Mind is heavily on the book these days. Finished a first draft of the minor-league chapter over the weekend: 42 pages filled with profiles of 74 players. Kind of insane, if you ask me, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Somewhat related, I'll be unleashing my list of Top 10 Prospects this week -- either Tuesday or Wednesday depending on... stuff. Meanwhile, here's what's going on in the Caribbean leagues: Thursday, December 6 Late results from the Dominican Republic and Venezuela: Estrellas 2, Escogido 0 (box). Vince Sinisi, batting third and playing left field, went 0-for-4 with a strikeout for Escogido. His team notched just two singles all game, one each by a couple of former Padres catchers, Raul Casanova and Miguel Olivo. Gigantes 3, Azucareros ...

I tried to watch some of the USD - Long Beach State game on Sunday at Cunningham Stadium, but it was brutal. These kids haven't been playing for some time, and it showed. I've never seen so many walks and wild pitches. To the winter leagues... Friday, November 2 Saguaros 11, Javelinas 5 (box | recap). Matt Antonelli, batting sixth, singled, doubled, and drew three walks in five trips to the plate. Nick Hundley, in the #8 hole, went 2-for-4 with a walk and 3 RBI. The Saguaros pounded out 15 hits on the day. Jonathan Ellis worked a 13-pitch perfect eighth, while Will Startup needed just 10 pitches to close out the victory, allowing a one-out single before ...

Congrats to the Red Sox on their World Series victory or whatever. Stephen said it best in the comments: Nothing warms my heart more than seeing Tom Werner standing on the podium to accept the WS trophy. For those who may have forgotten why we detest Werner in these parts, here's a handy reminder. Aside from the fact that he almost destroyed baseball in San Diego, I've got no real problems with the guy. To the winter leagues... Friday, October 26 East Rising Stars 3, West Rising Stars 2 (box | recap). Matt Antonelli batted second and went 0-for-2 with a walk. Interesting that he bats in the #7 or #8 hole for the ...

I am gradually tracking down all the Padres' winter-league assignments. Bear with me... Friday, October 12 Arizona Fall League Javelinas 8, Saguaros 3 (box score). Matt Antonelli, batting eighth for the Saguaros, went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He's 0-for-9 with a walk so far. Reader JP compares Antonelli to former big-leaguer Steve Sax, and it's not a bad call, although I liken him more to one of Sax's contemporaries, Bill Doran, who had a bit more power. Mexican Pacific League Mochis 6, Navojoa 0 (box score). Oscar Robles went 0-for-3 with a walk in a losing cause. Robles also hit a two-out, ...
