  1. #47@JP: Most teams are, if you take away 2 starters with injuries and rest the others. Take 2 starters out of Arizona’s infield, give Jackson a day off, and they’re running Burke, Hammock, and Augie Ojeda out there. Hammock’s 84 is the best career OPS of the trio.

  2. Let’s work the count some in the 5th. Banks saw more pitches than Hairston and Egon combined in the 4th. Misch should be around 90 pitches now and putting Bochy in a tough spot, let him suffer or drain the bullpen more for tomorrow’s game.

#48@Stephen: Agree. So far his peripherals look okay, too. Cut down on the walks, but that hasn’t been a problem for him in the past.

#49@Schlom: Winn or Rowand would start for us, talent, not contracts.

  3. #53@Tom Waits: I was thinking the same thing. We need more runs off of Misch and force Bochy’s hand! And then on to tomorrow and a sweep.

Gotta run for awhile. Go Padres !!

  4. #39@Turbine Dude: Sweet!! Thanks for the help. Now y’all can curse my image, not just my idiotic commentary. Like you said, it only took 3 innings/30 min.

  5. #55@130tom330: great, now get off the phone !

  6. #53@Tom Waits: Forgot about Winn as I was comparing straight across positions and he’s not as good as Giles. However, he wouldn’t start ahead of Headley when he comes up. Add in the fact that he’s owed $8.25m for 2009 and a limited no-trade clause I don’t think he has too much value.

  7. #56@JP: Multi-tasking, trying to call up Headley.

  8. Josh Banks ??

  9. I wonder what AGon’s avg is whenever EGon is on base? Maybe have EGon as a pinch runner everytime his brother is at bat!

  10. Banks, 7 innings, 70 pitches, 47 strikes, 23 balls, 3 hits, 4 Ks, no walks, 9 GO, 8 FO, and 3 singles.

  11. 8 innings, 83 pitches, 56 strikes, 27 balls, 4 hits, 5 Ks, no walks, 9 GO, 10 FO

  12. #48@Stephen:

Now that’s just rude, which is to say nothing of your post.

  13. Is this better? C’mon Josh, let’s see that shutout!

  14. 2 outs to go

  15. Why’d the Blue Jays get rid of this guy? He’s got some outstanding stuff

  16. one more out

  17. Dammit, Aaron Rowand spoils it.

  18. #55@130tom330: Glad to help.

I’m really happy we are just about to win this game.

I’m also going to send some very nast e-mails to MLB and Fox for screwing us. I don’t understand how Fox stands to profit by not letting us watch the game.

  19. game over baby!!! Padres have won 2 series in a row, three games in a row, that’s a winning streak baby!!!

  20. Complete game for Banks! Well done today. Gonna need a ton of starting pitching the next few weeks, good to have confidence in a new arm. Great game today, Go Pads. Three in a row, for the 1st time this season, ’bout time boys! How ’bout a sweep to turn it around…

  21. We win! Woohoo. We didn’t get to see it, but it happened. Sorry GY, but FUCK Fox!

  22. The Paaaaddddrrrreeeessss win. One more and we’re in 3rd. This division is bad.

  23. #72@Turbine Dude: Dude, take a look at the comments policy and chill on the language.

  24. Great job by Banks. Too bad he couldn’t get the shutout, but what a great accomplishment to get a complete game W!

  25. #74@Pat: Sorry Pat. I wish I could take that post back. But, I am stewing over this issue. I very rarely lose my temper. This has steam pouring out of my ears like a WB cartoon caractor.

  26. Yet another quality start for a Padres starter.

  27. #3@JP: You asked “Is Rusch better than Estes?” … what would make you ask that question? The Padres released Rusch and kept Estes … and based on what I saw of both of them, and based on what I heard from friends who saw Rusch more than I did, it doesn’t seem close … ie. Estes seems right now (well, before the broken thumb) to be much, much better than Rusch … not that that makes Estes very good … more an indicator of how bad Rusch is at this time …

  28. Jim Callis @ BA said this in a chat today …

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/chat/2008/266221.html

Q: Marco from San Diego asks:
Jim, The Padres are slugging it out for last place right now, do you think they should continue to do so, because I hear this local kid, Stephen Strasburg, is something really special?

A: Jim Callis: He is something special, a San Diego State sophomore righty who has blown away hitters all year. But it’s hard to tank for four months, and even so, it might be hard to keep the No. 1 pick from the Royals.

… which strikes me as quite practical. In other words, our recent comments about it being better to win 65 and get the first pick rather than 75 and gets a lower pic were just theoretical / hypothetical chatter … as it seems clear to me that the Giants also have a lock on a lower place in the standings than the Padres …

  29. I forgot that today’s was John Sickels’ mock draft …

    http://www.minorleagueball.com/

    23) San Diego: Jake Odorizzi, RHP, Illinois HS
    42) Padres: Tyler Ladendorf, SS, Howard TX JC

    … fyi.

  30. #80@LynchMob: Here’s a few comments, questions, and answers from the Mock Draft Post-Mortem thread …

    Overall
looks interesting … although you went heavy on arms, and with their system as it is, I’m curious if there were any OF’s you considered, along with middle infielders?

    I have to agree
what the Padres need is hitting, and lots of it.

To me, it was the wrong approach.

    that’s fine
But I’m a firm believer in taking the best player available.

    re:
I considered Collier at 23, but I like Odorizzi too much to pass on him. Collier would have been the pick if he was off the board. I also love Brett Lawrie, but he was gone.

I was looking at David Cooper in the supplemental round, but he went right in front of me.

Overall though, I think I just liked the arms in this draft a lot more than the bats.

… several of the names now a bit familiar thanks to GY’s reports … I’m still hoping Ike Davis falls to #23 …

  32. #76@Turbine Dude: Cool, man; I know I’ve wanted to take some posts back before, too.

  33. OT … you can follow the college regional games at

    http://www.ncaa.com/Sport/ScoreBoard.aspx?sid=700&id=98

USC (called SD St at this web site :-( ) plays Fresno St at 6pm … after beating Cal 5-0 yesterday …

    http://www.ncaa.com/baseball/article.aspx?id=254942

  34. #84@LynchMob: Ah, interesting that now they’ve fixed “SD St” to simply say “San Diego” … bravo …

  35. From Friar John Blog …

Bases-loaded walk and a hit-by-pitch in the 13th inning? Things are starting to fall the Padres’ way. You can read about their victory Friday night at San Francisco on padres.com.

Since a 4-2 loss at home against Colorado on May 9, the Padres have gone 10-10. That not only indicates improvement by a team that suffered a 12-24 start, but it’s also the best record in the National League West in that time.

The division performance since May 9:

    Team W-L
    Padres 10-10
    Giants 9-10
    Dodgers 8-11
    D’backs 7-12
    Rockies 5-14

    :-)

  36. Kouzmanoff in May: 282/325/491
    Adrian in May: 283/347/628

    Giles for the season: 301/406/440

Adrian has played every game. Greene has missed one. Kouzmanoff has missed one. That has to be a concern over the season.

  37. Josh Banks pitched a compelte game, something Peavy didn’t do last season when he won the Cy Young Award.

  38. Peavy turned 27 today.

  39. Looks like the run Banks gave up was unearned. I didn’t notice that before. So his ERA is 0.00.

  40. #78@LynchMob: Schlom had indicated that Estes was the worst starter in all of the majors = and many on this blog had even questioned whether Estes should be in the big leagues at all.

  41. A very nice outing by Banks! Great win to take the series from the Giants. I hope it continues.

  42. #86@LynchMob : It will be quite a test the next two – versus Lincecum & Zambrano – win these two and it could really set them on a roll
