OT … Brocail with a save today for the ’stros …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=280416122
… bully for him!
April 16, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Apparently Germano’s not going to get anything not right down the middle called a strike, because Spilborghs should have been rung up on three of those “balls”.
April 16, 2008 at 7:09 pm
When the Pads came on the air, Vaskergian (sp?) said “You are looking live at..” while the camera panned around a full stadium. Then, when they showed him and Mudd in the press box, the background showed an almost empty stadium…
So, what gives? Careful camera angles? Just lying?
April 16, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Ok that walk was all on Germano.
April 16, 2008 at 7:16 pm
I think Edmonds made the right call there.
April 16, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Too many walks.
April 16, 2008 at 7:20 pm
After top of 1st …
Pitches-strikes - J Germano 27-14.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Germano 2-1.
Batters faced - J Germano 6.
… I saw Germano went up 0-2 on the leadoff hitter, then walked him … bleh.
April 16, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Huber should be starting tonight against the lefty, with either Giles or Edmonds on the bench. Either one works. They’re both old. They both need frequent days off. It’s not that hard to get Huber in there.
April 16, 2008 at 7:23 pm
#8@Ben B.: Forgot the most relevant fact in there, which is they both suck against lefties.
April 16, 2008 at 7:24 pm
I really hope that 0-2 eventual walk did not set the tone for tonight. Let’s see if Germano can make some adjustments quickly.
April 16, 2008 at 7:37 pm
After top of 2nd …
Pitches-strikes - M Redman 9-5; J Germano 41-24.
Ground balls-fly balls - M Redman 2-1; J Germano 3-3.
Batters faced - M Redman 3; J Germano 11.
… so that was a 14-pitch inning for Germano …
April 16, 2008 at 7:38 pm
#8@Ben B.: Agree 100%! That was going to be my question #3 for Bud if he’d answer’d my first 2 questions during his 1/2-hour chat @ mlb.com … but he duck’d ‘em both …
April 16, 2008 at 7:42 pm
I say Germano’s actually looked good thus far, despite the two runs allowed. The two walks were him getting badly squeezed by the umpire and him pitching around Matt Holliday. Only one of the balls put in play has been hit well - the triple to Spilborghs.
April 16, 2008 at 7:44 pm
#11@LynchMob:
I love & appreciate the pitch stat updates! I know that can’t be fun to try to put together each half-inning but it is really helpful. Thanks!
April 16, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Wow. That was a pretty obvious balk. There’s no way he stepped toward first making that pick off move.
April 16, 2008 at 7:47 pm
OT … in today’s comments about yesterday’s minor league games, GY and Phantom reported about the 33 mph winds at the Storm game … and that the Lancaster game was canceled because of even higher winds … which got mentioned at BA today (steady 40 mph, gusts to 50 mph) …
http://www.baseballamerica.com.....cts/?p=904
… which includes an old video of Dirk Hayhurst from last year … fun.
April 16, 2008 at 7:49 pm
After top of 3rd …
Pitches-strikes - M Redman 19-13; J Germano 49-31.
Ground balls-fly balls - M Redman 2-3; J Germano 5-4.
Batters faced - M Redman 6; J Germano 15.
… so a nice 8-pitch inning for Justin.
Note to Padres … try to see a few more pitches from Redman!
April 16, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Good shot OG!!!!!
April 16, 2008 at 7:51 pm
#18@Turbine Dude: Not bad for a guy who can’t hit left-handed pitching.
April 16, 2008 at 7:52 pm
#19@Richard: Um, yes. Clearly it was Edmonds that we should have rested tonight against the lefty.
April 16, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Brian Giles has suddenly become Rod Carew. Has this guy re-invented himself or what ?
April 16, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Nice “Serrano” reference from Mud towards Glenn Allen Hill’s flashback home run clip.
April 16, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Redman bunted into DP? Someone tell me what they saw!
April 16, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Thru top of 4th …
Pitches-strikes - M Redman 34-23; J Germano 60-40.
Ground balls-fly balls - M Redman 4-4; J Germano 8-4.
Batters faced - M Redman 11; J Germano 19.
… after a 27-pitch 1st inning, Justin is now down to a 15-pitch/inning pace … but that 4th was dicey …
April 16, 2008 at 8:01 pm
#23: Germano picks it up and rifles it to Kouz who in turn burns it to Adrian.
April 16, 2008 at 8:01 pm
1-5-3 DP woke me up!
April 16, 2008 at 8:02 pm
#23@LynchMob:
Germano fields the bunt to the left of the mound, quickly fires to third base and Kouzmanoff fires a dart to first to get slow footed pitcher Redman by three steps.
April 16, 2008 at 8:03 pm
25/27 … thanks … sounds nifty!
Now let’s see the batters do their job!
April 16, 2008 at 8:09 pm
#28: Yeah, it was ’swell,’ and actually kinda ‘neato.’
April 16, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Nice 5th for Justin. They just need to get the RBIs now.
April 16, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Yet another nice inning in the top of the 5th for Germano …
Pitches-strikes - M Redman 50-31; J Germano 67-44.
Ground balls-fly balls - M Redman 4-6; J Germano 9-6.
Batters faced - M Redman 15; J Germano 22.
… getting the 2/3/4 hitters out on 7 pitches!
April 16, 2008 at 8:14 pm
“And they give you cash, which is just as good as money.” -My favorite Yogi-ism of all time!
April 16, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Hairston pulling off the ball a bit now. Needs to go the other way more….
April 16, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Has Hairston every gone the other way?
April 16, 2008 at 8:19 pm
OG goes yard to center right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 16, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Sorry double. I got excited too soon.
April 16, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Triple
April 16, 2008 at 8:21 pm
#34@Field39: He actually did for his hit in his first at bat. It might have been more a case of him getting jammed and flaring it out that way instead of intentional though.
April 16, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Looks like OG found his missing PED ;-P
April 16, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I really thought that ball was gone.
April 16, 2008 at 8:21 pm
35 … “yard” = triple? Not in my book …
April 16, 2008 at 8:22 pm
It looks like OG is extending his arms more than I remember him doing for 2 years.
On TV, OG looked like he had a severe hitch when he was hitting at home last year.
April 16, 2008 at 8:23 pm
40 … OK, I like the enthusiasm
And I like that OG is ON FIRE!
April 16, 2008 at 8:24 pm
To me, Hairston always looks like he is trying to pull the ball.
how does the reply feature work?
April 16, 2008 at 8:25 pm
My one contribution for the night….what the hell is Agon swinging at? Those pitches seem to be at his belt buckle on GameDay. What happened to not getting yourself out, Hombre?
April 16, 2008 at 8:26 pm
#43: I feel like an owl. My TV and monitor are 180 deg apart and I’m trying to follow both at the same time. LOL.
April 16, 2008 at 8:26 pm
44 … click on the “arrow” icon next to the timestamp on the comment you want to reply to … this will put the comment# and the commenters name (as a link) in your comment box … you can do this for multiple replies …
my question is how do we get an avitar to show up? i’ve seen GY and one other commenter get an avitar to show up … but i’ve not seen info on how to do that …
April 16, 2008 at 8:27 pm
That may be the easiest play Helton makes all year.
But, as someone who has been very disappointed with OG at the start of this year, I have to admit that it looks like OG is finally comfortable or taking a different approach at the plate or … but it is the best his hitting has looked at Petco in a long time.
April 16, 2008 at 8:27 pm
#45@Tom Waits: That last AB was just ugly.
April 16, 2008 at 8:28 pm
#45@Tom Waits: That did have the look & feel of a failed key at-bat … Redman had to be on the ropes … he threw 23 pitches that inning …
April 16, 2008 at 8:29 pm
#48@kelly in sd: It’s funny what being healthy will do.
April 16, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Ouch. Just bad luck there.
April 16, 2008 at 8:31 pm
52 … what happened?
April 16, 2008 at 8:32 pm
#52@Ben B.: For those not watching live, it was a little bloop flare that landed right on the line and then squirted underneath the bullpen bench, so that Giles had to reach through the bench to grab it.
April 16, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Did OG’s throw skip off the foul line and cause Bard to miss the play?
April 16, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Thru top of 6th …
Pitches-strikes - M Redman 73-42; J Germano 79-51.
Ground balls-fly balls - M Redman 6-7; J Germano 10-8.
Batters faced - M Redman 21; J Germano 27.
… not a bad inning for Germano … will be interesting to see if he bats this inning if they get that far (he’s due up 6th) …
April 16, 2008 at 8:35 pm
#55@kelly in sd: Even if Bard had caught it, he would have to be a circus freak to twist around to make a tag. If OG didn’t have to rummage throught the bull pen trash, he would have made an earlier throw.
April 16, 2008 at 8:39 pm
As the play was developing, I didn’t think the play at the plate would be close. But OG made a great throw after picking the ball between the seat and the back of the bench. Then, Bard looked set up, but the ball changed direction so he had to make a sprawling grab up the third base line for it.
And in the meantime, Herges makes quick work of the Pads.
April 16, 2008 at 8:42 pm
That was a Maddux-esque inning.
April 16, 2008 at 8:42 pm
OT … Penny’s spinin’ a gem tonight (makes me look forward to Jake tomorrow
) … and the Dogs have Nomar back in the lineup …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=280416119
… up 6-0 thru 5 … bleh …
April 16, 2008 at 8:43 pm
nice 4-pitch inning!
April 16, 2008 at 8:43 pm
What the hell is Mark Grant talking about? If Adrian hadn’t caught that, it would have been an error on him, not Kouz. Kouz threw it right where he should have, not over Adrian’s head. (I feel like the Aflac duck here).
April 16, 2008 at 8:44 pm
#59@kelly in sd: Indeed!
Pitches-strikes - M Redman 73-42; M Herges 9-7; J Germano 83-54.
Ground balls-fly balls - M Redman 6-7; M Herges 1-1; J Germano 11-10.
Batters faced - M Redman 21; M Herges 3; J Germano 30.
… that’s thru top of 7th … I gotta think Germano will get PH’d for … due up 3rd …
April 16, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Through top of 7th, Germano is at 83 pitches, 54 strikes, 11 groundouts, 10 flyouts, no strikeouts.
April 16, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Oops, sorry LynchMob
April 16, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Germano really did a great job in innings 2-7. 56 pitches in 6 innings.
April 16, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Top of the 14th in Toronto, and who comes in as the Jays’ 9th pitcher of the game… AJ Burnett.
April 16, 2008 at 8:48 pm
#60@LynchMob: It’s against the Pirates. Doesn’t count.
April 16, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Every time I see Tony Clark, I think back to having Honors math with him at Valhalla High. Still seems strange to see him in the Majors
April 16, 2008 at 8:53 pm
64/65 … no prob!
67 … and he gives up a run on a wild pitch … bummer, dude!
Tony Clark draws a PH walk … getting OG up … c’mon, OG!
April 16, 2008 at 8:55 pm
It was strange to read about him in Baseball America as he was being scouted and then drafted by the Tigers. He’d transferred to Christian for his senior year, but Valhalla didn’t produce a lot great baseball players.
April 16, 2008 at 8:58 pm
#71@kelly in sd: What I think is funny is that his friends made him bat left in order to play with them.
April 16, 2008 at 8:58 pm
A little disappointed in OG swinging first ball against a new reliever..
April 16, 2008 at 9:01 pm
#34@Field39: Not much at all , I agree. He will hopefully make an adjustment.
April 16, 2008 at 9:01 pm
#73@Mark O: That sounds like something Barrack Obama would say, given what OG has produced last night and tonight so far.
April 16, 2008 at 9:02 pm
#75@Turbine Dude: True enough…i realize it was a tad nitpicky..
April 16, 2008 at 9:11 pm
#76@Mark O: GY set a nitpicky tone for us today … it’s all good!
Nice inning by Cla … now let’s get him a W!
April 16, 2008 at 9:17 pm
#67@dprat: and AJ gives up two runs in the 14th
April 16, 2008 at 9:17 pm
OT: Just wondering why GY doesn’t visit his own IGD very often anymore.
April 16, 2008 at 9:21 pm
OK, that was not good. Grrrrr………
April 16, 2008 at 9:22 pm
The wheels have come off of this one. Some good things though: Giles hitting, the nice 1-5-3 double play, and Germano’s efficiency.
See y’all tomorrow for Peavy.
April 16, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Bleh … time for a look-in on the Storm game …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_hdmafa_1
… 3-3 after 6 …
April 16, 2008 at 9:29 pm
#79@Turbine Dude: Combination of factors, most of which fall under the category “lack of time.” Thanks for checking, though.
April 16, 2008 at 9:29 pm
The wheels didn’t just come off of this, they rolled in front of the car and caused it to hit a short bus full of special ed kids.
April 16, 2008 at 9:31 pm
#83@Geoff Young: Thanks Geoff. How are our Storm boys doing tonight? Figure you were at the game.
April 16, 2008 at 9:40 pm
That may be the end of the Glendon Rusch experiment
Question would they release him or AAA him ?
When will Hampson be ready ?
April 16, 2008 at 9:43 pm
#34@Field39:
9th inning - S. Hairston grounded out to second
April 16, 2008 at 9:46 pm
#85@Turbine Dude: No game for me tonight, I’m afraid.
#86@JP: When will anyone be ready?
April 16, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Nick Hundley may be the big diamond out of all the group –not hype for this guy compared to Antonelli or Headley but he is swinging a hot bat at AAA with power and when you see him play he definitely looks like a major league catcher.
April 16, 2008 at 9:50 pm
88 … perhaps Estes is ready for some work out of the Padre ‘pen?
April 16, 2008 at 9:51 pm
89 … how/when have you seen him play? Are you near Portland?
April 16, 2008 at 9:53 pm
I would get Colt Morton the hell out of here so that he can get some much needed at bats (he isn’t ready for mlb pitching yet) and bring Nick Hundley in here to start every 4th day. ‘Morton just needs reps right now–he didn’t have a full season last year and if I am not mistaken, has lost a lot of at bats in past years to injury. Meanwhile, Hundley may be ready now to contribute.
The Padres need another 10-12 year veteran scrub journeyman catcher in here to tie things down in case AAA guys (Morton,Hundley,Carlin) unravel.
April 16, 2008 at 9:54 pm
#92@JP: Rob Bowen, perhaps, for example?
April 16, 2008 at 10:00 pm
A note at this UT article …
http://www3.signonsandiego.com.....n-america/
… says this …
Matt Latos struck out nine in three innings in extended spring training. He clocked at 93-95 mph.
… so that’s some good news.
April 16, 2008 at 10:00 pm
If Bard starts practically every night then I would rather have Luke Carlin up here or Damien Miller acquired for duty then to have Colt Morton or Nick Hundley serve as Bard’s “Bill Plummer”.
April 16, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Cut Rusch and bring in Mike Piazza ?
April 16, 2008 at 10:05 pm
#96@JP: Bud loves his 12 man staff.
April 16, 2008 at 10:07 pm
94 … and I like this note also …
Pitching coach Darren Balsley said Chris Young, undone by a delivery flaw Saturday, “worked things out in the bullpen” Monday.
April 16, 2008 at 10:45 pm
#47@LynchMob: You’ll need to sign up at gravatar.com. It’s free. Took me, like, 2 minutes at most.
#95@JP: Why Carlin? There isn’t much in his track record that suggests a big-league future.
April 16, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Was at the game tonight. Agon looked absolutely horrible at the plate. Not one good swing at all. With Francis going tomorrow night and Jake on the hill, maybe it’s time for Clark to start one and give Hombre a night off. Just a thought.
April 16, 2008 at 11:02 pm
#8 — Yes, Rusch must go. All he did tonight was serve up meatballs.
April 17, 2008 at 12:45 am
#34@Field39: For future reference:
http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/indiv.....statType=1
April 17, 2008 at 6:19 am
#99@Geoff Young:Though a definite non prospect, Carlin would not embarrass himself getting a spot start every two weeks or so at the major league level. He is a good defensive catcher as well. My point is, why have Colt Morton or Nick Hundley here in San Diego simply to sit and not play….Carlin might be a better 1 month stop gap…
April 17, 2008 at 6:43 am
#103@JP: He might be, but then again he might not be. I’ll defer to the Padres’ judgment on this one.
April 17, 2008 at 6:45 am
#103@JP: If Morton is a good defender and a better hitter than Carlin, and the team sees him as a future backup anyway, I’d rather have the better player on the major league club. Baseball being what it is, Morton could go 0-12 the next four weeks while Carlin might run into 3 doubles and a HR, but I’m not all that fussed about 26 year old Colt missing reps.
April 17, 2008 at 7:47 am
#105@Tom Waits: Understood. Wonder what the danger will be of Bard wearing down. With Barrett down, Bard seems to be getting every start. I’d imagine that Colt Morton will be getting a start here shortly.
Is the 6′5 Morton known as a good defensive catcher ? If not, how much value can he bring as an offensive player at
