IGD: Padres vs Reds (16 May 07)
Wed, May 16, 2007by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Jake Peavy (5-1, 1.52 ERA) vs Bronson Arroyo (2-3, 2.87 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
Gotta love Jake Peavy’s last four starts: 28 IP, 12 H, 9 BB, 46 SO, 0.96 ERA. Whenever you’re striking out more than twice the number of baserunners you’re allowing, that’s a good thing.
Let’s score some runs. Go Padres!

If you can, check out Cole Hamels pitching against the Brewers. He’s completely dominating them thus far.
May 16, 2007 at 7:01 pm
I just finished my voting for the NL Allstar team (like I give a crap about the AL):
1B-A. Gonzallez
2B-M. Giles
3B-C. Counsell
SS-K. Greene
C- J. Bard
Out-B. Giles
Out-K. Griffey Jr.
Out-D. Roberts
May 16, 2007 at 7:03 pm
And of course Peavy.
May 16, 2007 at 7:05 pm
What worries me about tonight’s game is Adam Dunn. It seems like every time he comes to town he hits a couple of bombs, he’s overdue.
I don’t expect much from Khalil tonight. Arroyo throws a ton of breaking balls and Greenie usually has problems with that.
May 16, 2007 at 7:06 pm
I wrote Jake in as a 1B.
May 16, 2007 at 7:11 pm
5 … 1B?
May 16, 2007 at 7:12 pm
I can’t find the pitcher catagory….
May 16, 2007 at 7:13 pm
wow…we actually threw someone out..
May 16, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Nice play by Josh.
May 16, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Last Play: K. Griffey Jr. struck out swinging, J. Hamilton caught stealing, catcher to shortstop
BOO-YA!
May 16, 2007 at 7:13 pm
2: If I were to vote, I’d probably vote like this:
C - Russell Martin, LA
1B - Todd Helton, COL
2B - Chase Utley, PHI
3B - Chipper Jones, ATL
SS - Hanley Ramirez, FLA
OF - Matt Holliday, COL
OF - Barry Bonds, SF
OF - Aaron Rowand, PHI
May 16, 2007 at 7:14 pm
7 … my question is what 1B rather than, say, 3B? The Padres have a ligit candidate at 1B … which is what post #2 seemed to acknowledge …
May 16, 2007 at 7:14 pm
7: There isn’t one.
May 16, 2007 at 7:15 pm
Gotta love Josh for his acting.
May 16, 2007 at 7:16 pm
11 … i assume you hate pujols? that’s fine by me … but it seems worth clarifying … since he will be, as he should be, the starting 1B-man for the NL in the all-star game …
May 16, 2007 at 7:17 pm
14 … tell me/us more?
May 16, 2007 at 7:17 pm
12: Arbitrary. I have 5 more e-mail addresses to vote under.
May 16, 2007 at 7:17 pm
So, Cincy up 1-0 in top of first … is that game over? Yup, I’m in a pretty pissy mood …
May 16, 2007 at 7:18 pm
17 … so you think it’s OK to not vote for Adrian? that’s what i can’t understand about what you are saying …
May 16, 2007 at 7:18 pm
16: Josh automatically went to the 1st base ump for a call. However, it was pretty dramatic.
May 16, 2007 at 7:19 pm
19: No, I did vote for Adrian every time.
May 16, 2007 at 7:20 pm
15: Not as much as I hate the umpires tonight. Helton is hitting better than Pujols so far this year, which is what I would base my vote on.
May 16, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Ouch. 34 pitches.
May 16, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Are you kidding me? 2 runs even after the strike em out/throw em out? Since the game is just about out of reach, Peavy should just pitch to contact and see what happens.
May 16, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Hard to believe Jake has given up 2 in the first.
May 16, 2007 at 7:23 pm
1 … JJ Hardy is having a good season … took Hamels deep tonight …
May 16, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Two games ago we scored 7 runs. Over the past two games, we’ve averaged 3.5 runs. Come off the ledge, there is still hope.
May 16, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Crudge!!!
May 16, 2007 at 7:26 pm
27: Make that 4 runs per game over the last two games. Even more hope. Maybe Arroyo will balk in 2 runs.
May 16, 2007 at 7:27 pm
21 … if you voted for Adrian *and* wrote in Jake at 1B, then your ballot is probably null/void … ug …
22 … that’s the most disappointing thing I’ve ever heard you say, Richard … you vote for All-Stars based on a small sample size? ug …
24 … agree!!! (unless that’s what he was trying to do in the 1st)
May 16, 2007 at 7:29 pm
AG with the slumpbusting clean shaven look
May 16, 2007 at 7:30 pm
30: I only wrote in Jake on one ballot.
Wierd play at 2nd. I guess there was no contact made.
Lynch, you are in a prime mood tonight. Are you feeling OK?
May 16, 2007 at 7:31 pm
30: On the small sample size thing: the game is designed that way. It’s a reward for whoever is having the best half of a season, not the best overall player. Or that’s how I interpret it.
May 16, 2007 at 7:31 pm
30: No, I don’t vote for the All-Star game.
May 16, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Ugh. Khalil will be lucky to even make contact tonight. Would have been a good time to let Blum start at SS.
May 16, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Unfortunately good call on Greene facing Arroyo, Anthony.
May 16, 2007 at 7:32 pm
30: Also, what Ben said.
May 16, 2007 at 7:34 pm
I think that last out screamed “don’t move in the fences!”
May 16, 2007 at 7:38 pm
WE NEED BATS!!!!!
May 16, 2007 at 7:40 pm
32 … I warned you (#18) … but other than that, I’m OK, thanks for askin’
33,37 … it’s only a reward for small-sample-size performance if we, the fans, let it be! i vote for all-stars, not for 6-week-wonders. i’m not usually this extreme/fanatical about things, but i almost believe that any ballot without votes for pujols and alex rodriquez should be null/void … there’s hardly any point to even allowing other votes. OTOH, a vote for adrian might help get him noticed enough to be selected to be on the team, because otherwise only pujols and helton might be on the team (and i think helton is still an all-star ahead of adrian, absolutely no offense intended to adrian) …
May 16, 2007 at 7:41 pm
38 … amen!
May 16, 2007 at 7:43 pm
KK … hey, dude, it’s BUST-OUT TIME!!!
May 16, 2007 at 7:43 pm
personally, I have no wish to see the fences changed… and alright Kouz! A Cammy score on a Kouz base hit…something we just didn’t see in the first six weeks
May 16, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Kouzmanoff esta en fuego!
May 16, 2007 at 7:44 pm
K. Kouzmanoff singled to center, M. Cameron scored, J. Bard to second
BOO-YA!
May 16, 2007 at 7:45 pm
It always pisses me off to have Jake take a first pitch bunt. The guy can hit. Let him hit!
May 16, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Nice DP. Too bad it was against us.
May 16, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Peav needs to spend a little more time working on the bunting, perhaps…
May 16, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Credit David Ross…
May 16, 2007 at 7:48 pm
I despise bunting as much as anyone, but there I think it makes sense. You move two runners into scoring position, you move the runner to third with only one out, and you avoid a double play if you get the ball down.
May 16, 2007 at 7:49 pm
35: Heard today from Randy Jones about Geoff Blum: He does a great job. Jones and Darren Smith agreed that Blum has a sweet left-handed swing.
May 16, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Hey Lynch, Ozzie Smith is in the SD4 booth.
May 16, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes - B Arroyo 34-23; J Peavy 46-28.
Ground balls-fly balls - B Arroyo 4-1; J Peavy 1-2.
Batters faced - B Arroyo 10; J Peavy 10.
May 16, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Well Mike is certainly staying busy out there in center.
May 16, 2007 at 7:57 pm
52 … OK, I’m done being pissy (I hope) … I’m laughing to myself as I try to figure out what that means … why point that out to me … and trying to figure out how to reply without sounding even more pissy … to the point where, hey, I’m done being pissy … I *love* Ozzie Smith … I think it’s cool that his Wikipedia entry mentions his play on the Burroughs ground ball in 1978 … http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozzie_Smith … man, what a SS!
May 16, 2007 at 7:57 pm
For those of you not able to hear this interveiw with Ozzie on SD4, you are missing a class act. He is truley a jem to listen to.
May 16, 2007 at 8:00 pm
52 … I’ve found a new favorite entry on YouTube … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEkbcoF6z2o … it’s choppy, but it’s got *many* of the great Ozzie highlights!
May 16, 2007 at 8:05 pm
57: Cool link. I remember watching some of those plays. The Wizard of Oz was one of the greatest entertainers of the game. I wasn’t aware that his kid was a contestant on American Idol.
May 16, 2007 at 8:06 pm
Thru 3 …
Pitches-strikes - B Arroyo 40-28; J Peavy 65-42.
Ground balls-fly balls - B Arroyo 5-2; J Peavy 1-4.
Batters faced - B Arroyo 13; J Peavy 14.
May 16, 2007 at 8:08 pm
57: Thanks for that link. Watching Ozzie was like watching Larry Bird or Magic Johnson, they usually did something amazing every game. With all the hype over Ozzie’s glove some people might think he was overrated but he was absolutely incredible. A once in a lifetime player.
BTW, I just posted some David Wells charts at Friar Watch.
May 16, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Josh Geer steppin’ up tonight for AA San Antonio … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....p;did=milb
May 16, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Thru 4 …
Pitches-strikes - B Arroyo 50-35; J Peavy 74-48.
Ground balls-fly balls - B Arroyo 6-4; J Peavy 3-5.
Batters faced - B Arroyo 16; J Peavy 17.
May 16, 2007 at 8:17 pm
60 … interesting charts, Anthony, thanks! the data makes me think something is systemicly (sp?) wrong … the umpiring can’t be *that* bad, can it? i hope is what you say (”lots of movement on pitches”) …
May 16, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Nice play by Jake.
May 16, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Sorry Lynch, I keep forgeting you aren’t watching this. Batter squibed one towards the 3rd base and Jake picked it up and threw it across his chest to firs for the third out.
May 16, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Kouz is 6 for his last 16. I think he’s out of it
May 16, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Let Jake hit!
May 16, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Foul tip into the catcher’s mit.
May 16, 2007 at 8:25 pm
63: Good question. That was the worst I’ve seen it this year. That umpire has been involved in some balls and strikes disputes in the past.
One of my projects this year is going to be rewatching a game and comparing it pitch by pitch to the gameday data. I would have done it with the Maddux game but I forgot to record it.
May 16, 2007 at 8:25 pm
65 … sweet!
66 … KK … keep ‘em comin’, dude!
May 16, 2007 at 8:25 pm
If you’re going to bunt, bunt. Don’t foul.
May 16, 2007 at 8:26 pm
69 … now that sounds like an interesing project … go for it!
May 16, 2007 at 8:30 pm
71: nice.
72: Just a matter of finding the time and the right game.
I’m watching Gameday and the game on tv and it sure looks accurate to me.
May 16, 2007 at 8:31 pm
69: I’d be interested in seeing the results of Joe West (I can’t believe he still has a job).
May 16, 2007 at 8:33 pm
Nice DP by Adrian!
May 16, 2007 at 8:34 pm
I’m not going to badmouth our offense tonight. Arroyo has been filthy. I’m looking forward to doing a comparison between these two guys later tonight.
May 16, 2007 at 8:35 pm
that’s the correct play to make. Too many people try to get both forces. When the guy stops running, he’s dead almost all the time. tag the bag! Good job, Adrian…
May 16, 2007 at 8:35 pm
The Reds are getting hits half of the time they’re putting the ball in play. Are they hitting the ball hard? From Gameday it’s seemed like they’ve gotten line drives, but nothing really hit deep.
May 16, 2007 at 8:36 pm
After 5 ….
Pitches-strikes - B Arroyo 68-47; J Peavy 86-58.
Ground balls-fly balls - B Arroyo 6-4; J Peavy 4-5.
Batters faced - B Arroyo 20; J Peavy 20.
May 16, 2007 at 8:38 pm
78: They’ve had a few hit deep, but mostly line drives.
Adrian just hit a nice single.
May 16, 2007 at 8:38 pm
Yahoo’s box score shows that last DP like this …
A Gonzalez-K Greene-A Gonzalez-K Greene-A Gonzalez
… kinda funny!
May 16, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Damn DPs! That’s the fifth tonight. Argggggg!
May 16, 2007 at 8:39 pm
81: Gameday’s was even better because they had to write out first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and shortstop Khalil Greene every time either one touched the ball.
May 16, 2007 at 8:40 pm
After 6 …
Pitches-strikes - B Arroyo 76-53; J Peavy 90-62.
Ground balls-fly balls - B Arroyo 8-5; J Peavy 6-6.
Batters faced - B Arroyo 23; J Peavy 23.
May 16, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Anybody know what Khalil’s career average is against Arroyo? It’s got to be under .100
May 16, 2007 at 8:41 pm
How many one run games have we been in this year so far?
May 16, 2007 at 8:41 pm
re: 78.
thing is, the Reds are doing what we should actually be doing. I was always taught to nibble a junker to death, not try for the big smash. Take the bloop single… so many guys see that big fat pitch and try to muscle up and kill it.
About Jake tonight…you know what is actually nice? He’s not dealin’… he’s pitchin’. Early on he realized he needed to settle down and he has. The Jake of a couple years ago would be gone already…
May 16, 2007 at 8:43 pm
The DPs are ruling this game.
May 16, 2007 at 8:44 pm
85: It would appear his career avg is .000, since he seems to have not faced Arroyo prior to tonight.
May 16, 2007 at 8:49 pm
C’mon offense … let’s get to Peavy’s spot and then PH for him … and turn that AB in a run!
May 16, 2007 at 8:49 pm
Cammie got lucky on that one.
May 16, 2007 at 8:50 pm
90: Or we could let Peavy hit for himself and not subject ourselves to Geoff Blum!
May 16, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Lynch, it was a fumble by the 3rd baseman.
May 16, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Branyan will be the PH
May 16, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Thanks, TD, I’m on Gameday too, so insights like that are very helpful.
May 16, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Kouz!
If Khalil had Kouzmanoff’s eye he’d be hitting .320. Lay off that sweeping curve and hammer the fastball
May 16, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Um gang, I think Kouz may be coming out of it… *grin*
May 16, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Kouz ripped it into the left corner. Hoffman sent Cameron home. Scored as a E7.
May 16, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Lynch, the score came on the error…it’s a clean knock for Kouz…but no RBI
May 16, 2007 at 8:57 pm
Dammit, I gotta get up at 3:30 AM tommorow. I don’t know if I can hang on for this.
May 16, 2007 at 8:58 pm
98 … so you might have scored it a double + RBI?
May 16, 2007 at 9:00 pm
101: No, I think they scored it correctly.
May 16, 2007 at 9:01 pm
After 7 …
Pitches-strikes - B Arroyo 95-65; J Peavy 105-70.
Ground balls-fly balls - B Arroyo 9-6; J Peavy 9-6.
Batters faced - B Arroyo 28; J Peavy 27.
… bully time!
May 16, 2007 at 9:02 pm
101: It definitely was a single + error, right through Dunn’s legs.
At this rate Kouz could be player of the game. None of those were cheapies either.
May 16, 2007 at 9:03 pm
Linebrink’s stuff is looking better than Jake’s tonight.
May 16, 2007 at 9:05 pm
1-2-3 for Scott. Not bad. We just need to bring the bats.
May 16, 2007 at 9:06 pm
Kouz seems like he’s waking up. Let’s hope he continues to see and hit the ball this well.
May 16, 2007 at 9:08 pm
Tony La Russa is a horrible manager. He is desperately trying to give the Dodgers the game (with the Cardinals up 3-2) by leaving Kip Wells in in the fifth, despite Wells having 6 walks through 4 1/3.
May 16, 2007 at 9:09 pm
Giles should try hitting balls like that down the line, instead of freebie outs to center.
May 16, 2007 at 9:11 pm
I thought A-Gon had all of that.
