IGD: Padres vs Mets (21 Apr 06)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Woody Williams (1-0, 4.50 ERA) vs Brian Bannister (2-0, 2.50 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN

Brian Bannister is former big-league pitcher Floyd Bannister’s kid. You know about Josh Barfield, whose dad had a pretty nice career himself. And now for some truly useless information:

Name DOB career vs Bannister
AB BA OBP SLG
Floyd Bannister 10 Jun 55 N/A N/A N/A N/A
Jesse Barfield 29 Oct 59 59 .237 .297 .610
Julio Franco 23 Aug 58 31 .419 .514 .742
Stats courtesy of Retrosheet.

For what it’s worth (probably not much), three men hit more homers off Bannister than did Barfield: Tom Brunansky, Gary Gaetti, and Dave Winfield. And it kills me that a guy older than Josh Barfield’s father beat the Padres Thursday night.

Maybe tonight will be better.

TF: “dprat, rub what performance?”… uh, I suppose I’m talking about a 364/379/673 line! Sure, it’s early; sure, it may be gone before the June bugs appear. But for now while Geoff treads lightly, I’ll just say that the scratching you feel is one thousand and fifty-two points of OPS rubbin’ you the wrong way.

Julio Franco is older than ME!!! I *LOVE* that someone older than me hit a HR in the big leagues :-) :-) :-) I’m still young for one more summer :-) :-) :-)

Aw, GY, you got Scott Olsen on your bench (in DS#2) tonight? No guts, no glory!!! Hey, I’m hoping they’ve still go that humidor cranked up in Coors … I’ve left Schmitty active … yikes!

And while I (and others) are crackin’ on ya, GY, you *SHOULD* have taken Prince Albert #1 … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260421124 :-)

I don’t feel any scratching yet, just like I didn’t feel any when he had a hot April 2005 or a hot May 2003. If Nady can make the necessary adjustments and take advantage of the opportunities that he is now given in NY, which he did NOT do in SD, then more power to him. Color me a skeptic until I see sustained performance from him, and get back to me in August, when GY and I will revisit this again.

Don’t be surprised, though, if he has an overall poor series at Petco. ;)

Hope Beltran doesn’t go the way of Jr. They ought to nip that hammy in the bud right now. Great player, hate to see a naggin injury keep him from reaching his considerable potential. How old was that old guy last for hit the dinger?

Barfield had a decent night, eh? Reached base 4 of 6, scored a crucial run, stole two bases and had a gorgeous game saving play….Woody had a wonderful night too…

Yes, Rich, great start from Woody. I sure hope this is a sign of things to come for him.

And don’t forget that Woody’s start was against one of the better lineups in baseball, even without Beltran. This was a great win.

Great way to come back after Thursday night’s debacle.

    Think about this too:
5 IP, 2H, 5K, 0 Runs from Scott Cassidy and Brian Sweeney.

    Who woulda thunk it?
