IGD: Padres vs Rockies (21 Sep 07)
Fri, Sep 21, 2007by Geoff Young

| sp: | Jake Peavy (18-6, 2.39) vs Franklin Morales (2-2, 3.81) |

Big series this weekend against the Rockies. Yeah, you think?
The Padres have won seven in a row, while Colorado has taken its last five. With one more win in their final 10 games, the Rockies will have their first winning season since 2000. Folks make a fuss about what a surprise the Diamondbacks are this year, but at least you could it see it coming (if you were looking in the right places). What the Rockies have done is just amazing, and I think that Clint Hurdle deserves serious consideration for Manager of the Year (as do Bud Black and Bob Melvin).
Meanwhile, here are some fun splits. I love that the Padres don’t really give away any innings but completely dominate the ninth:

Bradley in the starting lineup!
September 21, 2007 at 7:10 pm
Is it raining in SD? It is in LA.

On the San Diego Union Tribune message board, in response to the story about Barry and the Giants parting ways, there’s one awesome post I wanted to reprint here:

I’m not much a video sharing guy - I don’t spend much time on YouTube… Anyway, Aaron Gleeman has two SUPER-FUNNY clips on his site today. One involves OJ in a way that is just blessedly apropriate and other is mean/funny and takes place in Yankee Stadium.

#2: Not yet. Supposed to sometime after the game tonight.
September 21, 2007 at 7:31 pm
2: Its not raining in Orange County either
September 21, 2007 at 7:31 pm
jake looks good
September 21, 2007 at 7:35 pm
#5,6 Well then perhaps the gods are looking out for us tonight.
September 21, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Dodgers up 3-1 in the third.
September 21, 2007 at 7:39 pm
That was a wicked nasty pitch by Jake for Strike 3.
September 21, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Jake is friggin’ hot tonight (as usual of late)!
September 21, 2007 at 7:42 pm
10: Strike 2 and 3 were almost identical. Jake has got some nasty movement on the slider tonight.
September 21, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Geoff, is your server running a little slow tonight?
September 21, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Tonight I told my wife (she’s Fillipina) that Jake was probably going to win the Cy Young award this year. She said that in Tagalog that means ‘that’s a pitty.’ So, if you say Cy Young as one word that’s the translation. Which I thought was aprapro for the batters that have had to face him.
She laughed when I told her that Cy Young was a person and what the award ment. Then she appologized.
September 21, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Hell. Nothing like swinging at a first-pitch ball when the pitcher has walked two in the inning. Thanks, Mike.
September 21, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Jake is on fire right now.
September 21, 2007 at 8:00 pm
There are worse first pitches to swing out. Always seems bad when you make an out, especially a pop up.
September 21, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Tony Clark hits a 2-HR; tied. Do I dare root for one Jeff Kent to return the favor?
September 21, 2007 at 8:09 pm
4-3 Snakes. Livan Hernandez singled in the go-ahead run.
September 21, 2007 at 8:11 pm
..then Chris Young hit a 2-run homer. 6-3 Snakes. COME ON DOGS!
September 21, 2007 at 8:13 pm
tough inning for Jake
September 21, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Creamed can of corn to get out of this one!
September 21, 2007 at 8:15 pm
75 pitches through 5 innings. 7 K’s and 1 hit so far.
September 21, 2007 at 8:16 pm
Jake is holding down the fort, but we eventually have to put up some runs or it’s moot.
September 21, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Since the Giants aren’t going to resign Bonds, he shouldn’t go away mad, but just go away. God, I hate that guy.
September 21, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Wow base hit for Marcus
September 21, 2007 at 8:22 pm
With 1 out I think they should let Jake swing away more often. He’s a decent hitter and laying down a bunt with 1 out doesnt ever seem to help our team.
September 21, 2007 at 8:35 pm
We really need to get on the board here.
September 21, 2007 at 8:35 pm
This dude was born in ‘86. That’s sick.
September 21, 2007 at 8:36 pm
Jake needs some support, and fast. He deserves the W
September 21, 2007 at 8:39 pm
This is ridiculous.
September 21, 2007 at 8:40 pm
It would be nice for Jake to have a shot at 20 wins…
September 21, 2007 at 8:40 pm
I want Hairston in this lineup everyday.
September 21, 2007 at 8:42 pm
#33: Ditto
September 21, 2007 at 8:43 pm
Ick, this is quickly going downhill…
September 21, 2007 at 8:43 pm
33: Where does he play?
September 21, 2007 at 8:44 pm
We need a double play here
September 21, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Brian Giles looks a bit worn out right now. I would imagine that Hairston gets the nod tomorrow in right. If he stays hot, I am not sure you can’t start him everyday. We’ll switch up the Giles brothers. lets give Marcus a few more starts down the stretch and Brian less….
September 21, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Dammit
September 21, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Fuddruckers.
September 21, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Why couldnt Marcus get to that ball?
September 21, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Ok, now lets get on the board and bail out Jake.
Kouz
Bard
and PH (hopefully) - Hairston
September 21, 2007 at 8:52 pm
42: Funny thing is Jake shouldnt have to get “bailed out: of an outing like this 7 IP 8 K’s 1 ER. Our offense is so hit or miss, luckily they have strung together 7 decent offensive nights.
September 21, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Dogs are letting us down.
September 21, 2007 at 8:54 pm
it doesnt make much sense at all anyways that Brian Giles is starting over hairston tonight anyways with this lefty whos been just eating left handed batters alive.
hairston is right handed and is catching fire lately. why isnt he playing tonight
!

September 21, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Does anywone have the W-L stats for when Steve Quis calls the games as opposed to Matty?
September 21, 2007 at 8:55 pm
ah, double post my bad
September 21, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Alright lets take advantage of one of these lead-off walks for once
September 21, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Morales is done. He was done last inning but Bradley bailed him out. We should be ab
September 21, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Morales is done. He was done last inning but Bradley bailed him out. We should be able to conjue a run or two in the last 3 frames and win this thing.
September 21, 2007 at 8:57 pm
47: That would be funny to see
September 21, 2007 at 8:58 pm
#46 ditto Ian
September 21, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Easy with the double posts guys
September 21, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Quis just announced that Hairston is sick, was told to stay home.
September 21, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Marcus and Barrett are just plain worthless with a bat in thier hands.
September 21, 2007 at 9:02 pm
why pinch hit blum here?
September 21, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Ch. 4 sez that Hairston is out. Stomach Flu - he was sent home to avoid getting anyone else sick.
September 21, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Please PH Hairston for Blum now…
September 21, 2007 at 9:04 pm
ah ensberg is better
September 21, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Flu, eh. Ensberg will do.
September 21, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Lets hope Ensberg gets something to hit.
September 21, 2007 at 9:06 pm
geez
September 21, 2007 at 9:09 pm
you can safely call the end of the dodgers season a collapse if they lose worse than the 10-3 score that is already happenin
September 21, 2007 at 9:13 pm
Is anyone else perplexed that Bard was asked to sacrifice with NOG up next? Granted Bard isn’t as good as a left-hand batter but that’s almost like giving up two outs cause Giles just sucks right now.
(I think NOG is supposed to be Marcus Giles but correct me if I’m wrong)
September 21, 2007 at 9:13 pm
Couldn’t we have kept Hairston locked away somewhere so he could PH?
September 21, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Maybe he’s on his way to the park now and will make a Kirk Gibson-style appearance…
September 21, 2007 at 9:15 pm
#65: NOG is Marcus (Not Orange Giles)
September 21, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Oh no. That ‘inside out’ powerless and weak Brian Giles lazy fly ball or squibber to the pitcher swing is back. It was more prevalent last year but its reared its ugly head again.
September 21, 2007 at 9:22 pm
Well, at least it’s down to the heart of our lineup.
September 21, 2007 at 9:29 pm
YO…ADRIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 21, 2007 at 9:30 pm
Adrian!!!! Beautiful!
September 21, 2007 at 9:30 pm
Geoff, 1 down, 3 to go…
September 21, 2007 at 9:31 pm
yeah that was so awesome, thanks adrian
September 21, 2007 at 9:31 pm
That was awesome. Corpas thought he’d slip a fastball by him and paid the price!
September 21, 2007 at 9:31 pm
Come on Kouz - time for a walk-off…
September 21, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Geoff & I were talking today, he’s right, Kouz just spits on anything he doesn’t want. That first pitch was awesome.
September 21, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Even if it goes extras, we still have almost everyone in the bullpen available…
But that’s not going to happen. Kouz needs to steal second so Bard has a RISP…
September 21, 2007 at 9:35 pm
UGH. Bud, if you would have followed my plan, there would be no GIDP….
September 21, 2007 at 9:35 pm
What a lousy pitch to swing at, Bard.
September 21, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Accidentally posted this in the “Friday Links” discussion, but what the hell:
For Lynchmob:
DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!
September 21, 2007 at 9:40 pm
I have bad memories about Stewart…
September 21, 2007 at 9:47 pm

September 21, 2007 at 9:47 pm
These young Rockies are a patient bunch, them, the D’backs, & us will make for a competitive rest of the decade…
September 21, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Allright…let’s win it now! I have no need or desire to deal with Holliday-Helton-Atkins anymore tonight
September 21, 2007 at 9:48 pm
And gets him out with the 87MPH one…
September 21, 2007 at 9:51 pm
what a pitiful AB by Sledge. I know, big surpise
September 21, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Sheesh - the heart of our lineup followed by the dregs of our bench…
September 21, 2007 at 9:53 pm
Can’t hide Sledge now. Myrow next time in the same situation.
September 21, 2007 at 9:53 pm
I have a lot more confidence in those batting 2-thu-6…
September 21, 2007 at 9:53 pm
I wouldn’t trust those gametracker radar-gun readings.
September 21, 2007 at 9:53 pm
nice
September 21, 2007 at 9:54 pm
Rammycackle from Giles. Let’s hope he breaks out of this slump with that one.
September 21, 2007 at 9:54 pm
Lets go Cammy!!!
September 21, 2007 at 9:56 pm
hold ‘em again ‘pen
September 21, 2007 at 9:56 pm
NO ME GUSTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 21, 2007 at 9:57 pm
When was the last time Cammy got ahold of a breaking ball?
September 21, 2007 at 9:58 pm
I don’t like these hear attack innings so late in the season. Let’s please keep me from visiting Kaiser.
September 21, 2007 at 10:00 pm
*heart
September 21, 2007 at 10:03 pm
I really would rather not have to face Holliday or Helton this game again…
September 21, 2007 at 10:05 pm
awesome pitch by HB - challenged him and blew him away…WHEW
September 21, 2007 at 10:05 pm
Bell just rung his bell.
September 21, 2007 at 10:05 pm
uncle charlie please
September 21, 2007 at 10:06 pm
or maybe just the hard high stuff
September 21, 2007 at 10:07 pm
I wouldn’t be opposed to unintentionally walking Helton.
Well, now that it’s 1-2, maybe not…
September 21, 2007 at 10:07 pm
Peter, unusual to see you in the IGD. What up?
September 21, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Props to HB - that was some pitching there. Two innings of tough hitters. 40+ pitches. Now we get Jorge “the arsonist” Julio in the bottom of the 11th. Let’s go fellas!!!!
September 21, 2007 at 10:09 pm
Bradley, Adrian and Khalil
Sounds like runs.
September 21, 2007 at 10:14 pm
maybe not…
September 21, 2007 at 10:17 pm
Now who comes in?
