IGD: Padres vs Giants (9 Apr 07)
first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Chris Young (0-0, 4.76 ERA) vs Matt Cain (0-0, 4.50 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
Chris Young graduated from Princeton University. According to the delightful and sometimes accurate Wikipedia, here are some other famous Princeton grads:
- Moe Berg - baseball player and spy (one of the most fascinating characters ever to play the game)
- Jeff Bezos - founder of Amazon.com
- Bill Bradley - former basketball star, member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, former U.S. Senator
- Aaron Burr - 3rd Vice President of the United States (and answer to milk commercial trivia question)
- Dean Cain - actor
- Ethan Coen - director
- David Duchovny - actor
- Richard Feynman - Nobel laureate (Physics 1965)
- Steve Forbes - son of Malcolm Forbes (also a Princeton grad), businessman and publisher of Forbes magazine
- Stanley Jordan - jazz guitarist (and an insanely talented one at that — I know you think you’re sick of the song, but check out his version of “Stairway to Heaven” if you want your mind blown)
- James Madison, 4th President of the United States
- W.S. Merwin - Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and translator
- Queen Noor of Jordan - Her Majesty Queen of Jordan
- Syngman Rhee - 1st president of the Republic of Korea
- Brooke Shields - model/actress
- Jimmy Stewart - actor
- George F. Will - Pulitzer Prize-winning writer
- Woodrow Wilson - 28th President of the United States
Sometimes you get insight here at Ducksnorts; other times, you get whatever the heck this is. Go Padres!

Out of curiosity, has everyone who comments here read Weaver on Strategy?
April 9, 2007 at 6:38 pm
A good nickname opens doors…
Bud Black on the 1090 pregame show a few minutes ago: “We feel very strongly about Kouz.”
To which he might then have added: “”Nudge nudge, wink wink, know what I mean, know what I mean, say no more, say no more!”
Or Jerry could have replied: “Yes, and even at my age!”
April 9, 2007 at 6:49 pm
1: No, I haven’t. Have always heard that it’s a must read. Unfortunately, there are a lot of those.
April 9, 2007 at 6:57 pm
3: It’s also a pretty quick read (under 200 pages).
April 9, 2007 at 7:10 pm
Dont bring that weak stuff in here Doc!
April 9, 2007 at 7:11 pm
I think you call that being VERY careful w/ Mr. Barry
April 9, 2007 at 7:15 pm
I like CY throwing over to first a bunch of times. Maybe Bonds will tweak a hammy or something while scampering back those three feet.
April 9, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Whoa. NOG taking a strike. Don’t see that every day.
April 9, 2007 at 7:18 pm
That was a nifty play by NOG to end the last inning though
April 9, 2007 at 7:19 pm
re: 1
I read it and enjoyed it and gave it to a baseball coach I was assisting at the time.
April 9, 2007 at 7:19 pm
yes…very nice play by NOG. Also can’t say how happy I am again to have the Channel 4 broadcast on my mlb package on directv…
April 9, 2007 at 7:20 pm
not sure Barfield would have gotten to that one in the hole
April 9, 2007 at 7:20 pm
I thought the Giants were one of the few teams that still didn’t put the players names on the back of the Jersey. Is this a new thing this year or am I a retard?
April 9, 2007 at 7:21 pm
I think the Giants have been doing that for a few years now..
April 9, 2007 at 7:21 pm
13 - don’t know, but don’t overlook the possibility of “both”
April 9, 2007 at 7:21 pm
is that Gwynn in the box with the Channel 4 team tonight?
April 9, 2007 at 7:22 pm
yes it is…
April 9, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Yeah, maybe Ch. 4 is on board more now than last season. I rarely got Ch. 4 on DirecTV or MLBtv. But I would like to get Scully for the Dodgers series.
April 9, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Is something wrong with Sledge, or are they just riding Cruz while he’s hot? (Cruz is starting in left again.)
Good AB by Bard.
April 9, 2007 at 7:23 pm
15 - Hey brother, stop messing with the Boston contingency! It’s three hours later here!!!
April 9, 2007 at 7:24 pm
And 30 degrees cooler, at least in D.C.
April 9, 2007 at 7:25 pm
18 - I totally agree. Scully is by far and away the best broadcast of the year. I totally hope that we don’t get the padres broadcast for that series…
April 9, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Feel free to walk another one, dude.
April 9, 2007 at 7:25 pm
19 - either way, it’s Crudge-time baby
April 9, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Mudcat called Righetti the “Big Ragu.” Nice.
April 9, 2007 at 7:27 pm
Would like to see KG make Cain throw two strikes here before swinging.. .then go Oppo!
April 9, 2007 at 7:27 pm
I watched just about every game last year and the Padres feed was never shown on directv. I bought the mlb.com package just to be able to listen to the Padres announcers.
April 9, 2007 at 7:27 pm
Dammit. What is our aversion to scoring runs?!?!?!
April 9, 2007 at 7:27 pm
that wasn’t “oppo”… crapburgers!
April 9, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Fine. At least we brought the pitch count up. I’m sick of these 3 pitch innings we keep giving mediocre starters.
April 9, 2007 at 7:29 pm
27: I totally agree, except in the case of Vin Scully. I mean, the guys a one man show.. He’s got a drum between his knees, a tamborine on his shoe, and a triangle dangling from his ear…
April 9, 2007 at 7:30 pm
How about the ducksnorts ad during the game….
April 9, 2007 at 7:30 pm
OMG!!!!! Matty just mentioned Geoff’s book
April 9, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Ducksnorts shout out on Channel 4! Excellent.
April 9, 2007 at 7:31 pm
HOLY LORD!!!!
GO GEOFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 9, 2007 at 7:31 pm
I feel so proud to be a part of the little group here right now..
April 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm
All right, GY! That was great! Even the Book was touted.
April 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm
hey - Ducksnorts getting the shoutout!! in fact, the book getting the shoutout!!!! Great stuff Geoff!!!!!!
April 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm
I feel so proud to be a part of the little group here right now..
April 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Dude!!!!!!!!
now that is some sweet promo there!
April 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm
such a plug haha, congrats geoff
April 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Don’t know where Geoff is, but I hope he heard that.
April 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm
that’s awesome! Wish I wasn’t watching on mute (catching “24″ on tivo at the same time…)
April 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm
So we’re gonna have like 20,000 more people joining the IGD now, right?
April 9, 2007 at 7:33 pm
yep, they spent a good 3 minutes or so pluggin Ducksnorts.com and the book. Matty mentioned that he recommended it to Darren Balsey.
April 9, 2007 at 7:33 pm
that is awesome… Did you guys just see Jake Peavy getting smarter b y the second sitting next to maddux watching the game?
April 9, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Thanks, folks. And thanks to the Channel 4 guys, too! Very cool.
April 9, 2007 at 7:33 pm
AWESOME!!!!
April 9, 2007 at 7:33 pm
42 - Geoff is sitting in the booth with a gun to Matty’s head apparently
April 9, 2007 at 7:34 pm
49: That was so not right and so funny all at the same time…
April 9, 2007 at 7:34 pm
Just had to pop in–you can’t pay for promos like that, can you? ^_^
It did remind me I was supposed to buy the book, too…
April 9, 2007 at 7:34 pm
44: Really? I’m convinced that truly loyal padres fans consist of a universe about 100 persons large….
April 9, 2007 at 7:34 pm
#44: To give you an idea, we usually have 25-30 people hanging out during the game. We’re at 100 right now.
April 9, 2007 at 7:35 pm
53 - wow, better watch my language
April 9, 2007 at 7:35 pm
welcome to all the new people……don’t be shy…
April 9, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Pretty great half-inning all around. Plug for ducksnorts and Geoff and the book, and a routine 1-2-3 inning for CY.
April 9, 2007 at 7:36 pm
HA HA HA The Giles pummeling of Kouz yesterday
April 9, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Looks like you just got the ad on Channel 4. Didn’t cost much, either.
April 9, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Quite a year for the DS gang! Gaslamp, Geoff and I all got the SI recognition. Now Geoff gets some MAJOR plug time for his book! Very sweet!
Geoff, if you haven’t hooked those guys up with autographed copies yet, you kinda need to man. That just amounted to a free commercial right there.
April 9, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Geoff, glad we could get you a little shoutout. You do great work and I hope that all the people that stop by after the mention stick around for awhile.
April 9, 2007 at 7:37 pm
If you do good work (Geoff), it should be recognized.
On another topic, how long till we get our “Kouz & Crudge” tail end of the order t-shirts, mugs, teddy bears, etc.
April 9, 2007 at 7:37 pm
geoff, good work on the plug. that’s awesome. i’m enjoying just browsing the site.
April 9, 2007 at 7:38 pm
54: I think the Giles bro’s have way more fun than us.
April 9, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Hey .. anyone else here outside the SD area watching on MLB extra innings …. They have the channel 4 broadcast on ,,, I am in heaven … get to watch on the big screen instead of my computer screen
April 9, 2007 at 7:38 pm
that bit about MGiles coming at Kouz with “malice” made me LOL
April 9, 2007 at 7:39 pm
64: I’m right there with you. This never happened last year….I don’t know how long it’s going to last or even how it’s happening but I’m loving this..
April 9, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Sue: Welcome to my world. Say hello to “steve from boston” while you’re at it. lots of us “external-diego” fans out there.
April 9, 2007 at 7:41 pm
they started showing the home team broadcast on MLB.com last year .. I never thought they would have it on MLB extra innings .. wonder how they got past cable with this
April 9, 2007 at 7:41 pm
2nd highest BA by pitchers last year…at a whopping .172. In the immortal words of Clark W Griswold, “Nothing to be proud of, Russ”
April 9, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Geoff: how much do we have to invest for you to bump up the server capacity…. seems like this much traffic is going to slow the site down…
April 9, 2007 at 7:42 pm
67 - don’t forget those of us kickin’ it in the OP (Overland Park, KS)
April 9, 2007 at 7:42 pm
#66: I’m sure if they have the rights to show the games you’ve seen for the past two days you’ll be able to see the rest of the home games with the Padres feed. Every once in a while on MLB.tv, though, they will show the away feed during a home game for some strange reason. So don’t freak out if for one game you’re back to the away feed.
April 9, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Masha .. I am not that far away .. just about 2 hrs north of San Diego .. and I have season tickets … but because of work can not make it to Sunday , Monday and Tuesday games …
Kelly O’Conner .. is this Boston Kelly ????
April 9, 2007 at 7:45 pm
Wouldn’t have known about this site without Matt V.’s endorsment on SD4! Congrats Geoff.
April 9, 2007 at 7:46 pm
I so wish the internet and Ducksnorts had been around when I was exiled to Iowa for college. Hard as it is to be far away from your favorite team, it is better than it used to be.
Geoff does a great job here of linking to various pages and giving you a good portal to hit a lot of different stories. I know I’ve benefited from that…I’m gonna be trying to return some of that love Ducksnorts spreads around as the year goes on…
April 9, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Good bunt by Cain, and the badguys are a pop up away from leading.
April 9, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Mud is so smart …. how can Mark stand it .. LOL
April 9, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Doc got just a sliver of that pitch
April 9, 2007 at 7:48 pm
73: Um, it’s “Marsh”…. Watch your typing Stu!
April 9, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Here come’s Boch!
April 9, 2007 at 7:48 pm
#55: Thanks, Mark, for welcoming folks. My manners have escaped me — I’m a little verklempt right now.
#59: Yep, got it covered. And kudos to San Diego Spotlight and Gaslamp Ball for all the great work you guys are doing. Everyone, be sure to support your friendly neighborhood Padres bloggers!
#60: Thanks, Ed. That was awesome!
#70: Um, I’ll be happy if it’s only a slowdown.
April 9, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Best curve ball I’ve ever seen in my life. Too bad that didn’t seal the deal.
April 9, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Great call by the ump, and T Gwynn noticed it right away
April 9, 2007 at 7:49 pm
wow nice shot channel 4 and great call ump
April 9, 2007 at 7:49 pm
That’s great replay work and a very alert call from the umpire.
April 9, 2007 at 7:51 pm
One of the first times I’ve enjoyed a call like that for Dave
April 9, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Anyone have a pitch count for CY?
April 9, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Alright! Gotta love stranding a lead double with speed. We continue to pitch well.
April 9, 2007 at 7:53 pm
86:.. As Tim Flannery says … Good luck Thursday Giants
April 9, 2007 at 7:53 pm
I miss having Dave Roberts on the team. He was like a toned down Ricky Henderson.
April 9, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Anthony .. pitch count 44 i think
April 9, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Young- 44 pitches through 3.
April 9, 2007 at 7:55 pm
KADIR NELSON graduated a few years ahead of me at my almamater
April 9, 2007 at 7:56 pm
73: busted! ^_^ I pop in here when I can, but sometimes I’m editing and watching, and my multitasking tops out around two!
April 9, 2007 at 7:57 pm
That really lets Cain off the hook. He threw three strikes all inning, and all three of them were put in play for an out. Although, all three were also hit well, so that somewhat excuses it.
April 9, 2007 at 7:57 pm
re:90 I miss Dave Roberts as well..but not at 3 years for 18 million or whatever he got from the Giants..
April 9, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Well, that’s one good thing about having a short inning. Don’t have to listen to extended interviews with architecture school dropouts.
April 9, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Kelly O’Cooner .. as I repeat myself .. is this Boston Kelly …
April 9, 2007 at 7:58 pm
I agree Mark O.
April 9, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Hey .. Khalil can play 2nd ….
April 9, 2007 at 8:02 pm
‘Bout time they put a RJ BBQ on the Toyota Terrace.
April 9, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Sue–yes. Me. Boston. Sorry if I wasn’t clear! It’s late out here. ^_~
April 9, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Ok…now i’m hungry for some RJ barbeque….
April 9, 2007 at 8:03 pm
#101 - Darn straight! I know where I’m eating tomorrow night!
April 9, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Hey .. Kelly you are up late …
