IGD: Padres vs Reds (16 May 07)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Jake Peavy (5-1, 1.52 ERA) vs Bronson Arroyo (2-3, 2.87 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com

Gotta love Jake Peavy‘s last four starts: 28 IP, 12 H, 9 BB, 46 SO, 0.96 ERA. Whenever you’re striking out more than twice the number of baserunners you’re allowing, that’s a good thing.

Let’s score some runs. Go Padres!

  1. Ladies & Gents, Umps are very immediate people… if you are three for three, you get the benefit of the doubt on that!

  2. Hey, that was a high breaking ball. Anti-climactic or not, I’ll take it.

  3. Woohoo! Way to go Kouz!

Maybe Arroyo shouldn’t have been left in to throw 130 pitches?

  4. Ah, the ol’ walk-off-walk … better than the walk-off-balk, I s’pose …

  5. whoa! Either Kouz was completely fooled or that was a hell of a gutsy decision to take that pitch. Nice job by the kid not getting swing happy after going 3 for 3.

  6. Nice game by Kouz tonite. Glad to see him working the count for what we need.

  7. Let’s hope the Cards can figure out a way to pull off a win. I’d really like to pick up a game on the Dodgers.

  8. 153 … we’re just spoiled … that’s what life is like without a bully like the Padres have!

  9. I’ll take that win anyday! Gotta love KK taking that pitch and Trevor getting the win. I thought Jake could’ve done a better job. But, you can’t have everything.

  10. 128 … and nice to see another nice outing by the Storm’s Wade LeBlanc tonight … the Storm web page says Wade got “Cal League Pitcher of the Week” for Apr30-May6 … http://www.stormbaseball.com/Main.html … and he hasn’t slowed down!

  11. 159 … wow … now who’s pissy? :-)

  12. 159: He did end up pitching 7 innings, with 5 k’s and 1 bb, despite that 34 pitch first inning. It’s not like he got knocked around, we just got spoiled watching him strike out 10 guys every game.

Could someone describe exactly what happened on the Bard play? Also, is that run now unearned, even though the situation would have been bases loaded and one out if the error hadn’t been made?

  13. 161: Yeah, I’m spoiled. I’ve started expecting greatness out of Jake. My bad.

  14. 162: What Jake did after a rough first inning was great.

  15. 162 … good question (about the ER) … i would guess it’s gotta be unearned … similarly, it seems like the run in the 7th would be unearned (since it scored on a error by Dunn) …

  16. St. Louis trying to comeback, 5-4 top 7.

  17. 162: slow comebacker to Arroyo, he had Khalil dead at third but bounce the throw. The third baseman scooped it and had it in his glove but it squirted out.

  18. OT … if you’re a bobblehead fan (as I am), check this out … http://sports.espn.go.com/minorlbb/news/story?id=2872648 … reminds me that I’m going to miss going up to Seattle on Friday … I had intended to make it a trifecta evening … visiting a friend in Seattle … seeing the Padres … and getting a King Felix bobblehead :-)

  19. Hmmm, this is an interesting fact …

Hoffman’s strikeout of Alex Gonzalez in the ninth inning was his 952nd with San Diego, moving him into second on the franchise list. He is one ahead of Eric Show. Andy Benes holds the club record with 1,036 strikeouts.

… not sure it’s a “fun fact” … as it says something about the starters in Padre history (a fact made evident in GY’s book, also).

  20. Should we be concerned that three of the last four runs we’ve scored have come on a balk, error, and bases-loaded strike?

  21. Jake Peavy has 921, fourth all time… I don’t think Hoffy will ever see that #1 slot. Jake will pass him before he passes Benes.

  22. RE:170.

Hello, Bryan. Are you a troll or do you just play one on Ducksnorts? Seriously, that comment sounds like it is only intended to do one thing.

To answer anyway… this is a game that will humble you in many, many ways. So, no we shouldn’t, even if it were true. And the umpire says you’re wrong about the last one and his opinion is the only one that matters now.

  23. Just got back from the game. A few quick thoughts:

–As Rich notes in #87, Jake did a nice job tonight. After the first inning, I thought he’d struggle to go five, but he settled down big time.
–It’s great to see those line drives finally starting to fall for Kouz. I love the fact that he’s never gotten down on himself or taken his at-bats into the field. I haven’t watched the replay yet, and I don’t know where that final pitch from Arroyo missed, but Kouz battled to draw the walk. I’m feeling real good about him.
–It’s ironic that our inability to lay down a bunt twice in the ninth ended up winning the game for us. I’d still like to see us work on that, but for now we’ll take it.
–Linebrink has looked fantastic the past few times out.
–I like that we managed to capitalize on both of the Reds’ errors tonight. We don’t always do that.

Aggravating game at times tonight, but ultimately a satisfying victory. Keep winning series, and the rest will fall into place…

  24. I feel dirty. That was a strike. I still think they would’ve won but … wow. I’ll take it. I’d prefer a perfectly placed bleeder or a, uh, ducksnort.

  25. Yeah it was a strike. The replay showed it, Gameday shows it and Kouz kind of smiled a little after the game when he said it was a very good pitch. We’ll take it.

Whatever Kouz was battling I think he’s over it. I don’t expect him to hit .330 the rest of the way but he’s at least going to be a normal major leaguer and not hit .110 on the year.

  26. ESPN featured the pads reds and showed that exact pitch. Looked like a strike but KK walked to first. Reds are snake bit, padres are currently charmed. I’ll take it, enjoy the off day.

  27. I really think there is a good side to all these close wins and loses. Nobody is hitting so well that they will come back to earth and a bunch of guys are below where they should be. The pitching staff is great and there is no reason to expect a hiccup.

A bit more hitting out of Cameron, Kouz and Greene and the Padres could reel off a big 15-5 or so streak.
