first pitch: 1:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Woody Williams (2-1, 3.06 ERA) vs Angel Guzman (0-1, 5.91 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN
I said, train kept a rollin’ all night long
Train kept a rollin’ all night long
Train kept a rollin’ all night long
Train kept a rollin’ all night long
With a heave, and a ho
But I just couldn’t tell her so, no, no, no
The Padres have won 28 of their last 33 games played in the month of May. Keep that train a rollin’!
This would appear to be a very favorable pitching match up for us, but this is the bizarro month of May, so who knows? Woody has a 1.72 ERA at Petco with 15 IP, so has pitched well.
Guzman has only started two games, both at home. I am not sure if being on the road will make it easier or not.
Some random pitching stats: SD starting pitching ERA: 4.46; if you eliminate Dewon’s starts it drops to 3.75, which would be third in the NL for starting pitching (currently 8th).
Which made me think about Dewon, remembering he has been good in the pen. Headcase splits:
Starter: 6.1 IP, 17H, 17ER, 4HR, 6BB, 3SO, 3.63WHIP, 24.16ERA
Reliever: 10.2IP, 7H, 3ER, 2HR, 2BB, 6SO, 0.84WHIP, 2.53ERA
I know it is lower leverage positions he is brought into, but his reliever numbers are significantly better than Linebrink’s. Only the 2 HR allowed gives me pause; everything else looks very nice.
Hensley is the reverse:
Starter: 22.1IP, 12H, 8ER, 1HR, 13BB, 13SO, 1.12WHIP, 3.22ERA
Reliever: 5.0IP, 10H, 5ER, 0HR, 3BB, 5SO, 2.60WHIP, 9.00ERA
Not really leading to any point, but a few observations. Dewon might be the real deal, but just needs some time as a reliever. Of course, he was horrid as a reliever for Tampa, so who knows. The pitching has been great, but two guys I assumed to be rock solid, Peavy and Linebrink, are not that solid. Obviously with both you keep their position, but I would make sure not to over use Linebrink. If it’s the 8th, tight game, and Linebrink has been used a lot of the last few days, pull someone else.
More random stats: Woody vs. Current Cubs
Good
Barrett, 10AB, 1.667 OPS
Pierre, 25AB, 1.180 OPS
Perez, 43AB, 852 OPS
Only others with any significant AB’s:
Walker, 49 AB, 692 OPS
Ramirez, 35AB, 669 OPS
Mabry, 11AB, 455 OPS
Guzman has never faced any of the Padres. Go get ‘em.
Just remember the Padres habit of making mediocre young pitchers look like the second coming of CY YOUNG and I dont mean chris. ha ha
Boch really shook it up today. Geesh I hate it when he does this. I like changes but these “wholesale” changes to the starting lineup leave me a little apprehensive.
anyway, Cameron, Piazza and Castilla are sitting with Bowen, Johnson and Adrian Gonzalez being inserted, looks like this:
Roberts lf, Barfield 2b, Giles rf, Belhorn 3b, Bowen c, Greene ss, Gonzalez 1b, Johnson cf and woody pitching.
Wow, where can I listen to the game for free on the ‘net?
sorry to inform you that MLB has eliminated all the freebies.. you got to pay for it..but some of the stuff, like gameday, is pretty good to follow the game if you dont want to pay the 15 bucks for the season.
Well there it is. 8 in a row with Sweeney getting the save.
soo sorry yall were not here today.
Just got back from the game. Sure is a lot more fun to go in May than it is in April. Khalil raised his BA by about 30 points. When he’s hot he can carry us until he changes his stance again.
I’m in shock & awe
On the theory that it’s never too early to scoreboard-watch (as long as it’s May), the D-backs finally lost a game today … so the Padres finally gained a game on them in the standings
Cust with HR#8 … Guzman with SB #11 … http://tinyurl.com/kkhgh
Here’s a note about Cust’s HR #7 from Saturday …
Cust’s first-inning blast went an estimated 460 feet to right field, likely the longest home run by a Beaver so far this year.
Wow, Nevin went 0-for-4 today … now down to .244 … he didn’t any May-Magic with him, I s’pose …
Right now, being a cub fan cannot be fun. Get swept, bullpen tired. Great win today; great to see some offense and Woody keep doing it.
Correction: we still have to face Maddux . Happy with the first three though.
Lyrics from the Johnny Burnette Trio, at a baseball blog. Who’d have thunk?
It’s good to be a Pads fan right now . ..
What’s the record since Mirabelli left? Is it 8-0?
NG – I think the trade was on 5/1 … since then the BoSox are 5-1 …
Mirabelli PH’d for the Padres in that April 30th W over the Dodgers … so they are only 7-0 since he left …
I do think there’s some cause/effect we can hang on him & that trade
Had the Padres never acquired Mirabelli, I think they’d obviously be undefeated.
