Padres (21-34) @ Giants (23-31) Greg Maddux vs Matt Cain 7:15 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 185 MLB, B-R The Padres have moved into fourth place in the NL West, a half game ahead of the defending league champion Colorado Rockies. The Diamondbacks are the only team in the division with a record better than .500, and they're 10-16 this month. Despite the Pads' extreme ineptitude early on, they're still not out of this race. They need to start playing better, of course, but things could be worse. Be excellent to one another. Go Padres!

Padres (9-13) vs Giants (9-13) Chris Young vs Tim Lincecum 7:05 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 189 MLB, B-R With the usual small-sample caveats, I've noticed a few trouble spots in the early going. We'll focus on one of those today. For all the talk about lack of timely hitting, the club is batting an almost bearable .246/.294/.383 with RISP. If you really want to see something ugly, check out how Padres hitters do when leading off an inning:  PABAOBPSLG Statistics are courtesy of Baseball-Reference and are through games of April 23, 2008....

Padres (9-12) @ Giants (8-13) Greg Maddux vs Matt Cain 7:05 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 189 MLB, B-R In baseball, as in life, it's wise to abandon your long-term plans at the first sign of trouble. Good luck with that. Maddux goes for career win #350.

I Brake for Money

Posting will be light this week, as I've got to overhaul a client web site. It's a small site, but they need a quick turnaround. More importantly, the gig pays actual money (for the actual mortgage on my actual house), which comes in handy when your primary source of income is a book that nobody buys. The farm reports and IGDs will run every day, but we'll be doing open threads most of the rest of the time. I'll try to come up with halfway decent prompts that you can discuss or ignore. Meanwhile, I've got some other cool stuff going on behind the scenes. I can't say anything about those just yet, but expect to hear more in the coming weeks. You'll know when they ...

Series Preview: Rox Girl Talks Rockies

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

The Padres and Rockies hook up for the first time since that fateful Game 163 in Denver last October. I recently had a chance to chat with Rox Girl of the excellent Rockies blog Purple Row about her expectations for the 2008 season, the challenges of marketing a team that plays half its games west of Connecticut, and more. Ducksnorts: Coming off their first World Series appearance, I'd imagine the Rockies are a hot item in town right about now. How optimistic are fans that this team can return to the playoffs in a very competitive NL West? How do you see this club doing in '08? Rox Girl: The mood around Lodo is very optimistic. Well, at least it was before we got pummeled ...

Padres (5-4) vs Giants (2-6) Justin Germano vs Jonathan Sanchez 7:15 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 189 MLB, B-R I was so busy whining about sloppy baserunning and the 12-man pitching staff this morning that I forgot to mention Adrian Gonzalez's spectacular 3-5 double play in Tuesday's contest. It was a thing of beauty. You know what else is a thing of beauty? A win. How 'bout we get one of those tonight...
