September 23, 1969, San Diego: Padres 5, Giants 4 (box score) The Padres wasted no time in getting to San Francisco starter Frank McCormick. After Jose Arcia led off the first with a single, Roberto Pena doubled him home and took third on an error. One out later, Al Ferrara singled to left, plating Pena. A Nate Colbert double to left put runners at second and third with only one out. With Ivan Murrell at the plate, McCormick balked home Ferrara. Murrell then grounded to second, scoring Colbert and giving the home team a commanding 4-0 lead. If you've been following along all season, you know that the ...

September 22, 1969, San Diego: Giants 4, Padres 2 (box score) Endure the present, and watch for better things. -- Virgil (not Ozzie) In the Padres' case, they would have to watch for a very long time. Then again, Virgil had been dead for 2,000 years, so length is a relative concept. The Giants scored first. In the third, Ron Hunt and Jim Ray Hart each notched RBI singles against San Diego's Mike Corkins to take a 2-0 lead. The Padres came back in the bottom half. With one out, Jose Arcia singled to center. After Roberto Pena struck out, Arcia stole second and then scored on an Ollie Brown ...

Game #147 time:7:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Brett Tomko (2-11, 5.70) vs Matt Cain (7-14, 3.78) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com Great win Friday night (box score). Don't believe me? Look at Saturday's pitching matchup. Five things: Certain promotions notwithstanding, the '90s are not "retro," although one day they will be. Chris Young is slowly returning to form, which is good because without him, the Padres are hosed. Khalil Greene and Kevin Kouzmanoff are carrying this team on offense right now. Khalil, Kouz, Brian Giles, and Adrian Gonzalez all have a SLG of .500 or better ...

Game #146 time:7:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Chris Young (9-7, 2.72) vs Barry Zito (9-12, 4.46) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com From the Baseball America 2004 Prospect Handbook (aff link), here's a quick look back at two Montreal Expos prospects: #9: Terrmel Sledge, OF: Sledge needs to add more power in order to start on a corner. He needs to work on his routes on fly balls and his throwing. #19: Chris Young, RHP: ...he developed slowly and fell out of favor with the new regime after general manager Dave Littlefield took over. Pittsburgh traded Young and righthander Jon Searles for Matt Herges in December 2002, then ...

Game #110 time:1:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Justin Germano (6-6, 4.38) vs Noah Lowry (12-7, 3.32) pre:Padres.com, SI.com Barry Bonds hit home run #755 off Clay Hensley on Saturday night in support of San Francisco's 3-2 loss to the Padres. I used to defend Bonds back in the day; now I just don't really care. It's a shame that Bonds felt the need to taint his already brilliant legacy, but it's hard to argue with his success. More relevant to you and me, the Padres have taken a home series and are in position to sweep the increasingly irrelevant Giants. Speaking of which, you know who's an impressive story for the orange and black? Sunday's pitcher, Noah ...
