television: Channel 4
matchup: Brian Lawrence (4-6, 4.42 ERA) vs Elmer Dessens (0-0, 3.32 ERA)
previews: ESPN | CBS | Padres.com

You are trying to establish yourself as a credible playoff contender. Which of the following do you do?

  1. Lose twice in the same month to a Rule V draftee.
  2. Go 2-4 while establishing leads of 2-0 or greater in six straight games.
  3. Start a third baseman whose ISO is lower than those of Cesar Izturis, David Eckstein, Luis Castillo, and 164 other big-league hitters with the requisite number of plate appearances.
  4. Bat said third baseman ahead of your best power source to date again despite homers in four consecutive games from the latter.
  5. All of the above.

  1. Randy Ready was a solid ballplayer. As Bill James said, you could run him out there and tell him to lead the league in walks, and he’d do it. And on a decent team he’d score 120 runs, with decent defense.

  2. Geoff, you best not shortchange me my “smileys”
    Just sayin’

  3. I agree, Lance. He had that one year where he made going to the park worthwhile. Anyone know/recall if he got his health problems rectified?

  4. Brian, you’re talking about Ready?

  5. Off topic: I still think Nevin has one big month in him. A .400/.590 July (he has at least one of those every year) would quickly bring his numbers up to .330/.470.

  6. …and thanks, Geoff. I’ve had my fix now.

  7. Yes. Sorry for the confusing conversation streams.

  8. Calling all white supremacists….we need some K’s

  9. Nevin has at least one .400/.590 July, every year? One July like that is about all you can have, I guess.

and wouldn’t it be nice to have a .400/.590 first baseman all year?

  10. What were Ready’s health problems?

And was any of that Fick’s fault????

  11. arright my comment was kinda silly

  12. How do you let two guys score on a wild pitch? Colossal mental breakdown there.

  13. How can we lead 3-0 EVERY GODDAMNED DAY AND NEVER HAVE A SAFE LEAD!?!?!?!?

  14. wait a minute…what happened to the K? Isn’t there a rule where the batter who K’d can’t advance on the wild pitch when there is a runner at first? or when the bases are loaded? something like that?

  15. seanez pitches to saenz

  16. Eric, all that death-metal band drug use has melted your mind.

  17. If we don’t win this game… well, I just don’t know what drastic measures I might take.

  18. D-Backs got an ass-whuppin’ from the Giants tonight.
    And Sweeney’s aboard…

  19. hah…I don’t even smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol.

  20. UNBLOWABLE UNBLOWABLE! please!

  21. oooh…nice piece of hitting by Mac

  22. I figured as much, Eric. I only drink, but I do it like I mean it.
And Fat Paul has another hit.

  23. Some really fine work from the catchers tonight. What the heck was that?

  24. Bases loaded, nobody out. Fick first pitch swinging pops up to second. Burroughs up. We’re not going to score, are we?

  25. 3-0 to Sean. Gotta take two pitches.

  26. I’m like begging for a ball.

  27. Full count. C’mon, no DP. Let X bat.

  28. Thank God he missed badly with that pitch. Burroughs walks to drive in the run. Go Nady.

  29. I think we’re approaching unblowability status.

  30. unblowable: n. that which cannot be blown. sl:in the bag.
The Padres had such a huge lead, it was practically unblowable.

  31. After 8-1/2, a five-run lead. Am I wrong to feel confident????

I was on the phone with my wife for Nady’s AB. What did he do?

  32. Reyes in. Unblowability levels reduced significantly.

  33. Nady singled sharply up the middle

  34. If Richard’s watching, the presence of Reyes HAS to make him nervous.
And a hit by the leadoff man, just to make things fun.
DP by Greene and DJ, to reduce the threat.

  35. That was more exciting than it needed to be, but I’ll take it. D’backs are getting blown out by SF.

  36. What does Kevin do to note the last three outs of a game finished by Reyes? Say a short prayer of thanks?

  37. I just tuned in, Brian, and that might not be a bad idea. I just watched the last three outs at work.

  38. Welcome, Kevin. And goodnight.
    Enjoyed this one, boys…

  39. Bochy quote from official site:

“Obviously, we’ll have to get creative to get him more at-bats. Infield, outfield, we’ll be giving guys days off. When we get to the so-called ‘dog days,’ with Nady you can have a [six-man] rotation in the outfield and at first base and third base. They all play five or six days a week.”

This is what I wanted all year.

  40. This one was fun, but not without its moments of despair. De ja vu, all over again… dodgers come back to score 3(or should I say we gave them 3) and scare the heck out of me. I am thinking to myself, here we go again… But the boys picked me up by scoring some more(something they havent been doing) and give me a satisfied happy face. I needed a win tonight for an attitude adjustment.

    see yall tomorrow.
