After being shut down by Andy Pettitte and the Houston bullpen in the opener Tuesday night, the Padres try to bounce back behind the right arm of Woody Williams. The good news is that except for the Dodgers, the rest of the “Death by Spork” division lost on Tuesday as well, so the Friars maintain their 1-game lead over Arizona.

Crazy idea: Let’s win a game.

  1. Cloudy night, moist air downtown, I’m betting another anemic night with the bats. Hope walker is in the lineup, what to see this guy.

  2. Hey. Let’s not diss the spork here, that was a great invention.

  3. Hmm….let me think about this…the Padres should win a game?? Hmmm…that’s quite a radical concept…but I suppose it could be a good idea…

  4. Loretta with a walk-off double tonight … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260802102 … I miss that guy :-)

  5. Where the hell is everyone tonight?

  6. Two pitches = Two pop ups

  7. so much for Todd Walker’s throwing problems being cured by AGon.

  8. Walker’s on the board … leads off bottom of 4th with double to deep right … yo!

  9. Walker is going to absolutely KILL us at 3rd base…

  10. That said…I think Adrian kept his foot on the bag…

  11. He did keep his foot on the bag. Bad throw was negated by Adrian. Nice play by Adrian negated by bad call.

  12. walker better hit about .700 to make up for his absolutely dismal defense…

  13. Scoreboard check reveals every other NL West team won, while the Padres offense once again works to trim an opponent’s 5+ ERA…

  14. Easy, Mark O, easy … we’ve been holllerin’ all season just the opposite … I’m still feeling good about getting some offense from the 3B spot!

  15. yeah..but 2 errors from the 3b in one game takes a whole lot of offense to make up for..

  16. One of those errors was committed by the first base umpire.

  17. true enough…but it was still a dismal throw…

  18. I know, way too early for these comments, but two chances – two errors — ouch!

Take into account the extra pitches thrown, having to face the middle of the order again, Woody’s frustration (even veterans get frustrated) — one or two more errors and Walker will be coming off the bench as a pinch-hitter and Bellblum will be platooning again.

Cleveland blew the lead in the ninth again and lost to Bosox, so a Linebrink-Marte swap in the offseason is a possibility once again.

  19. why don’t the PAdres move Khalil Greene to 3b. he’s strong enough to make that throw and he played there most of his college years at Clemson.

  20. Breaking news:

Woody Williams just requested a trade to a team with a 3rd baseman.

Another tough result from a very good outing.

Who would you put at short, Ry?

  21. Klesko can learn.

  22. Can’t wait for 9th … let’s do rally caps here in the bottom of 8th!!!

  23. DR’s got his cap on!!!

  24. Isn’t it kinda late in the game for Backe to be getting Cameron & Giles out???

  25. Now let’s see if Piazza came make up a bit for the 3 SBs against him this evening … let’s not lay this who things at the feet of TWalker!

  26. OK, now let’s see if our boy Hez can launch another rocket!!! A rally rocket!!!

  27. Qualls is hitable … and he pitched an inning yesterday … rally! rally!! rally!!!

  28. rotoworld.com reported this …

Chan Ho Park is expected to have a transfusion on Thursday to treat intestinal bleeding that led him to lose half his blood volume.

The bleeding and Park’s anemic condition are still being evaluated. “He’s feeling better but he’s still pretty weak,” trainer Todd Hutcheson said. Despite his troubles, Park might come off the DL to start on Aug. 10.

  29. Best of Luck to Chan Ho…

Wouldn’t hits like that booming double from Ensberg look good in a Padre Uniform…maybe even better than a middle reliever?

  30. McAnulty, Knott, and Cust with big games for the AAA Beavers tonight … http://tinyurl.com/m6jl9

  31. Working on my Padres Report for the night… PRD fave, David Freese goes 3-3 w/ 2 2B & 5 RBI (oh yeah, he plays 3B) in Fort Wayne (he’s obviously a ways off but still…)…

    Dude’s hitting a combined .370 w/ a .682 slugging…

I’ll have the whole report posted later tonight – Lake Elsinore is still in action…

  32. Another encouraging box score by our boys @ Ft. Wayne … http://tinyurl.com/l84hr

  33. That’ll be the question determined by Walker’s defense: Can we wait until September for PMac’s call up? Look for a move by KT within a week if Walker boots another one. He values his bullpen too much to allow the extra pitches.

What was so horrible about Justin Leone? Did it have to be a left-handed bat?

Is there anything in the rule book about them bringing Vinny back? I wonder if that’s ever been done in the history of baseball (excluding Billy Martin, of course)?

  34. Just got back from the game. The team seems incredibly flat as do the fans. The team has looked flat, almost since the ASB, certainly since getting beat in that first game with the Rockies. I can’t say as I blame them. You hype the team chemistry, great clubhouse, etc. all year. Then you subtract 2 of your most popular players, without making any effort to upgrade the 3rd base position. Players must be thinking, “What is management doing to us?” Yeah, I recognize that Vinny was a mess at third, but so is Blum. Walker, though he looked decent at the plate, doesn’t look like he can handle 3rd, although it’s only one game. I’m pretty underwhelmed right now. Vinny is probably wondering why he got released, since no one has played better than he did when he was there.

  35. Yeah, Fort Wayne did well again. David Freese is completely destroying low A since his call up. Do you guys think he might be the second best 3B prospect we got? Headley is having a great year in high-A. I’d like to see him in AA before the season is over. He’s a guy we need to look out for next September.

William Venable is having a monster year as well. I’ll tell you what, we’ve got some very interesting prospects. Within the next couple of years I think we’ll see a good rise of these guys in the majors.

  36. I just realized that Chad Huffman had a .900 OPS in Eugene so far…anyone seem him play?

  37. Lynch has some friends who catch quite a few Emeralds games…

  38. Not that I mind the Walker trade, BUT if he’s gonna be sucky at 3B wouldn’t it have just made more sense to bring up PMac?

  39. I guess KT wanted a veteran with stretch run experience, and a potent bat off the bench. Walker was available cheaply, seemingly worth the risk, had lots of experience facing NL pitchers, and PMac can still be called up in a few weeks.

Walker at 3B, barring a marked improvement, will not be very reliable defensively in the playoffs, so look for some changes. As an opposing manager, I’d have anyone with any semblance of speed drop a bunt down third until he proves he can throw. Watch Tavares tomorrow!

  40. game is on TV. Talk about your 70s flashback. I think I’ll start parting my hair down the middle again. If I had any left.
