Howlin’ Wolf and Friends Take the Fifth

Randy Wolf's final line looks fantastic, and he pitched a beautiful game, but it didn't seem dominant while I was watching. The Rockies hitters probably have a different opinion. Because my job is to pick nits, I found myself wondering why Wolf needed to throw so many pitches. He walked four and fanned nine, which explains some of it, but he also had a couple of plate appearances last a bit longer than they should have. Wolf jumped ahead of Rockies right fielder Brad Hawpe, 0-2, to start the second inning before issuing a walk. Then in the fourth, Wolf got to the same count against left fielder Matt Holliday, who eventually struck out swinging, but not until the 10th pitch of the at-bat. As I said, ...

Everybody Loves Tadahito

Says here we've been "dot-com" for 6 years now. Cool. Anyway, I'm working on an interview with Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune (it'll run on Monday), and one topic we discussed was potential surprises among Padres for 2008. The name that came up was new second baseman Tadahito Iguchi: Iguchi had some problems with a finger injury early last year, and the White Sox were looking to save money. He's a solid player, better than his stats of last summer would indicate. When Lance and I visited Peoria a couple weeks ago, Iguchi kind of took us by surprise as well. Although he's a compact guy, as I've mentioned previously, he really can drive the ...

Friday Links (7 Dec 07)

Lots o' links today... Padres set to bring back Bradley (Padres.com). The deal reportedly would be 1 year, $3.5-4 million. Or, as I like to call it, a bargain. This is still in the works (as are some other possibilities), so keep your fingers crossed. Padres have quiet time at Meetings (Padres.com). Even assuming Milton Bradley signs, the outfield situation remains unsettled -- third base prospect Chase Headley is preparing to take fly balls at Petco in January just in case. Brett Tomko is attracting some attention as a starter, a role he prefers, which makes it less likely that he'll re-sign with the Padres to work out of the bullpen....

Two Roads Diverged: Jay Canizaro and Mike Cameron

I think if I were a Macintosh user, I'd be pretty offended by Apple's current ad campaign that has people who can't figure out how to use a computer giving testimony about why they switched to Macintosh. Maybe it's me, but I have a hard time getting excited about a product that tries to appeal to my inner idiot. Then again, Carl's Jr. is one of my favorite fast food places and their ads ask me to identify with slobs who chew with their mouths open and spill things all over themselves, so maybe there's method to the madness. Anyway. I always like looking at stats to try and evaluate young players. I also like poking holes in the theory that numbers are all that matter. They ...
