IGD: Padres @ Reds (11 Aug 07)

Game #116
time: 12:55 p.m. PT
tv: none
sp: Justin Germano (6-6, 4.30) vs Bobby Livingston (2-2, 4.46)
pre: Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com

Here’s an exercise for those who would jump off the Padres bandwagon during times of adversity (and for anyone else who might be curious). Which of the following describes San Diego’s last 10 games, and which describes the Diamondbacks’ last 10 games?

Team A

Runs scored: 12, 11, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, 1, 0 (50 tot, 5.0/game)
Runs allowed: 10, 9, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, 2, 0, 0 (42 tot, 4.2/game)

Team B

Runs scored: 11, 10, 9, 8, 4, 4, 3, 3, 1, 0 (53 tot, 5.3/game)
Runs allowed: 11, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2, 0, 0, 0 (43 tot, 4.3/game)

Now, which of these teams went 8-2 during that stretch, and which went 6-4? Ah, the joy of small sample sizes.

Reminder: This one isn’t on television, because FOX has decided, among other things, that the crap Pirates/Giants game will attract more viewers. Go Padres!

  1. Wow. It’s not negativity coming from me….we just aren’t hitting and haven’t really hit all year. The odds are that it’ll change. You can only go up from. I love the Padres!!!!!! We are luminous beings capable of anything. Go Padres!!!

  2. -Marcus Giles UPDATE -

Marcus Giles is 3 for his last 42 (.071) official at bats with 4 walks.

When do we pull the cord on this guy ?

  3. 49: I don’t think this IGD is any more negative than any other losing game thread. Usually the negativity is directed at specific players during the game, though it has been known to be directed at the team as a whole on occasion.

The Cardinals weren’t “hot” against us last year – we hit against them like we’ve hit all this year – very, very, very poorly.

As Geoff has pointed out, our lineup can make any pitcher look like Cy Young. I guess I’m not willing to delude myself that Peavy & Young will toss shut outs in their combined three starts of the Division Series.

Will I still root for them to win every day? Yes. Will I get my hopes up that they’ll even make or go deep in the post season? No. Will I be happy if they do? You bet.

  4. #49: Pat, thanks much for the suggestion. This is not something I’m looking to implement right now, but I appreciate the feedback. Although I share your frustration at the tone around here at times, I’d like to maintain as open a flow of communication as possible.

  5. To put things into perspective, last year at this time the Padres were set to host the Giants for a four game series. A series that they got swept at home to fall below .500 (60-61) and drop to four games back. So, the 88 win Padres (2006) were under .500 in the middle of August last year.

  6. 54: I know you feel this way and I was probably a bit overboard myself, but it was truly striking the number of unrecognizable/unfamiliar names on the thread whose comments essentially consisted of, “We suck!”

  7. 53: Hey, Sean, as always, your mileage may vary. I agree losing game IGD’s do have a different tone than winning game threads, but there was something very different to this one, at least to my perception, than even a “normal” losing game thread.

I’d hate to see DS overrun by negativity and ignorance, and there are plenty of people who fit that description out there with a computer and an internet connection. Perhaps I’m the one overreacting though. As I said, ymmv.
