IGD: Padres vs Red Sox (24 Jun 07)

I think it’s safe to say that the first two games of this series have lived up to the hype. Sure, the Padres could’ve done more damage against Daisuke Matsuzaka in the first inning on Friday, and it would’ve been nice if the Triple-A umpire hadn’t blown two calls on Saturday and turned those into controversies (the latter of which got Boston manager Terry Francona tossed from the game), but we’re nitpicking.
From the perspective of a Padres fan, Saturday night’s contest was particularly satisfying. Folks in these parts have a special distaste for professional athletes who diss our town. Heck, the first thing I ever wrote at Ducksnorts ripped Hideki Irabu for that very transgression.
Doug Mirabelli? Boston can have him. It was fun to hear him booed every time he came up to bat. It was fun to watch him flail helplessly at Chris Young’s high fastballs. And it was fun to watch Josh Bard, run out of Beantown because he couldn’t catch Tim Wakefield’s knuckleball, have a field day against Wakefield at the plate. If anyone deserves poetic justice, it’s gotta be a guy named Bard.
Meanwhile, Sunday afternoon’s finale features two young right-handers that are plowing through opposing lineups. This just might be the best pitching matchup that MLB sees all year.
Go Padres!

Your right GY. I smiled alot last night. Bard lighting up Wake, ‘belli hearin it from San Diego. Today may be the best pitching matchup of the series but last nights games was just plain fun to watch. Also Bard stepped up and made a case to platoon the catchers spot and not give Barrett all the starts
June 24, 2007 at 9:55 am
I just finished posting a little bit about how this could possibly be a preview of Game 1 of the World Series this year ( http://mvn.com/mlb-padres/ )… and I really think it could, especially if we have some people start hitting to projections and/or we go get a bat in the next six weeks.
I also loved Mirabelli’s struggles and loved that Bard had a great night with Doug seeing (and hearing!) it from the best seat in the house. Especially that first pitch. Actually, I was very pleased with the umpiring last night for the most part. Even the blown calls were offset by the Ump being humble and wise enough to ask for help. I think we should give the kid a lot of props on that. The only thing that scares me is tha if he worked third last night, he should be behind the dish today… I hope he’s briefed on Peavy’s late movement. If were Barrett, I’d start the dialouge EARLY and talk a lot!
Can’t wait to get to Petco this afternoon!
June 24, 2007 at 10:07 am
2: I thought he was only subbing for someone this one game last night?
June 24, 2007 at 10:59 am
2: I know it was a little less fun to not have the torrid May we’ve grown accustomed to at Petco Park, but I’m holding out hope that this year we’ll peak during a certain month a little later in the year. If we can hit the intensity we did in May of 2005/2006 in the post-season this year - now THAT would be some magic. An unbelievable May record can apparently carry you to the post-season, but it doesn’t do anything once you get there.
So while it’s a little disappointing that we haven’t had all of our hitters really going at once, and sometimes it seems no one is on, it’s also a little bit reassuring to know that we still have a lot of room for improvement when everything clicks.
June 24, 2007 at 11:12 am
Some things just needed to be pointed out…
http://mvn.com/mlb-padres/2007.....g-crybaby/
Jeez… how about learning how to be a man at this point in your life, Tim? Oh, and by the way… you lost by more than those runs. Whiner!
June 24, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Wonder how many more at bats the .217 hitting T. Sledge gets ? The only… and I mean the only mistake KT has made was not giving Cust a shot (.270 11 homeruns and a .450 obp). Probably would have been best to wait a bit longer to see if Sledge would be able to cut it.
June 24, 2007 at 12:35 pm
6: only problem with Cust was he was worse than Branyan and Sledge in the outfield. He would had been a much better bat off the bench than Sledge though.
June 24, 2007 at 12:35 pm
I dunno if someone mentioned this yet, but pretty sucky. Beck had a hell of a run for us the year that Hoffy was out…
http://blogs.chicagosports.chi.....k-rip.html
June 24, 2007 at 12:42 pm
#8- I just read it on mlb.com. Unreal. Beck was only 38. The Giants were told last night. No word yet on what the cause was. He sure did a great job when Hoffy was out. How very sad.
June 24, 2007 at 12:45 pm
My only arguement/question against shipping out Cust is why sign him in the first place ? We all knew Cust is a brutal outfielder but the guy has way more upside than Crudge which is why you want to keep him and at least give him a shot. Meanwhile, Sledge is close to being a butcher as a fielder as well and is not the least bit selective at the plate while Cust’s OBP is consistently .450+.
June 24, 2007 at 12:57 pm
I’m real dissapointed to see Blum starting over Giles at 2nd today.
June 24, 2007 at 1:02 pm
Silent L starting again? I can only blame KT, if he is on the team as the backup to both ss/2b then Bud Black has to use him eventually.
June 24, 2007 at 1:05 pm
I should mention NOG with a .503 OPS lifetime off Beckett in 28 AB’s…..not a bad idea for a day off
June 24, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Termel has an .820 OPS against RHP, which I think works as a platoon. Look, no one can claim not giving Cust a look was a good idea. He would have to have one leg or arm missing to offset his offense. He is TTO guy with bad defense. I wish they would have let him play and see what happens. But they did not. They make a lot of good moves, this just was not one of them. No one, even the As, would have expected Cust to put up 900+ OPS once called up. And it would have been hard to pencil him in the outfield because of his defense. When Piazza went down, the As really had no alternative, so why not? The DH is a good spot for him.
He has been great for the As, but his numbers are weird. In about 150 ABs, he has walked 31 times but struck out over 50 times. Add his 10 knocks, you 90/150 being TTO ~65%. That is staggering. Not bad, but just so weird you can understand a team not knowing what to make of him.
June 24, 2007 at 1:08 pm
I can’t believe I wake up at 6 am (Australia time) to see B(l)um play!
June 24, 2007 at 1:20 pm
I can’t remember the last time I was this nervous during a Peavy start.
June 24, 2007 at 1:21 pm
I know I’m going way out on a limb with this…but I don’t think we’re going to see a lot of hits today…
June 24, 2007 at 1:23 pm
Little different not having the channel 4 guys on the tv today…
June 24, 2007 at 1:25 pm
I hope that this trend I’m noticing in the first few ABs today by the BoSox doesn’t continue. Jake has now had about 3 - 4 strikes that have not been called.
June 24, 2007 at 1:26 pm
18: Where are you? MLB.tv is showing the channel 4 broadcast.
June 24, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Directv is showing the Boston announcers for the first time this weekend
June 24, 2007 at 1:28 pm
WTH? Are we pretending to be Boston defense today?
Let’s try not to have the whole team injured before the 3rd inning.
June 24, 2007 at 1:30 pm
I’ll be interested to see if the outside corner continues to move throughout the game
June 24, 2007 at 1:30 pm
Man, that was a brutal play all around. Can’t fault the boys for hustling out the play.
June 24, 2007 at 1:30 pm
nicely done Jake…
June 24, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Varitek gets a triple out of that? Ridiculous.
June 24, 2007 at 1:31 pm
I hope Peavy’s okay. And I wonder if Greene’s glass hands survived that collision.
June 24, 2007 at 1:32 pm
24: The hustling doesn’t bother me, collisions do.
June 24, 2007 at 1:32 pm
I think we just found another way for Adrian to end up with a triple
June 24, 2007 at 1:39 pm
Dogs lose … it’s a good day already!
June 24, 2007 at 1:41 pm
30: YAY! Nice to see the Dodgers can drop a series to a sub-par team as well.
June 24, 2007 at 1:43 pm
15: At least it’s on TV there - ESPN Intl decided that the best thing they could show was the last-place Rangers vs. the 4th place Astros. Combined they’re 26 games below .500. That should be a thriller.
June 24, 2007 at 1:43 pm
Not liking the strike zone, or lack thereof, they’re giving Jake today.
June 24, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes - J Beckett 25-17; J Peavy 34-20.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Beckett 3-0; J Peavy 3-1.
Batters faced - J Beckett 7; J Peavy 8.
… looks like we’re getting what everybody expected!
This will be my last post today … a big part of me would rather be here with you … a big part of me wants to be with some buddies here in town watching the Beavers play for a National Championship, but it’s my duty and honor to be able to go see Kellen Kulbacki’s pro debut today down in Eugene (game time is 4pm, link to radio can be found at Ems page on milb.com) … I’ll take pics and get ‘em posted … you guys (and gals) take care of the Sox!
Go Padres!
Go Beavs!
Go Ems!
… now that’s a nice trifecta
June 24, 2007 at 1:47 pm
Have fun LM…I have no idea who the Ems are…but I’m rooting for them for ya today…
June 24, 2007 at 1:47 pm
It looked like Cameron had a chance at catching that fly from Crisp, but backed off. Maybe he thought there’d be a collision between him and the right fielder.
June 24, 2007 at 1:48 pm
36: can’t hardly blame him for that….
June 24, 2007 at 1:50 pm
pitch count is going way up here…. good thing the bullpen has gotten some rest
June 24, 2007 at 1:50 pm
Jake against the Red Sox is not a good matchup if only because the Red Sox are really good at making the opposing pitcher throw a lot of pitches.
June 24, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Well this is why we NEED that ball to be caught
June 24, 2007 at 1:53 pm
I hate cheap hits. The Red Sox just scored on two of them.
June 24, 2007 at 1:54 pm
How did that get through on that side? Don’t we have eight guys standing between first and second?
June 24, 2007 at 1:55 pm
We couldn’t shift on him because of the runner on second, I guess.
June 24, 2007 at 1:58 pm
I hate Geoff Blum.
June 24, 2007 at 1:58 pm
Yeah but why is B(l)um shaded toward the 2nd base bag? Secondidly why can’t silent L field a grounder I expect my 3 year old nephew to catch
June 24, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Can we get a baseball player in 2b?
June 24, 2007 at 1:59 pm
More cheap singles by the Red Sox. One ball has been hit decently this inning.
June 24, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Jake has gotten some of the worst luck I have seen this year. Second straight game where the opposition has scored despite ridiculously weak singles. So incredibly frustrating to see them get lucky like that.
June 24, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Branyan “I’m Mighty Mouse…I’m here to save the day…!” And he did for now.
June 24, 2007 at 2:05 pm
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE DEFENSE, Cruz gave up on that fly ball and then lets Otriz score? Cameron/Cruz gave up on the other one and Blum missed 2 plays at second. Jake straight up got beat by his own teams poor defense
June 24, 2007 at 2:05 pm
At least Blum got a hit i guess
June 24, 2007 at 2:06 pm
Okay Team Blum. Now you have to make up for that error by hitting one out of the park. Or you’re kicked off Team Padres.
June 24, 2007 at 2:06 pm
Seriously a pathetic inning for the outfield
June 24, 2007 at 2:07 pm
52: My feed is slow, a hit is good, but doesn’t make up for his error (mysteriously ruled a hit).
June 24, 2007 at 2:08 pm
I’ve been listening to both 1090 and the TV broadcast, and Coleman and Leitner are so much more critical than Grant and Vasgersian. I definitely prefer the radio guys, despite Coleman’s occasional unintelligibility.
June 24, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Come on Barrett this is the reason your on the team
June 24, 2007 at 2:11 pm
55: I would classify it more as constant than as occasional, but when Masur and Leitner are talking I agree.
June 24, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Peavy, Alex Cora is horrible. David Ortiz is good, and he’s on deck.
June 24, 2007 at 2:16 pm
55: Along with Leitner’s constant stuttering
June 24, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Jake is not looking good today.
June 24, 2007 at 2:18 pm
Geoff Blum is easily the worst player on the 25-man roster. He’s a no-hit, no-field waste of space.
June 24, 2007 at 2:19 pm
60: Jake would be looking a lot better with some half decent fielding.
June 24, 2007 at 2:20 pm
54: It also doesn’t make up for his absolute lack of range that makes anything hit to the right side of the infield a hit.
June 24, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Hard to blame the pitcher for stuff like pop ups to right center and ground balls to 2nd base
June 24, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Doesn’t Bocachica play a little second? He certainly would have been a better choice than Blum.
June 24, 2007 at 2:20 pm
I concur, Richard. There are at least 25 guys in the minors who could do a better job than Blum, and for the league minimum.
June 24, 2007 at 2:20 pm
60: Nobody looks good with a .438 BABIP allowed.
June 24, 2007 at 2:20 pm
62: Agreed, plus he went down twice early in the game. I just hope he doesnt end up getting hurt. He looked good early. Normally Peavy’s roughest inning is the first.
June 24, 2007 at 2:22 pm
64: Exactly, pop ups to right as well.
June 24, 2007 at 2:22 pm
I would rather see Black stick Headley at 2nd than B(l)um if NOG needs a day off.
June 24, 2007 at 2:22 pm
Great at bat, Adrian.
June 24, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Anyone else think that Khalil Greene is barely rotating his hips at all when he swings?
June 24, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Good thing Greeney doubles with no one on
June 24, 2007 at 2:26 pm
70: He couldn’t be any worse defensively and he’s obviously a better hitter.
June 24, 2007 at 2:28 pm
Is it possible that they string a couple hits together and help Jake with the bats since their prized defense has been anyything but today?
June 24, 2007 at 2:29 pm
73: You do know that Khalil has the best numbers on the team with bases loaded, right?
At least he did something productive at the dish. Adrian has really been scuffling lately. Beckett doesn’t look that overpowering, we’re just not having strong ABs.
June 24, 2007 at 2:29 pm
75: Probably not.
June 24, 2007 at 2:30 pm
93 pitches thru 4 innings for Jake, ouch. The D has been sketchy, but he just doesn’t really seem to have his good stuff today.
June 24, 2007 at 2:32 pm
Apparently Jake needs to strike everyone out.
June 24, 2007 at 2:33 pm
78: It didnt look bad earlier till the D forced him to throw too many pitches in an inning
June 24, 2007 at 2:34 pm
76: I’m talking about today, not over the whole season. And it wasnt a rag on KG it was a rag on the 2 guys before him not being able to get on base and making it a wasted double
June 24, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Be nice if that low strike was called for both pitchers
June 24, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Peavy’s stats in day games, throughout his career, have been terrible. The man just cannot pitch during the day. (Bill James noted this trend among power pitchers 20 years ago). Knowing that, and knowing the Pads have around 30 scheduled day games this season, does anybody think it makes sense to play with the rotation to avoid Jake starting during the day? I know it siounds crazy, but the stats certainly don’t lie.
June 24, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Good call pinch hitting Sledge Bud, how bout you pinch hit someone who can play 2nd?
June 24, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Never mind hahaha
June 24, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Hey, Blum is 2-for-2 today. Small miracles!
June 24, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Holy Crap! Someone actually got a pinch hit double for us.
June 24, 2007 at 2:45 pm
No out chance to tie this up or take the lead.
June 24, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Chase,
Shouldn’t you be watching the game? We might need you later!
(dumb joke)
June 24, 2007 at 2:46 pm
83: It’s a good point in general, but today he was called by singles blooping in, not booming doubles carrying during the day. I assume CY would be similary affected by the day game, so it’s probably not worth the trouble to rearrange the rotation. Last time Jake started during the day he dominated the Brewers.
That was an incredibly generous strike one call to Cruz.
June 24, 2007 at 2:51 pm
I am absolutely shocked that the Padres failed to get the runner in from third with one out.
June 24, 2007 at 2:54 pm
Come on Adrian - get Jake off the hook….
June 24, 2007 at 2:54 pm
90 feet away from a tie game…Grrrrr
June 24, 2007 at 2:54 pm
We really needed to tie it up there.
June 24, 2007 at 2:55 pm
I guess Ring is coming in?
June 24, 2007 at 3:18 pm
The BoSox bullpen is way too good for me to be comfortable. Someone needs to step up and make a big play here.
June 24, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Who’s the blonde singing God Bless America?
June 24, 2007 at 3:21 pm
OK, let get some runs and throw this back in the east coast’s face.
June 24, 2007 at 3:22 pm
98: I agree Rick.
June 24, 2007 at 3:22 pm
We definitely need a run here, because Okajima and Papelbon are pretty much untouchable. Unfortunately, Blum is up second this inning.
June 24, 2007 at 3:23 pm
“Missed it by *that* much” -Maxwell Smart
June 24, 2007 at 3:30 pm
Josh Beckett is pitching quite well this season, especially after his awful last year. However, how is he even in the discussion as All-Star game starter? Danny Haren has a 1.78 ERA; Beckett’s is 3.10. It’s not particularly close.
June 24, 2007 at 3:32 pm
Attaway, Linebrink. Good control there.
June 24, 2007 at 3:32 pm
We didn’t need that.
June 24, 2007 at 3:32 pm
Should also be noted that two of the first three pitches were actually strikes.
June 24, 2007 at 3:33 pm
Well Linebrink with his usual 1st batter issues
June 24, 2007 at 3:33 pm
re 105-where did that come from? Linebrink is ALL OVER THE PLACE
June 24, 2007 at 3:34 pm
Well this game is now officially a lost cause. Thanks for that hold Scotty.
June 24, 2007 at 3:36 pm
107: The catcher sets up outside, Linebrink misses badly so the catcher reaches way ba
