Billingsley has faced the Padres 11 times in his career and worked 44 innings, more than against any other team. He’s posted a 2.05 ERA and fanned 53 batters. As a team the Pads are hitting .224/.290/.279 against the 23-year-old right-hander.

How irritating…

  1. Jack-anulty in the lineup again I see.

  2. Alright EGone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I wonder if the fact that there are tumbleweeds rolling by in here has anything to do with last nights game? Let’s start another 5 game streak!

Of course Edgar should have taken that double play himself….JUST MADE UP FOR IT! HR!

  4. Looking at the box score for the top of the 1st … wondering why Pierre didn’t steal second base tonight?

  5. Geoff:
You are probably not going to be on here tonight but I was wondering if your in-laws get into the game when they come? Even if I wasn’t a baseball fan, I tend to think your enthusiasm would draw me in.

  6. Latos pitched to 6 batters tonight (recently off DL) … K’d 3 of them …

  7. The Dodgers are starting Angel Berroa at SS? That’s ugly. At least the Padres don’t know if a few of their players (P-Mac, E-Gon) can hit in the majors, the Dodgers already know that Berroa can’t.

  8. Chase at 3B tonight … error in 1st inning led to a run … Myrow got run back with HR in top of 2nd … 1-1 game in top of 2nd, Portland @ Las Vegas …

  9. On the beach!!!!

  10. Wow!!!!!!!!!

  11. Was that Greene’s first trip to the beach?

  12. OT … E. Gonzalez is pitching for the D-backs in bottom of 12th vs Mets …

  13. OT … Branyan and Cameron hit back-to-back HR for Brewers tonight …

  14. After top of 3rd …

    Pitches-strikes – C Billingsley 27-16; R Wolf 52-33.

    Ground balls-fly balls – C Billingsley 3-2; R Wolf 5-1.

    Batters faced – C Billingsley 8; R Wolf 12.

    … Randy being randy!

  15. #13@LynchMob:
Do you know if Cameron is back to starting? I know Yost was going to bench him for a bit and Cammy wasn’t too happy.

  16. Nobody around for a game that they actually look good in. Billingsley has been dominate against the Padres in his career so far, only one other game where he gave up 3 runs (in one inning Sept 16, 2006 his rookie year).

  17. #11@Field39: I think it was because most of his hits are pulled towards left.

  18. Pulled my head out of the manuscript it’s buried in to check out Gameday and wow… It’s long ball and defense night. When did the Pads turn into the 1970′s Oakland Raiders?

  19. Did anyone else notice the scoreboard just now at the bottom of the screen on 4SD? They listed a final of 3-0 in the DBacks/Mets game. I’m watching it on MLB.TV and it’s tied up 3-3 in the bottom of the 13th. (?)

  20. #20@Turbine Dude: Check that. Mets just won 5-3.

  21. #8@LynchMob: Antonelli with an RBI single in his first AB tonight for Portland … Beavers now up 4-1 in 3rd … Myrow with his 2nd HR of the evening for the other 2 Beaver runs …

  22. Walk off homer for Carlos Beltran … Mets win it 5-3.

  23. #7@Schlom: C’mon Schlom – What major league team doesn’t start a marginal veteran here and there ? After all, it’s a 162 game season. Go back to the 1975 -1976 Cincinnati Reds, did not Merv Rettenmund or Bill Plummer get a start or two.

  24. #7@Schlom: Last week you were ragging on the SF Giants for starting some young “non-prospects” –

    You’re contradicting yourself.

  25. OT: I still think Joe Torre looks out of place in a Dodger uni.

  26. Wolf is throwing some wicked nasty stuff.

  27. Thru 6 …

    Pitches-strikes – C Billingsley 86-55; R Wolf 86-57.

    Ground balls-fly balls – C Billingsley 9-6; R Wolf 8-3.

    Batters faced – C Billingsley 24; R Wolf 23.

… yet another very good effort from the Padre SP …

  28. #3@Jeremy: Personally I was staying away because of the annoying negativity I was reading here earlier.

#7@Schlom: I think it’s pretty clear to everyone that McAnulty can hit in the Majors at this point.

#27@Turbine Dude: That he is. Wolf is fun to watch.

  29. KG just caught a break with that bounce!!!!

  30. Time to collect on Dewitt’s gift.

  31. Jody collects….

  32. Kent flies out.

    Death.

  33. Kemp flies out.

    Taxes.

  34. Nice play by Kouzmanoff.

    Hoffman.

  35. Whew. I can breathe again.

  36. #29@Richard Wade:
Missed the negativity. Happy about that too.

OT: It is really killing me that Peavy’s return is on a no tv day. That hurts. Really hurts :(

  37. #37@Jeremy: I’m really bummed about that. I was going to go to that game, but I have a damned appointment in the middle of it.

  38. Hoffman has 15 saves in 18 chances — .833 percentage.

  39. Diamondbacks lost. Giants lost.

The Padres are a half-game back of the Giants and 6.5 out of first place with 95 games to play.

Even the Rockies are just 8.5 games back.

  40. I really hope Edgar gets that homer ball.

  41. This game was 2 hours, 7 minutes. I spent the first 1:45 playing pool.

  42. #40@Kevin:
Unfortunately, Wasn’t that about where we were a few days ago? Everyone refused to lose very much during our streak. We need another!

  43. #43@Jeremy: Well, the Giants swept the Nationals in a four-game series. They don’t get to play them all the time.

  44. Very nice win tonight. Textbook, really. A few random points I thought of during the game:

People criticize McAnulty, but he is really having a fine year. With his double tonight he’s up to .234/.363/.396, which is well above league average in Petco.

It’s nice to see Bell get ground ball outs like he did tonight. That was one of the things missing at the start of the season when he struggled, but he’s done a better job with that recently. His fastball is back above 95 consistently now.

Hoffman’s opponents’ OPS is down to .677, even with an above average .328 BABIP. His ERA is still up there at 4.50, but that .677 figure is very good. Basically his opponents are hitting like Emil Brown is this year.

  45. #41@Turbine Dude: I think they mentioned on the tv broadcast that the ball had been secured for Edgar.

    #45@Ben B.: Good points, Ben.

  46. #45@Ben B.: Fine year for PMAC ? Let’s not get carried away, but he seems to definitely be turning the corner and proving himself, after 150 or so mlb plate appearances to be worth more of a look.

  47. #29@Richard Wade:It appears that PMAC can hit major league pitching, yes, but the question now seems, is he an everyday player ? I wonder if he can play the corners in the infield without totally embarrassing himself ? How did he look at third base last year ?

  48. Darn. We draw CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee in the next road series.

  49. Darkest before the dawn? It is brightest before the sunset? This team is pulling me back into hoping for this season. At one point I was thinking we were a 2011 or 2012 team. That’s one example of why I don’t work in the FO.

Clearly about to jinx the team, but just imagine Peavy back, Wolf keeps on his roll, Maddux keeps doing his thing, Banks keeps throwing his 27 pitch arsenal for strikes, CY returns and re-finds prior year form, and Estes keeps showing he is indeed not toast… makes me weepy thinking about it.

Who has a higher OPS? Gerut or KK? Gerut…

Fun with numbers, small samples and a grudge:

Pads with Edmonds playing: 8-18 (.308)
    All other games: 21-20 (.512)
