IGD: Padres vs Mets (20 Apr 06)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Jake Peavy (1-2, 5.50 ERA) vs Steve Trachsel (1-1, 4.09 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN

The Mets come to town Thursday night to begin a four-game series at Petco Park. New York has gotten off to a hot start, winning 10 if its first 14 games of the season. The Mets are doing it with good hitting (Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, David Wright, some guy who used to ride pine for the Padres) and great pitching (what’s up with Tom Glavine’s strikeout totals so far?)

As for the Padres, they took the final game of the Rockies series in convincing fashion, 13-4, to finish their road trip at 5-4. The bats started to heat up toward the end of the trip, although how much of that is due to Coors Field remains to be seen.

Adrian Gonzalez has been leading the way for most of the young season, with veterans Vinny Castilla and Brian Giles also starting to get on track. Now rookie Josh Barfield is getting into the act, and even Khalil Greene, who hasn’t been getting many hits to fall, continues to show an improved approach at the plate. He leads the team in both ISO (.264, 25th in the NL) and P/PA (4.15, 21st in the NL). About the only guy not at least showing signs right now is catcher Mike Piazza, who hasn’t done much outside of Opening Day.

On the pitching side, the patchwork bullpen has been spectacular. As for the rotation, let’s just say you’d rather not see a team use 7 starters through its first 14 games. Chris Young, who starts Saturday night against Pedro Martinez, has been better than expected, and Jake Peavy, who gets the call tonight, looked good his last time out.

There it is. Go Padres!

  1. While Mike himself admits he isnt swinging the bat well, he did have a couple of doubles in that 11 inning loss(one of which drove in Josh with the game tieing run)

  2. do the Mets have a lineup yet?

  5. dont know about everyone else, but I am pleased to see some stability in the starting lineup instead of seeing it scrambled every night.

  6. Kottaras with HR #2 down at Mobile yesterday … http://tinyurl.com/kk43j … but he’s only hitting .244 (OBP = .367 = SLG = .463) …

  7. even with Peavy working fast. Trachsel goes really slow. I saw his start on Saturday in person. He looked okay but he left pitches up and got lit up. 5IP 9H 4ER… is a whacky line. you gotta get to Trachsel when you can and I think they will.

  8. In case there’s still any chance the Padres’ would go after Dallas McPherson … http://www.minorleagueball.com/story/2006/4/18/164412/709#commenttop … fyi.

  9. no way. McPherson has been slipping since Spring Training

  10. TV guys just said Mike Cameron is playing at Elsinore tonight and might be back in SD tomorrow.

  11. anyone having trouble with gameday audio?

  12. Yikes, sorry ’bout the hiccup there. We’re back.

  13. Ho-hum, another great play by Adrian Gonzalez.

  14. Endy chavez replaces Carlos Beltran.. any explanation yet?

  15. still no gameday audio over here, anyone else?

  16. Speculation is Beltran’s hamstring is still bugging him.

  17. heh Hank.. I’m blacked out from mlb.tv. watching on gameday sucks.

  18. Cameron doubled off right-center field wall in first at-bat at Elsinore tonight; he’s up again now.

  19. I say that … BUT

seeing the words “- In play, out(s) recorded” is a very soothing and relaxing thing.

  20. thats good news, it would seem he is getting healthy.

  21. yeah, but not when its our side batting with a runner on second..

guess u gotta take the good with the bad tho..he he

  22. Padres just caught a break. Looked like Giles was out.

Cameron scores on a Colt Morton base hit at Elsinore.

  23. How about the anticipation of “In play run scoring play”? Could be anything from an HR to a double play, depending on the situation.

  24. Trachsel, not only does he pitch slow, but he has a bad ball to strike ratio but I he’s thrown 91 so I think he’s done.

  25. Nice play by Roberts in left to hold Delgado to a single.

  26. Jake’s dealing. He’s at 96 pitches through 7 innings. This is easily the best he’s looked all year.

  27. you think Bruce lets him go after Nady-Matsui-PH?

  28. c’mon insurance run.

  29. Cameron is out of game after 6 innings at Elsinore, as scheduled. He doubled and walked in three at-bats, scored a run, drove one in. Announcer says he’ll be back there Friday night. Also, Chase Headley just made a great play. I may have to head up there tomorrow.

  30. Linebrink is getting ready. Peavy and Mirabelli are talking on the bench right now; Peavy’s got the arm in a towel — “in game mode” according to Mark Grant.

  31. if the Padres have a scoring chance here I think Linebrink will come in and Peavy will be yanked

  32. Bradford is fun to watch.

I don’t live in San Diego–I like the Padres announcing team.

  33. Eric Young, the only pinch hitter with an RBI.. get in there!

  34. Nope, it’s Geoff Blum, who hits a weak pop-up to Delgado. Runners stay where they are. Now it’s EY.

  35. at least he didnt use bellhorn..

  36. Our bench stinks. How do you load the bases with nobody out and score no runs?

  37. well so much for that…

    crap!!!

  38. How slow was EY running? That seems like it should not have been close.

  39. did Young beat that?! It looked like he got it

  40. It was darned close. He was giving the umpire an earful.

  41. Sumbitch. Home run Julio Franco. Mets lead, 3-2.

  42. Pinch hitters. do something.

  43. Kind of deserved. It should be a rule that you load the bases with no outs and fail to score, you lose. You do it twice in a week, you definitely don’t get to win.

  44. and THAT is why the mets are winning games and the padres are losing.

  45. and also I think this game has been about who can outmanage the other by putting their team in a bad situation.

Willie tried by keeping Trachsel in
    Bruce countered by putting Blum
Willie then countered by bringing in Feliciano
Bruce then counters by taking out the hot hand and making EY pinch hit there (GDP)
Willie then PH’s with Franco and he happens to hit a homer

  46. Unbelieveable. We had them on the mat and let them up. I don’t expect they’ll return the favor.

  47. I fear this is over. It could be a long series; if we don’t win the Traschel v Peavy matchup, it makes you cringe. So winnable? Who is to blame? Luck? The GM for a lame bench? Bochy for picking wrong? Aaarrrggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. there goes that top bullpen ERA

  49. That posting was pre-Delgado. Very over. Nice work by the pen.
