IGD: Padres @ Pirates (4 Aug 2005)
Thu, Aug 4, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 9:35 a.m., PT
television: none
matchup: Brian Lawrence (5-11, 4.50 ERA) vs Mark Redman (5-11, 4.30 ERA)
preview: ESPN | Padres.com
Tables, we’ve got tables…
| Period | GS | W | L | ERA | H/9 | HR/9 | BB/9 | SO/9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4/4 - 5/31 | 52 | 18 | 14 | 4.33 | 9.28 | 0.97 | 2.62 | 6.60 |
| 6/1 - 8/3 | 55 | 14 | 28 | 5.07 | 9.74 | 1.32 | 2.82 | 6.28 |
| Stats courtesy David Pinto’s Day by Day Database. | ||||||||
More hits, walks, and especially homers, fewer strikeouts. No great mystery there. And the anemic offense hasn’t helped matters:
| RA | GS | W | L |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Apr - 31 May 05 | |||
| 0-3 | 31 | 16 | 3 |
| 4+ | 21 | 2 | 11 |
| 1 Jun - 3 Aug 05 | |||
| 0-3 | 27 | 12 | 5 |
| 4+ | 28 | 2 | 23 |
| Stats courtesy David Pinto’s Day by Day Database. | |||
One final set of numbers, and then a crazy idea.
| 4/4 - 5/31 | 6/1 - 8/3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage of starts with 0-3 runs allowed | 59.6 | 49.1 |
| Percentage of wins by starters in those starts | 51.6 | 44.4 |
| Percentage of starts with 4+ runs allowed | 40.4 | 50.9 |
| Percentage of losses by starters in those starts | 52.4 | 82.1 |
| Stats courtesy David Pinto’s Day by Day Database. | ||
The starters used to give up three runs or fewer 6 times in 10 starts; now one of those starts has crossed over to the 4+ realm. Also, the starters aren’t winning as many of the “good” starts and are losing a lot more of the “bad” ones. Where the offense might have picked up the starter on an off night earlier in the season, you can pretty much kiss the game goodbye if a guy gives up four runs now.
The crazy idea? Clay Hensley in the rotation. The only obstacles I see are that he isn’t a veteran and it makes too much sense. Whaddya think?

Anyone around for the early morning game today?
August 4, 2005 at 9:43 am
Hey Mark. I’m following on Yahoo.
August 4, 2005 at 9:44 am
I’m going to be doing the same thing
August 4, 2005 at 9:47 am
Listening to the 1090 broadcast. My commenting will be limited (to everyone’s relief), as I actually have work to do.
August 4, 2005 at 9:47 am
B-Law gets out of the 1st after a lead off double..
August 4, 2005 at 9:53 am
1-0 Padres…RBI Single for X-Nady
August 4, 2005 at 9:53 am
Homer Khalil. Maybe he’s heating up again?
August 4, 2005 at 9:56 am
Certainly would be nice to get him hitting well again.
August 4, 2005 at 10:01 am
No GB for Brian yet.
August 4, 2005 at 10:06 am
Shoot! Dave, wtf?
August 4, 2005 at 10:06 am
finally a ground ball to end the inning after Roberts error costs us a run
August 4, 2005 at 10:08 am
No Randa in the lineup. Is he hurt?
August 4, 2005 at 10:10 am
Let’s go, EY.
August 4, 2005 at 10:15 am
Nice 2 RBI double by Loretta.
August 4, 2005 at 10:16 am
Bats have definitely come alive in this series..Let’s hope it continues..
August 4, 2005 at 10:16 am
Another RBI for Nady. Go X!
August 4, 2005 at 10:17 am
I’m liking these Pirates pitchers.
August 4, 2005 at 10:19 am
Just what the hitting doctor ordered.
Go yard Brian!
August 4, 2005 at 10:26 am
I’m late to the party. Hope I didn’t miss ALL the fun. 7-1 already!
Another day, another line-up. Any word on Klesko’s back?
August 4, 2005 at 10:31 am
Lawrence, whether he’s on or not, is consistently efficient with his pitches. I like watching him, and he’s still a favorite of mine, even though he’s not really that good.
August 4, 2005 at 10:31 am
So far, Brian Lawrence:
3IP, 14 BF only 2GB, 3 doubles and 7FB.
August 4, 2005 at 10:34 am
I’m here too, man GameDay is a sophisticated program. I work in the Database computer industry, and watching that thing during a game amzing. All the stats and update, all real time, and a lot of it automatic.
Padre starting to hit, hit, hit…this is gonna help the rotation. For two months, the pitching has tried to carry the team and has cracked under the strain. Now that the hitting has returned, the pitching should improve.
August 4, 2005 at 10:34 am
What the heck?
The Padres just saw 5 pitches in the inning.
2B and 3 outs.
August 4, 2005 at 10:35 am
I really like the GameDay program too.
Plus, all the goodies one can pull up about the pitchers and batters.
August 4, 2005 at 10:36 am
Not saying we are a great team, but we can take the west if we play just a little bit better. And the hitting coming around, FINALLY, is a good sign.
August 4, 2005 at 10:46 am
Yes, stats everywhere all in real time, all updated as the game goes on, and the best part, free. Probably charge next year.
Wonder how they do it? Does MLB have a dude at every game punching in numbers? Or maybe a room full of dudes watching games and adding info.
Collegue here says it reminds him a lot of the military real time battle software they have now to keep track of troops and equip resources.
Its so nice when the pads are winning.
August 4, 2005 at 10:52 am
Oh, good. They got Snell out of there.
He was baffling the Padres hitters.
2.2 IP on 21 pitches.
August 4, 2005 at 10:53 am
Khalil threw for an error. Shoot!
August 4, 2005 at 10:57 am
Good job, Brian. Out of jam.
August 4, 2005 at 11:00 am
Lawrence:
5IP 6H 3K, 68-48 pitches.
August 4, 2005 at 11:01 am
two many errors. Guess they are existed about so much offense.
August 4, 2005 at 11:05 am
Lee Mazilli has been fired.
August 4, 2005 at 11:14 am
So, am I the only one who thinks Hensley deserves a shot at the rotation?
August 4, 2005 at 11:15 am
Eric Neel wrote ‘ducksnort’ on his article:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....eel/050729
August 4, 2005 at 11:18 am
No, I think Hensley should get at least 3 starts.
However, who do the Padres demote to the bullpen?
Astacio or Park?
Park as a mop up guy would be very expensive.
August 4, 2005 at 11:18 am
I don’t see any reason why not..Astacio and Park aren’t all that great…
August 4, 2005 at 11:18 am
Sweet. All part of our plan for world domination…
August 4, 2005 at 11:19 am
I don’t see any reason why not..Astacio and Park aren’t all that great…
August 4, 2005 at 11:21 am
Why not bring Stuaffer back, he and Hensley can start, and put Pedro/Park on waivers, though no one would claim them with the high salaries, cept maybe the Yankees.
August 4, 2005 at 11:22 am
Maybe we can package CH Park and Dave Roberts to Cincinnati for Griffey Jr.
Then, bring up Oxpring from Portland.
August 4, 2005 at 11:23 am
Jack Wilson just bunted for a single.
Shoot!
August 4, 2005 at 11:24 am
Griffey’s contract is too much and too long, it makes Park’s look cheap.
August 4, 2005 at 11:26 am
Goff, (that an inside joke, BTW) I would settle for an NL West title.
Mud told the story of Geoff Blum getting his first start in the BIGs. Being excited, having his family there (forgot what team) and freinds. So they announce him for his first big league AB and they call him Goff Blum. Heh. Mud tells it better, but kinda funny.
August 4, 2005 at 11:27 am
And Griffey isn’t much of a fielder anymore. He wouldn’t be good for Petco. … Bochy takes out Lawrence, but there is some discussion on whether he can make his precious double-switch. I think you have to let the umpire know before you go to the mound.
August 4, 2005 at 11:28 am
Bochy does make his double switch: Sweeney at first.
August 4, 2005 at 11:39 am
Go Padres. We need more runs.
August 4, 2005 at 11:40 am
Home run, Olivo
August 4, 2005 at 11:40 am
Thanks, Kevin. I didn’t realize Griffey’s contract is so long.
Hey, Olivo just went deep.
August 4, 2005 at 11:40 am
Ojeda who?
August 4, 2005 at 11:41 am
Bay almost caught it as it left, but he ended up just getting shaken up a little.
August 4, 2005 at 11:42 am
Hard to imagine a Padre game without a double switch.
Wasn’t there another pitcher named Clay (not Kirby) who pitched for San Diego maybe two or three years ago?
August 4, 2005 at 11:42 am
Three things:
1. Astacio doesn’t belong in the rotation of a contender.
2. Again, what in the world has gotten into Olivo?
3. I’ve been called *much* worse than Goff.
August 4, 2005 at 11:48 am
Clay Condrey. I think he’s in the Phillies organization now.
August 4, 2005 at 11:57 am
Thank you! That’s been bugging me for a couple of days now.
August 4, 2005 at 12:10 pm
Mazzilli replaced with Perlozzo. … two more runs.
August 4, 2005 at 12:10 pm
Nice Hit, Dave.
August 4, 2005 at 12:14 pm
Now, with a 9-run lead in the 9th, would be an ideal time to use Astacio.
August 4, 2005 at 12:17 pm
Jackson gets thrown out, and almost everyone else changes positions. Now Bochy is earning that extension.
August 4, 2005 at 12:18 pm
Come on, Eaton.
The Pirates are teeing off. Swinging early and succesful.
August 4, 2005 at 12:19 pm
Re: Gameday
Yes, I believe MLB does have a person at every game entering the data as it happens. I remember before the season started there was a link to Monster for two jobs: one was a stringer, who would write articles for MLB.com, and the other was for the person to track and enter the info into MLB’s software/hardware for Gameday. I applied, but never got a call. Oh well, couldn’t afford to live in San Diego on those wages anyway.
August 4, 2005 at 12:22 pm
To those that are watching the game on TV, does Eaton look as rusty.
What’re your impressions?
August 4, 2005 at 12:25 pm
Good win for the Padres.
Now, let’s go get the Nats.
August 4, 2005 at 12:26 pm
Didi, I didn’t see him today, but on Tuesday he did not look rusty. He was pumping the fastball at 92, 93 and I saw one at 94, and those were for strikes. I’d have to guess he did not have the stuff and/or the location today which he had on Tuesday though.
But a win’s a win. Go Padres!
August 4, 2005 at 12:30 pm
Thanks, Pat.
August 4, 2005 at 12:37 pm
Didi, where are you? Are you a Nats fan?
August 4, 2005 at 1:37 pm
Kevin, I’m in San Diego.
No, I’m not a Nats fan (on the account of how often the Expos were beating the Padres even during the lean years) even if I really like a lot of their players. I wish Nick Johnson is our 1B-man (even if he’s an ex-Yankees). I’d love to go catch a game there, though.
I do admire the Expos organization with how many major-leaguers it turned out over the years.
Of course, Bowden is going to ruin that. Guzman at SS for 4 years? Why?
Yes, I wish they can make the playoff one of these days, just so they can say, thank you MLB and we’d like to share our WS wins with all the teams out there. That’d be a hoot.
August 4, 2005 at 2:54 pm
Padres 3B Joe Randa was a late scratch after fouling a ball off his foot during batting practice.
Damian Jackson, who replaced Randa, went 0-for-6 and was ejected for throwing equipment during the Padres’ four-run ninth.
August 4, 2005 at 9:25 pm
I sorta like Bochy, but why wasn’t he canned a la Mazzili?
August 4, 2005 at 9:30 pm
Alderson is patient, and Towers and Bochy are really tight, but even if those things weren’t true, Bochy just signed a two-year extension a couple months ago.
