In other news, three teams are now tied for the NL West lead and a fourth is just a half-game back. For the second straight day, the Padres enjoy a favorable pitching matchup. Perhaps today they can take advantage of it.

Peter: Not free agency, trade. The Blue Jays at one point had a roster full of 3b. They gave Koskie away and paid for most of his salary. There were others in that vein.
The FA option would have been Nomar, and that’s a lot of risk. He might only be healthy now because of the reduced demands of 1b.

Bill: I don’t think I would have let Peavy start the eighth. Then again, I wouldn’t have walked Abreu to load the bases with nobody out for the big-league home run leader, so what do I know?
Not much, apparently. Abreu’s greatest talent is his batting eye, so, logically, to combat this one must walk him intentionally. It’s the LAST thing they’d expect!
