Yes, technically there is a game today, but the real focus is on Tony Gwynn’s induction into the Hall of Fame. The ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m. PT. Feel free to talk about either the game or Gwynn’s induction here. Just remember that there are 162 games in a season, but there is only one Gwynn…

get the split, boys.
July 29, 2007 at 10:52 am
The ceremony is online. I googled for HOF and I’m watching it live….I think and free.
July 29, 2007 at 11:08 am
Yep, I’m watching it online too. It’s unfortunate that they don’t have the crowd mic’d, so you can’t really hear them going crazy. The introduction of the all the hall of famers was pretty cool.
July 29, 2007 at 11:22 am
Over a five year period, Gwynn hit .337 with 2 strikes. Wow.

Cameron got a piece of that one, huh?
July 29, 2007 at 11:25 am
Wow, apparently the Padres want us to focus on Tony today so they made this one a laugher early.
Anyone still interested in Jennings?

11-0 in the first. Jennings is not having a very good day.
July 29, 2007 at 11:27 am
Well, that was a fun 1st inning, 11 runs and there are still only two outs.
July 29, 2007 at 11:27 am
Padres are doing an excellent job of paying tribute to Gwynn with their hitting today.
July 29, 2007 at 11:37 am
Good looking inning for Stauffer.
July 29, 2007 at 11:50 am
Tony is making me tearup….by talking about his father.
July 29, 2007 at 11:51 am
That 5.5 sign is cool.
July 29, 2007 at 11:54 am
Today, more than any other day, I am so proud to be a San Diego Padre fan.
July 29, 2007 at 11:55 am
The video tributes have both been excellent. I like how in Ripken’s they are focusing on his impact in changing the shortstop position first, instead of the consecutive game record.
July 29, 2007 at 11:57 am
How lucky are we in San Diego to be represented by Tony Gwynn, Trevor Hoffman, and LaDainian Tomlinson, who are all just great guys as well as great players?
July 29, 2007 at 12:02 pm
I’ve been watching the Hall of Fame, where the hell did this laugher come from?
July 29, 2007 at 12:06 pm
Stauffer’s fastball seems to have more life on it than I remember.
July 29, 2007 at 12:34 pm
Time to get Stauffer out of there. We have 13 pitchers, so covering the innings shouldn’t be a problem.
July 29, 2007 at 12:36 pm
Hensley doesn’t exactly put out the fire, does he?
July 29, 2007 at 12:37 pm
Who the fuck blows a 12 run lead?!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 29, 2007 at 12:37 pm
Wow. I didn’t think there was any possible way this game could become close, but clearly I have underestimated the Padres pitchers.
July 29, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Who gets that next start for the Pads ? Let’s get out of this one alive !!
July 29, 2007 at 12:55 pm
I love when Blum gets intentionally walked.
July 29, 2007 at 12:55 pm
C’mon, Hairston, Branyan could have done that.
July 29, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Cameron needs a triple for a cycle.
July 29, 2007 at 1:50 pm
In that inning by Meredith, righties were 0-3 with 2 k’s and a ground ball; lefties were 3-3 with three balls in the air.
July 29, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Making the (poor) assumption that we won’t blow a 7-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, any wagers on who gets the win? Brocail would seem to have the best case…
July 29, 2007 at 2:27 pm
That was a fun game! Bell is still awesome at least.
I think the win just goes to Hensley, since we never trailed and the starting pitcher didn’t go 5 innings.
July 29, 2007 at 2:39 pm
I think the win goes to the reliever judged most effective by the official scorer. I know that seems odd, but I’m pretty sure that’s the rule.
July 29, 2007 at 2:45 pm
29: Yeah, good call. I had heard that rule before, but I’ve never seen it actually applied to a game. Brocail gets the win.
July 29, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Ensberg released. Do Pads get him?
July 29, 2007 at 3:05 pm
Atl leads the D-Backs 8-0, and Colorado is up 9-4 against the Dodgers, bioth games in the seventh. We should pull to within a half-game of each.
31: I doubt Ensberg would outperform Kouz for the remainder of the season. If there were a good-hitting 2B available, that would be the only clear way to upgrade the offense. We could improve our offense in RF, as well, but I doubt we’d be willing to bench a $10-million-per-year player.
July 29, 2007 at 3:10 pm
31: He’s better than some of the guys on our roster.
July 29, 2007 at 3:21 pm
32: The way Giles is playing that upgrade would have to come at high price. What would it take to get, say, KGJr out of Cinci, even if he’d waive his NTC?
33: Ensberg hit .232 last year and still have a .396 OBP if memory serves. He can out-OG OG.
July 29, 2007 at 4:00 pm
33: So was Branyan, but he still got released.
Ensberg is better than Hillenbrand, though, if we’re still looking for a righty corner bat.
July 29, 2007 at 6:43 pm
29: Technically, the official scorer always has that option, but they don’t to stay within tradition and stay away from controversy.
July 30, 2007 at 12:06 am
32: Top players on 25-Man Roster by wOBA (min. 100 PA):
Brian Giles (.353)
Adrian Gonzalez (.352)
Mike Cameron (.336)
Josh Bard (.326)
Khalil Greene (.310)
Jose Cruz Jr. (.305)
Kevin Kouzmanoff (.304)
Marcus Giles (.294)
Geoff Blum (.286)
Among those w/less than 100 PA:
Milton Bradley (.442)
Michael Barrett (.260)
Scott Hairston (.000)
July 30, 2007 at 7:08 am
36: For the most part I agree they should just keep it easy and stick to traditional formats, but in the rare games like Linebrink’s “win” a couple weeks ago, I think overruling the normal conventions is in order.
