Padres vs Braves 7:15 p.m. PT Channel 4SD, DIRECTV 737 AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 189 MLB, B-R We had a great time at the Baseball Prospectus event Friday night. Big thanks to Dave Pease and Joe Sheehan for organizing, the Padres for hosting, and of course Paul DePodesta for being incredibly generous with his time. I'm sworn under threat of Very Nasty Things, Indeed (TM) not to repeat what was said, but I think it's safe to note that DePo referenced Schopenhauer, Thomas Paine, and Malcolm Gladwell in his talk. He also answered all of our questions with patience, thoughtfulness, and as much candor as his position permits. Several Ducksnorters made it ...

Air Supply or Suicide?

Reader Didi and I had an excellent time in Section 214 (prime foul ball territory) on Thursday afternoon... well, except for the whole losing thing. It was good to be reminded that hanging out at the ballpark and enjoying a big-league game with friends is way more fun than just whining about the team all the time, which isn't particularly productive or even interesting. I'm preparing for my trip up to Oregon, so this will be brief. Three quick items: I'm happy to note that long-time Padres minor-league observer Peter Friberg (he did the reports here in 2007) has relaunched his blog. Be sure to check it out when you have a moment. Another friend and colleague of mine, Eric Seidman (of ...

Rodriguez is hitting .100/.217/.200 in eight games since returning from the disabled list. Part of that may be due to rust, part due to the fact that -- strong start notwithstanding -- he's ...

Chatting with Sandy Alderson (Part 3)

by Geoff Young
This is the third of a three-part interview (Part 1 is here; Part 2 is here) with San Diego Padres CEO Sandy Alderson. Big thanks to Mr. Alderson for taking time out of his busy schedule to make himself available, and also to his assistant, Dayle Tedrow, for her indispensable assistance in making this happen. Ducksnorts: Something that's near and dear to my heart: Paul DePodesta has recently started a public-facing blog, which is really cool. When I was working in industry, that was one of the things I was trying to get my company to do externally... I've seen a lot of examples -- Wells Fargo, ...

Padres 2008 Draft Recap

Monday, June 9, 2008
by Geoff Young
A mistake is not something to be determined after the fact, but in light of the information until that point. --Nassim Nicholas Taleb Here's the irritating truth about evaluating a draft: We won't know for years how the story ends, and even when that happens, judging the draft solely on actual outcome (to the exclusion of the process that led to it) gives an incomplete picture. At the same time, process is much more difficult to observe and understand, and oh by the way, people with a vested interest tend to be more concerned with outcome anyway. What I'm trying to say is, I'm glad it's not my job to stock a big-league organization with talent. I would drive myself (and others) mad trying to do it ...
