Last night was San Diego’s fifth game of at least 13 innings this season. The Padres are the first team in major league history to play five games of at least 13 innings before the end of May.

The long road back to respectability. The Pads have been getting some good pitching minus two of their best starters in Peavy and Young.

We (I) can rag on a guy like 30 year old journeyman Mike Adams but he looked pretty damn decent last night. Did you see that 12-6 curveball he threw last night to strike out Castillo ?

On the post game show last night, they showed the aftermath of Pmac’s first inning blunder. First Giles followed him down the tunnell, then Maddux went off on him, then he walked away while Bud was trying to talk to him.

Not all that familiar with what’s going on in the Rockies farm system
but heard all off season how far ahead they ahead of the Pads in terms of depth. Don’t they have any other options outside of Glendon Rusch as a starter ?

He forgot how many outs there were. Thought it was 3 outs, hesitated, and a runner on 3rd tagged and scored. PMac threw home but not in time.

#7@JP: Estes broke his thumb when he fell down some stairs. Tough luck. I’m guessing Baek gets his spot in the rotation. He looked really good last night. I had read that he had about five pretty good pitches and he showed at least three of those last night. A fastball clocked about 91 mph, a good changeup, good slider, and I think he threw a split-finger. I might be wrong, though. The slider/split-finger could have been the same pitch but whatever he was throwing had some serious drop to it.

Leitner’s right (not that I enjoy admitting that) “What next?” Estes falls down the dugout stairs! Back to my bad luck/no luck statement last night. 6 of 10, the division struggles, AZ’s Byrns pulls both hamstrings (ouch!), CO looks to get swept by the Cubbies (can’t wait to run into that buzz-saw next week @ PetCo), but it sounds like they’re off to a great start tonite. Picking up right where they left off last night. Lets Go Padres!

As much as I complain about the Padres “Triple A” players being in the starting lineup — at least they aren’t the Giants. Seriously, is this one of the worst infields in major league history? How does Brian Sabean have a job? I’ve never been in baseball management but at least I’m smart enough to know that a player that isn’t good enough to play 2B for the Pirates shouldn’t be my starting 3B. At least Denker, Burriss and Bowker are young but I don’t think any of them are real prospects.

#31@Tom Waits: Greene is an automatic strikeout right now. He brings so much defensively and the Padre margin is so thin that you have to have him out there everyday though.

To his credit, he does not slump in the field. He is truly one of the best shortstops I have ever seen.

I know it’s a very small sample to draw from so far, but how can you not love what Josh Banks has been bringing to this pitching staff? He threw 8 scoreless innings over two days, with 6 in that 18-inning game against Cincy, and now he’s showing how to protect a nice comfy lead. I’m sure he’ll get knocked around one of these days, but for now this kid’s been a sight for sore eyes.

  49. Schlom
    Posted May 31, 2008 at 2:10 pm | Permalink

#47@JP: Well, not really. If Kouz gets injured they’d put Headley in there so they’d have at least one player of promise plus Antonelli, even slumping at Portland, has more potential then the Giants players.

The difference is that the Giants don’t have the injury excuse, just the incompetent GM excuse — which isn’t really an excuse.

The Giants entire roster is almost totally devoid of talent or potential. Molina is the only player that would probably start for the Padres although Rowand is certainly good enough but I wouldn’t take him because of his contract. Lewis might be better then Hairston but probably wouldn’t start ahead of Headley. Obviously Lincecum and Cain are studs and Sanchez isn’t terrible but that’s it. How the Padres are behind them is a mystery to me.

#47@JP: Most teams are, if you take away 2 starters with injuries and rest the others. Take 2 starters out of Arizona’s infield, give Jackson a day off, and they’re running Burke, Hammock, and Augie Ojeda out there. Hammock’s 84 is the best career OPS of the trio.

Let’s work the count some in the 5th. Banks saw more pitches than Hairston and Egon combined in the 4th. Misch should be around 90 pitches now and putting Bochy in a tough spot, let him suffer or drain the bullpen more for tomorrow’s game.

#48@Stephen: Agree. So far his peripherals look okay, too. Cut down on the walks, but that hasn’t been a problem for him in the past.

#49@Schlom: Winn or Rowand would start for us, talent, not contracts.

The Padres released Rusch and kept Estes … and based on what I saw of both of them, and based on what I heard from friends who saw Rusch more than I did, it doesn’t seem close … ie. Estes seems right now (well, before the broken thumb) to be much, much better than Rusch … not that that makes Estes very good … more an indicator of how bad Rusch is at this time …

Jim Callis @ BA said this in a chat today …

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/chat/2008/266221.html

Q: Marco from San Diego asks:
Jim, The Padres are slugging it out for last place right now, do you think they should continue to do so, because I hear this local kid, Stephen Strasburg, is something really special?

A: Jim Callis: He is something special, a San Diego State sophomore righty who has blown away hitters all year. But it’s hard to tank for four months, and even so, it might be hard to keep the No. 1 pick from the Royals.

… which strikes me as quite practical. In other words, our recent comments about it being better to win 65 and get the first pick rather than 75 and gets a lower pic were just theoretical / hypothetical chatter … as it seems clear to me that the Giants also have a lock on a lower place in the standings than the Padres …

I considered Collier at 23, but I like Odorizzi too much to pass on him. Collier would have been the pick if he was off the board. I also love Brett Lawrie, but he was gone.

Overall though, I think I just liked the arms in this draft a lot more than the bats.

#84@LynchMob: Ah, interesting that now they’ve fixed “SD St” to simply say “San Diego” … bravo …

    From Friar John Blog …

Bases-loaded walk and a hit-by-pitch in the 13th inning? Things are starting to fall the Padres’ way. You can read about their victory Friday night at San Francisco on padres.com.

Since a 4-2 loss at home against Colorado on May 9, the Padres have gone 10-10. That not only indicates improvement by a team that suffered a 12-24 start, but it’s also the best record in the National League West in that time.

The division performance since May 9:

    Team W-L
    Padres 10-10
    Giants 9-10
    Dodgers 8-11
    D’backs 7-12
    Rockies 5-14

    Kouzmanoff in May: 282/325/491
    Adrian in May: 283/347/628

    Giles for the season: 301/406/440

Adrian has played every game. Greene has missed one. Kouzmanoff has missed one. That has to be a concern over the season.

Josh Banks pitched a compelte game, something Peavy didn’t do last season when he won the Cy Young Award.

    Peavy turned 27 today.

Looks like the run Banks gave up was unearned. I didn’t notice that before. So his ERA is 0.00.

#78@LynchMob: Schlom had indicated that Estes was the worst starter in all of the majors = and many on this blog had even questioned whether Estes should be in the big leagues at all.

A very nice outing by Banks! Great win to take the series from the Giants. I hope it continues.

#86@LynchMob : It will be quite a test the next two – versus Lincecum & Zambrano – win these two and it could really set them on a roll
