first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Chan Ho Park (12-6, 5.79 ERA) vs Aaron Cook (3-1, 3.76 ERA)
preview: Padres.com
The talk show yahoos are hereby invited to stop asking whether the Padres should be embarrassed to go to the playoffs if they finish the season with a losing record. Here’s the deal: Somebody has to win the NL West; that’s just the way it works. You have a problem with that, talk to Bud Selig. Otherwise, zip it; you’re making yourself sound like an idiot.
Somebody has to represent the NL West in the playoffs. Get over it already.
Daily X Commentary: Nady has the 15th-best OPS on the Padres (.660) since the All-Star Break. Post-ASB, Dave Roberts has a better slugging percentage. Miguel Olivo and Mark Sweeney have more RBI despite fewer PA. It is not about a lack of opportunity – Nady has the 7th most PA on the team since the ASB, the equivalent of a regular position.
Questions for the X-philes – Why is Nady struggling so badly? Should the Padres go with Fick/Sweeney at 1B, and give Ben Johnson more starts than X, until the division is clinched?
TF- I don’t know why Nady is struggling badly.
At this point in the season, his stats are in line with what Phil Nevin had for the Padres for the season with a couple of differences.
Phil Nevin batted .279 with RISP while Nady is only at .218. However, Nady owns a higher OPS for the season (.769 vs .699).
Yes, it looks like Sweeney should be getting a bit more ABs than Nady down the stretch (even though his baserunning is poor) and no more tough righties for Nady until the division is wrapped. Although with all the call ups in September, Nady will probably get more ABs against the rookies.
As for Ben Johnson, he should be getting ABs in tandem with Klesko who has been hitting better (as of late) but probably should rest his back and knees in time for the playoff.
Chan Ho Park has more wins this year than Roger Clemens. He therefore should receive more Cy Young support.
That’s how it works, right???
Where the hell has everyone gone?!?!
I know you people have no lives, so what the hell’s going on???
Runners at the corners, Giles up with a 3-1 count, usually is a good thing. GIDP? Ugh.
Well, it already three nothing, hope the hitting is on tonight. LA is beating SF. We shall see.
humpty dumpty sat on the wall
humpty dumpty shut out the Padres
again.
What’s amazing to me is just how quickly Arizona has become a complete non-factor.
me too, I figured that they had the hitting and were getting their pitching healthy at the right time to be a problem. I dont understand it either.
but even worse, I dont understand how the Padres are even leading the division with the way that we have played. This has to be the most “shut down” team that I have ever seen. Hell the 70′s teams didnt get shut down this much.
I think if the season went on another two months, the Rockies would end up winning the division. They’re playing the best ball right now.
actually they would fall apart if their was any pressure on them. but if we dont wake up we are going to be watching the giants in the playoffs. they are playing the best baseball and they have players who know how to win in september and october. they dont have near enough talent but they seem to be getting the job done at the right time.
The Giants are the scariest team of the non-Padres, especially if Bonds comes back.
Always run on the Padres outfielders. That may be the worst throw I’ve seen all year (non-Sweeney category).
OMG, Olivo flipped the ball into the dugout without calling time. Helton scores from first on a fly ball to left. We are in complete self-destruct mode.

Making a surprising run at a win… shocked Boch would PH for Klesko there. Isn’t Ryan one of his bestest pals???
Well, that worked out just like a great big piece ‘o’ crap. Any chance we can call “reversies,” and send Klesko back up?
Hello?!?!?
Is this thing working???
We’s gonna git them Rocky basturts.
Three straight walks to start the 9th. … The Padres have used four first baseman. That’s Bochy ball.
Yo, Lance … yes, it’s working
I’m just ‘watching’ on Yahoo … tell me more about Olivo’s “errors”?
Manny Alexander? What the hell?
Seanez gets K + GIDP to get out of bases-loaded-nobody-out jam in top of 9th!!! Yippee!
Loretta + Johnson + Giles in bottom of 9th!
Havin’ Faith!
Where did MA come from? How? Why?
re: MA … per an AP story on Yahoo …
Alexander was acquired from the Texas Rangers organization in exchange for minor league right-hander Juan Jimenez on Aug. 31. He has played exclusively in the minor leagues in 2005, batting .306 with 12 homers, 68 RBIs and 27 stolen bases in 112 games, including batting .250 in four games at Portland.
This Fuentes kid has been pitching pretty good for a while now …
- B. Fuentes relieved M. DeJean
- M. Loretta singled to center
- D. Jackson ran for M. Loretta
- B. Johnson sacrificed to third, D. Jackson to second
… it’s up to Giles now!
Hello?!?!?
Is this thing working???
I would not have sacrificed with Johnson.
BG K’s … now it’s up to our X-man!
- X. Nady walked
- D. Jackson to third, X. Nady to second on fielder’s indifference
- J. Randa walked
Khalil’s turn!
No joy in Mudville (south) …
- K. Greene struck out looking
Sonofabitch.
Sorry for the lack of info, Howard, but I’m doing the radio thing from the office.
Another loss. Crap…
dodgers beat the giants
I erased the rest of this post because I am so disgusted with this team..
sure they made a comeback try but if they had not kicked the freaking ball around we would have never been that deep in the hole.
Three thoughts:
1. Fuentes is the new Don Stanhouse. Dude makes every save situation interesting. That’s twice we should’ve beaten him in the past month.
2. The play by Olivo that allowed Helton to score from first on a shallow fly to Klesko is the most boneheaded move I’ve seen all year. Yes, that includes the time the Angels’ Francisco Rodriguez forgot to catch the throw back from catcher, allowing the A’s to score the winning run.
3. I can’t believe I’m happy that Jeff Kent homered to win a game for the Dodgers tonight.
