, with total pitches-strikes-balls:
May 11, @ Cincinnati, 27-14-13
May 16, v. Atlanta, 30-16-14
May 22, @ Seattle, 12- 7- 5
May 28, @ San Francis 19- 8-11
June 2, v. Chic Cubs 30-17-13
June 11, v. Chic Sox 21-19- 2
June 17, @ Minnesota 35-21-14
Total 174-102-72
In short, Bochy and the Padres pitching coach have to figure out how to get Stauffer out of the box sharper. The kid keeps pitching from behind and spending one-quarter of his effort just to record the first three outs.
June 17, 2005 at 8:30 pm
What a terrible way to lose a game.
June 17, 2005 at 8:31 pm
Why isn’t Hoffman in? This is a high leverage situation isn’t? Or is Bochy conceding the game? Doesn’t matter, Twins score as I type.
June 17, 2005 at 8:31 pm
Nicely done, Iced.
June 17, 2005 at 8:32 pm
I am really tired of Bruce Bochy and his inept management.
June 17, 2005 at 8:33 pm
Pathetic. There goes our best shot at winning a game this series since we have to look at Radke and Santana the next two days running Lawrence and May out there to oppose them. 0-6 road trip here we come.
June 17, 2005 at 8:33 pm
Kid makes it through a 35-pitch first inning, guts it out for five, and leaves with a 4-3 lead.
Then the bats go silent.
And the pen pisses it away!
June 17, 2005 at 8:33 pm
Your odds of scoring with a man on second and one out are lower than your odds of scoring with a man on first and none out. This should be common knowledge.
June 17, 2005 at 8:34 pm
Also, why has Aki taken Linebrink’s job? Linebrink has better stuff and doesn’t get flustered like Aki does.
June 17, 2005 at 8:36 pm
Iced: What Richard said; very nice analysis of Stauffer.
On a more general note, you know what’s really irritating? The Giants are only 7 1/2 games out of first place. They should be completely out of it by now. This could still end up being a four-team race.
June 17, 2005 at 8:36 pm
I’m going to the bathroom to down a bottle of rubbing alcohol.
June 17, 2005 at 8:36 pm
If you need only one run it makes sense to sac bunt with a runner on second and none out, but in almost no other situation. Also, the only time you need only one run is when it is the bottom of the 9th, bottom of the 10th, etc.
