first pitch: 4:35 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Chan Ho Park (0-0, 3.86 ERA) vs Tim Hudson (0-1, 12.36 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | ESPN.com
Coming off their first series win of the season, the Padres head to Atlanta for three with the Braves. The good news for the Padres is that their hosts don’t seem to be adjusting well to the departure of pitching coach Leo Mazzone. Their staff ERA through 10 games is a whopping 6.67. The bad news is, the Pads aren’t doing much better at 6.21. Also, whereas Atlanta is pounding the bejeezus out of the ball (.290/.362/.513), the Padres — with a couple notable exceptions (Adrian Gonzalez, Khalil Greene) — aren’t swinging the bat real well (.239/.322/.382).
After two solid bullpen appearances, Chan Ho Park makes his first start of the season. As with Dewon Brazelton, now we’ll start to get an indication of whether improved performance during the spring is a sign of better things to come or just a desert mirage. On the Braves side, starter Tim Hudson has gotten out of the shoot slowly, lasting just four innings in each of his first two starts. On offense, pretty much everyone except Jeff Francouer is having their way with the baseball, including some unexpected sources (Ryan Langerhans, Wilson Betemit).
Go get ‘em, boys!
Giles is a god
I like Chan Ho Park.. he makes pitches sometimes, and then he hangs pitches up like he did v. Andruw Jones just there.
Park battled, then hung a bad one.
1-1 after 1 full … here’s pitching details …
Pitches-strikes – C Park 24-16; T Hudson 17-11.
Ground balls-fly balls – C Park 1-1; T Hudson 1-2.
Batters faced – C Park 5; T Hudson 5.
… I’m outta here … talk/chat/rock on!
CHP seems a bit high in the zone, and hanging all sorts of stuff. 3 hits = 1 HR, 2 doubles; not fooling anyone, but after Dewon, 1 run through 2 looks great; can DR get going?
I’ll take a BB!
Was that a sacrifice? If so, can I punch Bochy? Two staffs struggling and he is playing small ball; taking the bat out of Sledge’s hands. Frustrating.
Park needs to follow through on his pitches in order to keep th eball down.
That pitch was down, but drilled. I don’t know my pitches that well, but I thought it was pretty good. Let’s keep this guy at third? Somehow?
Dribbler to Piazza, that’s how. Get this last guy, and not horrible inning.
CHP is firing, but lots of middle of the zone stuff that looks like batting practice. One thing can be said, we are not giving up cheap hits.
Jeepers..how slow is Gonzalez?
Jinkies, he took an interesting angle in to second too but he has shown very good opposite field power.
yeah…great hit…but god…I’m still wondering how that was even close at 2nd. It was a great throw…but still..
According to the Braves announcers, the Padres had Carlos Hernandez catching last season…
Park has finished strong. .. showing some good signs he won’t lose his job to say Brian Sweeney. When Sweeney started warming up in the 4th I thought if he let that get away, then I think Sweeney would have come out.
Good job Park, let’s see if the offense can score some more runs.
gotta be happy with CHP’s effort tonight.
Yep..not a bad performance from Park… would’ve taken that yesterday against the fish..
whoops… that throw wasn’t that bad. but that won’t help Hensley’s confidence.
Am I watching the same game? Park gives up 4 runs in 5 innings along with allowing 8 baserunners, not to mention giving away the lead both times the Padres took one and he pitched well? I guess I’m just a glass half empty guy tonight.
Man I wish I had Geoff Blum’s slugging percentage in the world series.
Speaking of Hensley, the radio guys said he’s going to make a start at Colorado next week in place of Brazelton.
Anyone know who’s warming up for the Pads?
I believe it’s Alan Embree.
I dont know why, but while listening to the game, I felt that we were solidly IN the game. That CHP was in command even though he was giving up some good hits and 4 runs. Just a feeling. Havent had that lately.
hey. a call goes against the braves.. I’m on mlb.tv and their announcers make it sound like a crime of an injustice.
Damn. I cannot believe that thing left the yard.
In their defense, it was a terrible call. That’s the second straight game Mirabelli has muffed what should have been an easy play.
Geoff, not gonna lie, that liner was hit really strong.. I thought it might stay in but.. this also hurts my NL Only team as I have linebrink in the pen. … c’mon offense come alive.
Castilla going the other way twice.. good sign.
Shoot. That was a winnable game.
Is the game over? Can’t be . . . I’m doing the Gameday thing, so pardon my ignorance.
Sure was. and anyone who has Chris Reitsma on their fantasy team now sees why he’s probably not going to make it through the year as the closer.
With that kind of start by Chan Ho and the offense got off to a start, it really was winnable.
I’m also going to concede that at least Bochy stuck with Sledge but he coulda put a righty up there as seeing that the righties (Castilla, Mirabelli) went the other way and got hits.. I wouldn’t have been mad if he used EY there.. it’s just he didn’t feel like it.
Yea, Gameday users.. don’t watch the rest.
CRAP — didn’t realize it was that far behind. That stinks.
Joining long after the game is over…..
Gonzalez is painfully slow. So slow that it may mitigate his opposite-field hitting prowess. Why play him deep when you can cut off the short part of the field and still hold him to a single on balls off the wall?
Same Park as always. Sometimes wicked stuff, but somehow in 5 innings he gives up 7 hits and 4 runs. The Braves offense is red-hot now, so he’s earned a couple more chances, but how can anyone be happy with that outing?
Khalil with a walk! Hypocrite that I am, I wanted him to walk more but then I was p.o.’d when he took that backup hanging slider from Villareal for strike one in the 8th. If he’d taken his usual swing at that it might not have landed yet.
Langerhans made the play of the game on Sledge. Whole different story if he doesn’t get there.

Shoot, I never thought I’d see the day where you misused “shoot” for “chute”.
