If you haven’t already done so, be sure to vote for Chris Young in the “All-Star Final Vote.” You know I don’t care about the game itself, but it’d be great to see Young honored for his outstanding work so far this season.

In other news, three teams are now tied for the NL West lead and a fourth is just a half-game back. For the second straight day, the Padres enjoy a favorable pitching matchup. Perhaps today they can take advantage of it.

GY, thanks for the link. Spent the last 5 minutes voting. Voted 35 times. I know it’s not a lot, but I believe that CY deserves to go. Sorry I missed the Pizza Feed, but Lynch Mob took pictures.

It’s cold-hearted of me, but I’m fine if CY gets the AS break rest.

As much as I wish Young was on the All Star team (and he deserves to be) I couldn’t vote him in over Garciapara & Wagner…

Just noticed, Castilla in AGAIN against a RHP. What’s the over-under on how many pitches he sees? 7?

With even a league-average 3b we’re leading the West by 2 or 3 games. With a good 3b, the kind that was available all winter…..

Mathieson – 2 IP – 18 pitches – ugh! I’m not watching, so please tell me they are at least swinging at strikes.

Jake continues to be unable to finish off even weak hitters. It’s looking like DL time.

Save on a run on play at the plate; give it back on passed ball. Again, I’m not watching, but it sounds ugly early.

then intentionally walk a guy with a 463 (!) OPS! WTF!

Jake’s thrown 42 pitches through 2 innings? Man, he really needs to work on the efficiency thing.

TW, off the top of my head, I thought the 3B free agency market wasn’t very strong… Who was available?

Crap. Mathieson 3 IP 28 pitches, 1 hit.

Peavy 8 pitches to strike out Abreu. Man, that is such uneven comparison. 8 for 1 out vs. 28 for 9 outs.

Tied game courtesy of Piazza’s single, scoring Cameron.

Peter: Not free agency, trade. The Blue Jays at one point had a roster full of 3b. They gave Koskie away and paid for most of his salary. There were others in that vein.

The FA option would have been Nomar, and that’s a lot of risk. He might only be healthy now because of the reduced demands of 1b.

I know historically Linebrink is the right call, but I was thinking Hoffy. Much better numbers; more K’s. But no, got to stick to the formula.

That was nice, my Firefox froze up and when I reloaded we had 3 more runs.

Vinny makes the over, 9 pitches in 4 at-bats. Sweet.

Game ends on a blown call by first base umpire. Victorino was safe. Hey, we’ll take it. Trevor’s first 16 pitches of the ninth were strikes.

Pretty sure he called a Padre out when he was safe earlier in the game, too. Not a good night for the first base ump.

    Yeah, us!

Looking in retrospect at the Gamecast (not following live), was it as dumb as it looks to bring Peavy out for the 8th?

  22. Posted July 5, 2006 at 6:47 pm | Permalink

Bill: I don’t think I would have let Peavy start the eighth. Then again, I wouldn’t have walked Abreu to load the bases with nobody out for the big-league home run leader, so what do I know?

Not much, apparently. Abreu’s greatest talent is his batting eye, so, logically, to combat this one must walk him intentionally. It’s the LAST thing they’d expect!

Bochy’s in-game strategery’s been driving me nuts lately.
