Brad Penny was an All-Star this year but he hasn’t pitched like one since the break. He owns a 5.81 ERA over 12 second-half starts, and opponents are hitting .305 against the power right-hander. Penny has struggled against the Padres this year, sporting a 9.00 ERA in 15 innings against them. That said, he’s won 16 games so he must be doing something right.
For the Pads, Jake Peavy has a 3.77 ERA in the second half of the season. Perhaps more importantly, he’s cut his homers way down, allowing just 7 in 76 1/3 innings. His run support still isn’t the greatest (his 5-6 record since the All-Star break is worse than Penny’s despite having an ERA that is lower by two full points), but at least he’s a lot closer to “vintage Peavy” than what we saw earlier in the year.
Padres have taken two out of the first three at Chavez Ravine to reclaim the NL West lead. Worst case, they leave LA with a split and just a half game back in the division. But nobody is thinking about a split right now.
Wild card is a nice Plan B, but the division is the real prize. Time to go get it. As we like to say around here, winning starts with beginning.
Seanez – we forgot about him GY
I still say Giles runs like Fred Flintstone, but I’ll take the run.
Hoffman is my guess.
687. That is soooooooo classic. I need to put that on a jersey, like now!
insurance time
can I get 800?
give credit to the bats tonight…getting good wood on the ball
Rudy might be Boston’s revenge this evening. We need more runs.
Seanez? Really? Well, okay.
I’d rather have Cassidy than Seanez.
Come on Blummer…some insurance sure would help here!
Lasorda looks like he’s about to cough up a big wad of lasagna.
I DID reset my DVR (to 10:50)… oops
Why would it be anyone but Hoffman? He’s warm now.
707. I think Mud and Flan are going to be doing a lot more BP for the Pads down the stretch.
Does anyone else feel like they took peyote without realizing it? There’s no way this all could really be happening.
Peter, make sure to check your email. Sorry I haven’t gotten back sooner. I suck.
I would pitched Hoffman. He made just 11 pitches last inning.
Has Trevor pitched two innings in this century?
714. He could be superstitious about having to enter the game from the outfield. =)
Hoffman would be a good idea
GY,
Time to quote The Clash: Ruuuuu-die can’t fail!
Nah. Chief Wahoo will get it done.
It’s Seanez.
Oh my. Watching thru my fingers.
Using the “anyone that has previously played for Boston is money” theory
Come on, Rudy.
As long as Seanez & those 3 have been in the bigs, they only have 11 AB’s between them against Rudy
7 i mean
oh, rocking back forth in my chair
Last Seanez save: 2001.
Nice walk, Rude.
Looks like I picked a bad time to run out of Jim Beam.
Almost the worst possible way to start the inning.
can re-use Cla? please?
looks like I picked a bad night to stop sniffing glue…
I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue
or a good night to start
So much for that.
No goddamn way!
Rich and I had the same thought! that’s so freaky
Peter,
I think we can re-use him if he throws left-handed.
This does not bode well for momentum.
I knew it….Boston’s revenge.
TOTAL COLLAPSE
i echo Rudy’s comment
I’m spent.
Wow. Geez, it all came down to Red Sox players.
This makes me sick.
I hate Nomar
13-5 13-5 13-5 13-5… keep telling yourself
So this is what being a Met fan for the last 14 years felt like..
