Padres Release Edmonds, Shuffle Deck Chairs

So much for Jim Edmonds. Ducksnorts readers projected him to hit .255/.338/.418, with the most pessimistic of us pegging his OPS at a limp 645. Sadly, the former All-Star didn't even come close to those meager numbers, finishing his Padres career at .178/.265/.233 in 103 plate appearances and, more importantly, looking lost in center field. Edmonds has been released, and his spot on the roster taken by Jody Gerut, who presumably will see most of the action in center field. This is a gutsy move considering that Gerut has 26 big-league games under his belt ...

Padres Farm Report (8 Apr 08)

Tuesday, April 8, 2008
by Geoff Young
Tom Krasovic at the U-T reports that Michael Barrett has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (h/t Baseball in Fort Wayne) due to a "strained throwing elbow" suffered during Monday afternoon's 8-4 win over the Giants. Much is unknown at this point, but it doesn't sound good. Meanwhile, Colt Morton will come up from Double-A San Antonio to replace Barrett on the big-league roster. Josh Bard is expected to see most of the playing time at catcher in Barrett's absence. Triple-A -- Portland 9, Sacramento 1 Matt Antonelli: 0-for-3, 2 BB Craig Stansberry (3B): 2-for-4, 2 2B, BB Chase Headley (LF): ...

OBG08: Wolf, Prior, and Others

OBG08: Le Menu Josh Bard/Michael Barrett Adrian Gonzalez Tadahito Iguchi Kevin Kouzmanoff Khalil Greene Scott Hairston Chase Headley Jim Edmonds Brian Giles Jake Peavy Chris Young Greg Maddux As a reminder, we're looking for your individual best guess on how these players will perform in 2008. Attempting to compensate for other guesses that you don't agree with defeats the purpose of the exercise. Okay, enough with the lecture. Now we get to the scary part of the rotation. I've got projections here for Randy Wolf, Mark Prior, and Clay Hensley. If you want to throw something out there for, say, Shawn Estes, Justin Germano, Enrique Gonzalez, or Glendon Rusch, go right ahead. Eric Nolte? Sure, why not. Randy Wolf Wolf is basically a ...

OBG08: Jim Edmonds

OBG08: Le Menu Josh Bard/Michael Barrett Adrian Gonzalez Tadahito Iguchi Kevin Kouzmanoff Khalil Greene Scott Hairston Chase Headley Before we get to Jim Edmonds, here's a quick recap of where things stand to date. Eventually I'll post a comprehensive list of our projections and upload a spreadsheet so everyone can ridicule us or whatever, but for now, if you haven't gotten your guesses in, please go to the appropriate entry and do so. Or not. Your call. Anywho, on to Edmonds. I really do not have a good feel for what he's capable of at this stage in his career. He's 38 years old and he barely cracked 400 plate appearances each of the past two seasons. His offensive skills appear to be in precipitous decline ...

Our Best Guesses for 2008: Josh Bard and Michael Barrett

Thursday, January 24, 2008
by Geoff Young
Here's the deal: You and I are going to project performance for the 2008 Padres. Just submit your projected stat line, offer supporting comments, and enjoy the ensuing wackiness. We'll lead off with the catchers, Josh Bard and Michael Barrett. Josh Bard Bard didn't duplicate his freakishly good 2006 season but still performed well for the Padres and is in his prime. Last year's production seems reasonable, so I'll go with 400 PA, .280/.352/.409. I'll put the over/under on his throwing out baserunners at 10%. Michael Barrett Barrett ...

Tom Krasovic offers his thoughts on Edmonds as well (San Diego Union-Tribune). Joe P. Sheehan examines similar pitchers by pitch type (Baseball Analysts, hat tip Friar Forecast).
