Padres (21-34) @ Giants (23-31)
Greg Maddux vs Matt Cain

MLB, B-R
The Padres have moved into fourth place in the NL West, a half game ahead of the defending league champion Colorado Rockies. The Diamondbacks are the only team in the division with a record better than .500, and they’re 10-16 this month. Despite the Pads’ extreme ineptitude early on, they’re still not out of this race. They need to start playing better, of course, but things could be worse.
Be excellent to one another. Go Padres!

I was looking for the Pre-Game show on SD4 and it dawned on me that it’s a road game. Doh!
Re: Anthony ‘The Most Interesting Fan’ was frigging hilarious. Good one!
Why is the game being delayed?
#3@Kevin: Ceremony. I didn’t catch why and for who.
Apparently, Omar Vizquel is not only the greatest shortstop ever, but he’s a lifelong Giant. This ceremony was about 20x longer than anything they ever did for Bonds. It’s like if we had given Rickey Henderson a longer ceremony than Tony Gwynn.
#4@Turbine Dude: #3@Kevin: For Omar Visqual. Still not sure what for.
#5@Alan: Thanks.
This really sucks for those of us out here on the East Coast. Quit sucking up to Omar and play ball!
First two batters on is always a good thing.
Stupid ceremony for Vizquel, who broke Aparicio’s record for most games played by a shortstop.
OG just drilled that at Cain!
And now Extra Innings says it has “technical difficulties”. Good grief.
#12@Brian Wilmer: Agon just struck out swinging on a high and inside fast ball.
#12@Brian Wilmer: Kouz flied out to center for the 3rd out….
This could get ugly, early.
Geez, Paul, don’t take that too lightly… Did you forget someone was on third?
forgot how many outs Paul?
I’ve come to the conclusion that Paul McAnulty isn’t the smartest player out there. He just forgot how many outs there were on Randy Winn’s sac-fly although it probably didn’t matter as I don’t think he was throwing Lewis out at home.
Nice play on the liner by Bengie Molina though. A diving play on a sinking liner in front of him.
#16@Alan: When you swing a big stick like Paul does, you don’t concern yourself with the little things.
#18@Schlom: I can count at least a half dozen absolutely bonehead plays related to mental mistakes that PMAC has made this year. I am telling you – this guy needs to hit a ton to make up for his baserunning gaffes and defensive lapses.
so what is with the red ribbons tonight
#20@JP: He reminds me of the Forrest Gump of baseball. ‘Run Paul, run!’ ‘Stupid is as stupid does.’
Another nice plug from Matty for the site…love it!
#21@Sue: Friday. In support of the troops I think.
#24@Turbine Dude: Thanks
#23@Brian Wilmer: Made me remember to go grab my computer while I’m watching the game.
#25@Sue: Sue, I’m just guessing. I know a lot of us veterans ware red on Fridays to show support.
#27@Turbine Dude: wear (sp) fat fingers on a laptop.
Duh, forgot to “snort” thanks for the reminder Matty. Got used to being in the house for the big game.
Mat and Mud … since you are reading the blog .. can you confirm what the red ribbons are
Nice shot Gooch.
OG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NICE GILLY
Sweet bounce there, nice carom (sp)
Agon smokes a RBI!!!!
keep it go’n boys
It always feels good to string some hits together.
I love this outfield. Just like mini golf.
Nice grab for Iguchi there!
Nice play Gooch.
#38@Jeff: I was thinking pinball, but mini golf is a good description as well.
I don’t know why I dislike Barrett so much, but I do.
#42@Field39: because he is wierd… one day he says hi .. the next he acts like he is a martian
#42@Field39: Probably for the same reason I dislike Meredith. A personal feeling. Can’t explain it.
Taking bets now…Mad Dog for 5, 6, 7, or 8 innings?
#45@Turbine Dude: Six complete.
#45@Turbine Dude: He should never pitch more than six, unless he’s at 60 pitches or something. 80 is about his limit.
#46@Field39: #47@Kevin: That was where my money was.
#48@Turbine Dude: I’m thinking five now.
Somebody hang a star on Jody for that catch!!!!
Awesome catch.
Not so awesome throw.
need Carlin’s arm in there
They are running wild on Maddux tonight.
Thank you Jody and OG.
minus PMAC the Padres defense is GREAT
#52@Sue: #53@Field39: Agree, but Carlin will most likely catch tommorow night to give Barrett rest for Sunday’s day game.
#56@Turbine Dude: My bad, day game tommorow.
Great Banks debut for us and we can not see the game .. that stinks
#58@Sue: Fox6, Sue.
#58@Sue: That might be good thing.
#58@Sue: Oh shit, your right. I just looked at the schedule. No TV coverage. That does suck!
that was lucky
#21@Sue: Scan just E-Mailed me that the Red Ribbons are in support of “Until There’s A Cure” Foundation for AIDS and HIV in children. That answers that question.
Six innings might have been a little optimistic.
Good to see the mini-golf goes both ways, Robs Gilly then bites the home team back!!! Good thing too, that kid’s got wheels.
Maddoux 67 pitches
Kouz hasn’t had a good swing tonight.
#63@Turbine Dude: Thanks …I should have thought to email him … whats his email .. I don’t have it where I am
#68@Sue: heyscan@cox.net
#68@Sue: Be sure to mention the DS blog.
#70@Turbine Dude: you got it
Greg is still looking pretty good here in the 6th.
lol velcro man
Damn! Nice grab Mad Dog!!! I think he’s gonna go seven.
Maddoux 74 pitches
That’s all for Mad Dog
#74@Turbine Dude: Belay that. Pinch hitter for Greg.
Stop forest stop
One half hour before gametime Milton Bradley informs manager Ron Washington that he can’t play due to “lightheadedness”.
This has been a very entertaining game thus far.
#78@Field39: LMMFAO!!
#79@JP: Ahhh Milton … Have a seat sweetie
Cain’s vengence. 95 mph to Hairston.
Shrek and Gerut have had two awful at bats after PMac’s double.
Yet another quality start for a Padres starter.
And Iguchi makes it three in a row. Way to waste a leadoff double.
C’mon bullpen. Let’s win it for Mad Dog
#86@Kelly in SD: The key at bat was Scotty’s, if he moves the runner, it changes everything.
#85@JP: Cory has looked really good so far (not astetically-guy is ugly as sin) as his pitching goes.
Corey is lucky if he didn’t twist his ankle.
It is always best to start the inning, walk, balk. It sets a good tone for the rest of the inning.
Somehow I saw this coming after the balk.
#92@Turbine Dude: He is going to give up at least two more runs.
#93@Field39: I think maybe one. I hope we are wrong.
Major back spasms for me with no drugs!!! I’m staying away tonight. Advil…….Mucho pain…….turning on the TV right……………..NOW.
Corey’s lucky that last hanger to Denker wasn’t driven out.
#93@Field39: If he lost Lewis there, I would agree and maybe even more.
That strikeout was huge.
#98@Jeff: If he gets Omar, that’s huge.
34 year old retread deluxe in Corey in a high lev. situation in 7th and warming up behind him is Mike Adams. Where’s Schlom at anyway ?
That’s it. and this is my 43 post out of 100 tonight.
Well that was a rather pathetic inning. Mad Dog gets hosed out of a win again.
Time to give this boy an ERA.
What percentage of leadoff walks score ..????
Come on Pads .. go Gonzo
Base hit with 0 outs works for me.
AHhhh .. come on give the kid a chance Bruce … lol
Do you think Kouz will walk?
#107@Jeff: 50 / 50 walk or HP
#107@Jeff: no
triple fn play
%^&* &**(*Y&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&i8
$$#$%^&&*
OMG!
OMG! I can’t believe what I just saw.
How many triple plays do you see in a season in all of MLB?
Wife to me: Why do you keep watching Padres games?
Me to wife: Because it feels so good I turn them off.
Doesn’t the throw have to beat the runner to record an out?
Trivia .. Who was the last Padre to hit inot a triple play ??
WHEN I turn them off
WHEN I turn them off
Damn,
Kevin has never seen a pitch he doesn’t like.
*^&$@! If we didn’t have bad luck so far this season, we’d have no luck at all. At least the cheerleader is pitching, we’re not done yet…
#116@Richard Wade: From what I saw, all of the throws beat all of the runners.
Ah ,, Matt gave up the answer
It doesn’t matter what they %^&*&*(* do, every ^%^&*(*( thing goes wrong.
of all the things to happen. *sigh*
Anatomy of a bad year.
Their third baseman starts a triple play. Your third baseman boots a makable diving stop.
Yes, it was a difficult play for Kouz, but those are the sorts that the Padres are just not making this year.
Bruce Bochy… ‘ah told ya’, son, damned if he ain’t a pumpkin-headed, French genius.
I tell you our luck this year the Padres are the only team who culd get 4 walks in a row in an inning and not score a run
That was a nice double play. KG made a smart play with the little turn and flip to Iguchi.
#121@Turbine Dude: Kouzmanoff appeared to beat the throw at first. I could be wrong.
#125@Kelly in SD: Well, Kouzmanoff has actually been making roughly all the plays this year. He leads the Majors in RZR.
#127@Sue: Sure, they’d fall for the fake throw to third, throw to first play.
Or PMac would wonder to far off third and get picked off.
I think Kouz has done a better job this year than last. It was the juxtaposition of their third baseman starting a triple play then the very next hitter hits a tough one that our third baseman can’t make the play on. That seems to be the Padres’ season in a nutshell.
#129@Richard Wade: That’s a sight and sound call for the 1st base upm and it rarely is called wrong unless you are on Joe West’s crew. I thought it was pretty clear everyone was out. Unfortunatley.
Games like this, are how you lose 100 games in a season.
Yabu: 6 outs on 8 pitches.
They went down on six pitches that inning.
#132@Turbine Dude: I know how the call is made. It just looked like it was made wrong.
#135@Kevin: Late for dinner.
Adams coming in isn’t encouraging. At least it’s the bottom of the order.
So, do the Pads get their 5th 13 inning game of the year … or does it end quickly?
#136@Richard Wade: It’ll make the Post Game Show and ESPN and we’ll be able to pick it apart better then.
#139@Kelly in SD: It ends in regulation.
Maybe the Padres want this to end quickly. Henn is next man up in the bullpen
Wrung him up!
Well he certainly worked the outside corner on Bowker
Adams brought it.
Glad to see Adams get out of that.
#139@Kelly in SD: I am wamr and cozzy at home … got all night if it means a win
Well that went better than I was expecting.
Hairston and the top of the order in the 10th.
Matty sounds excited for the 10th.
At least the Lefty didn’t put Trevor in again during a non-save situation. Have we FINALLY learned our lesson there?!? Bonus baseball here we come, yet again. Least we’re getting our moneys worth this season. Tons of innings for mid-range spending at above average prices. I’m going to the mini-fridge for yet another affordable cerveza. Go baseball !!!
Nine more innings, boy and girls.
I sat through all of the 22 and both 13s. Missed the middle 3 hours of the 18 with errands.
Cmon let’s play 2 (in one game) again.
#150@130tom330: Dos equis?
#136@Richard Wade: And just for fun, I went back and paused it when Kouzy’s foot hit the bag and you can still see the ball.
Could they make outs any faster?
#150@130tom330: This is why my wife bought me a kegerator a few years back. MGD always on tap.
Yabu: 16 pitches, 9 outs. This team needs to get their asses chewed out. That is just pathetic.
And 5 of those pitches were to KG.
Sierra Nevada, much more affordable at home. Not that the Pads don’t get $30 from me EVERY home game. Saving up for the next home stand! : )
#154@Richard Wade: Good catch Richard. I wonder if they will make that a point on the Post Game. I’m not recording. Just relying on my tired old eyes.
Oh paahleesss, not Merideth warming up!!!!
Adams has been very efficient as well. Now let’s have OG, AGon do something, then Kouz can redeem himself.
Good thing I don’t have to get up early for work tommorow.
#159@Turbine Dude: I sincerely doubt it’ll get any play. A triple play is a story even if they just barely missed actually deserving to get all three outs.
Hmmmm, have we been here before?
Giles has been on base all night.
Taschner isn’t looking so hot! Could it be????
#163@Richard Wade: We’ll see. Watch the Post Game Show. Those guys are pretty good about nailing down those things.
If Kouzmanoff hits into another triple play I might cry.
tell me lightning can not strike twice
I hope this isn’t a triple play.
2 Triple Plays? I hope Kouz can look at the 1st pitch.
#168@Richard Wade: I might modify my television with my laptop.
What are the odds??? No, I can’t even finish the thought. Here’s to not letting the G’nts wiggle off the hook again. Get ‘em Kooze!
Kouzmanoff — bad at-bats tonight.
Killin’ us bud. Somebody get under one!!!
All right Kouz, 3 pitches seen, 5 outs.
come on boys do you want to win >>
#177@Sue: Not if it means breaking a sweat or having to think about going to the plate with a plan.
Unless you are OG or AGon.
Kouz was good for 8 outs tonight, Giles was good for 1. No, OBP doesn’t mean anything.
Bochy is managing his pitching staff well. The Padres are helping him.
#176@Kelly in SD: That’s a rough night.
I’d rather see Meredith than Henn. Don’t make me eat my words.
this really sucks I can not get my bottle of Baileys open ….
I wouldn’t even pitch to Molina.
Here comes trouble
Whew!
#183@Sue: Could be a sign…
Very nice inning, Meredith. Don’t have to eat the flat panel yet.
Classic Meredith.
Matty: “Let’s go all night.”
#187@130tom330: popped open with the thrid out ….
Probably ‘ll give you something to do ’till we get to the 22nd, or the six hour mark (whichever comes first this time).
The Giants have used 5 pitchers this game (now 6) for the first 11 innings – and two got no outs.
Thats good, now you’ve really got something to do. Celebrate or drown your sorrows, covered no matter what happens.
Wow, if Barrett weren’t so incredibly slow…
If Barrett was faster that would have worked.
This is real ‘Reality TV’ folks. No scripts here. Maybe this is why I love baseball so much.
EGon, Meredith could strike out and we wouldn’t be out another pitcher. Get a hit.
Or not.
So is it Sean Henn next?
#196@Turbine Dude: SPORTS the only true reality TV
Man o man, dudes got a knee-buckling curve ball!
Or the new pitcher from the Ms?
#201@Kelly in SD: He’s starting soon, I think?
I wonder if Giles and Adrian were talking about how they are the entire lineup.
#202@Kevin: Never mind.
Great now we will see if trading my freinds Jared Wells was worth it or not
#195@Kelly in SD: He needs to develop some speed, his power vanished the moment he put on a Padre uniform.
Baek has a verrrry deliberate motion. He is very stealable.
#207@Kelly in SD: I believe that is a requirement for Padre pitchers.
#163@Richard Wade: It’s going to be show in Plays of the Game but not covered in Scanlaysis. Not sure if it will be shown in slo-mo.
And a very nice curveball.
Baek is no “Loser.”
According to the TV, he can hit 93 also. If he can be consistent with that curve and the 93 mph fastball, the Padres got something off the scrapheap again.
Well, this said he might start soon, but I guess not:
http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080528&content_id=2789765&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd
Back to the top of the lineup. Cmon, just Gerut or Iguchi get on for Giles and AGon.
The only four hitters who have done anything are up for the Padres.
#213@Kevin: The guys at USS Mariner said he was better as a starter, not as a reliever. Maybe long relief will suit him – or just pair him with Ledezma. One of them ptiches the first four innings, the other guy gets the next four.
Time for the ORANGE CRUSH.
OG!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, AGon gets the intentional pass and its up to Kouz. Do we see another DP in the making?
come on …. LETS GO PADRES
Kmon Kouz, Kome (K)Through
#217@Masticore317: Where the hell you been all night, dude?
Noooooooo, not Trevor yet! Only if we get a run here. C’mon Kooze, you gotta get one tonite.
#222@Turbine Dude: I know, I show up at 2 AM EST!
Base hit please Kouz!
Cox4 just showed the Padres bench and everyone just has vacant stares except Bell. It’d be nice if it looked like they cared.
At least it wasn’t a double play…
In-field fly rule. Dammit.
KG the strike out kid
Greene is gonna screw this up somehow.
Khalil needs to get a hit and take care of business.
Our only hope is he’ll walk… and he did! Pads take the lead!!!
yes … now lets get one more ???
Greene: Mr. Plate Discipline.
Nothing apectacular, but I’ll take it. Sputter, sputter, ehhhhhhh.
Barrett takes one for the cause!!!
Nice Mudd “Hey got a rally going!” ROTFLOL!!!
That walk and HBP were the first times the 5-7 guys reached base tonight.
That Giants pitcher wanted to give up some runs, and the Padres obliged.
2 run lead, what a rally. Lets blow this one wide open.
Matty also had a “Hallelujah” after Greene’s walk.
Huber just suprised the West.
So, will we still see Hoffy in bottom of 13th?
#242@LynchMob: Isn’t he the only guy left?
#242@LynchMob: I wouldn’t be suprised.
Blown it open! Worth the wait. Pretty solid baseball game until the meltdown in the top13. Think we can hold a 4+ run lead through the bottom of the inning? I’m betting it happens. Keep it real Padre fans, good times tonite.
ring the bells
#244@Turbine Dude: I think he is.
#246@Sue: I think that’s only in a save situation.
This is my 70th post tonight and I think Trev is gonna get ‘er done!
Hoffy pitching for 2nd night in a row … but he only threw 7pitches last night … and he’s got a 4-run lead to work with … facing 9/1/2 in the lineup … should be good to go … but he’ll be unavailable for tomorrow’s game …
#248@Kevin: OH I know ,,, just miss the bells so much I am playing them in my head ….
#248@Kevin: and ahhh, home games! Ring ‘em anyway. We need the mojo.
Oh Matty …. you made me choke on my Baileys … Randel White
Lotta hustle by Kouz there.
One more strike!!!
Fun game.
That foul ball was just outside Kouzmanoff’s zone.
good night boys ….
I can sleep a happy man.
Holy Santa Maria! What a game!
we needed this. Got some good teams coming in the next homestand. We need momentum.
#255@Turbine Dude: you win, 75+ posts tonite. Keep it up, must be good luck. Night Padre fans, baseball in 13 hours.
MLB’s GameDay said that none of Trevor’s first 10 pitches were changeups … seemed to work tonight … 13 pitches … 1-2-3 inning … that’s success in my book …
#260@Rich Campbell: Other than PMacs’ mistake, I think the team played solid ball tonight.
Black’s bullpen was better. Padres relievers retired the last 17 batters they faced.
Hoffman: 13 pitches, 2 Ks in the 13th, lowered ERA to 4.34.
Baek gets the win. Struck out the side in the 12th.
Down on the Farm (preview) … Cedric (the Great) with another good night for the Storm Boyz …
http://tinyurl.com/5xcyjv
… 2-for-4 including a double and 3 RsBI in 11-3 win …
#264@Kevin: Are you sure the Giants’ offense wasn’t worse?
#261@130tom330: This was the first time I counted only because I noticed the dominance of my avatar. Maybe I should just STFU. Sorry, I get excited when the team plays well.
#265@LynchMob: A possible promotion for Cedric?
No no, not a problem. Somebody’s gott#267@Turbine Dude: No, no, not a problem. Someone’s gotta keep it going. Appreciate the effort. Like I said, it’s obviously good luck, keep it up.
Padres have won six of their last 10 and four of their last five.
1.5 games behind the Giants.
Well that was nice win. The pitching was very good. The hitters finally came through. Those were Huber’s first RBI since the 3 run jack off Randy Johnson on April 20.
Only 1.5 games out of 3rd. Damn this division blows. C’mon Pads, sweep the Giants into 4th.
#271@Kelly in SD: thought you turned the game off 200 comments ago… worth the stick with it tonite. : )
After tonight, Giles is hitting .300/.398/.440. He’s having a great season, about the same one as Gonzalez, but most people will never notice, because of his HR and RBI numbers.
But he’s having a great year for a lead-off man.
#139@Kelly in SD: Way to call it!
#275@Stephen: You just made me scroll all the way back. But, damn if Kelly didn’t call it!
Kelly, who do you have to win the Super Bowl and the Bellmont Stakes?
#276@Turbine Dude: Sorry, the picks for those?
No, I kept the game on – though I forgot to record Battlestar Galactica. I was trying to reference the old “Why do you keep banging your head against the wall? Because it feels so good when I stop.” line.
#275@Stephen: It was just a feeling. After the triple play, I just had a feeling that the hitters just were not going to come through.
#276@Turbine Dude: Belmont? I don’t follow horse racing too much, but I’d love to see another triple crown horse. There were 3 by the time I was 7, then nothing.
Super Bowl? Damn – my heart says San Diego. My head says New England. They have the two easiest schedules in the league. Both of their combined opponent’s winning percentages are about .400.
DePo begins to discuss the draft …
http://itmightbedangerous.blogspot.com/2008/05/draft-1.html
GY … just had a post eaten by the spam filter … with link to DePo’s blog … which is about the draft …
A nice Chase Headley mention in BA’s PHS “in the team photo” section today …
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-hot-sheet/2008/266213.html
AP note: Jake Peavy, who is on the disabled list with a swollen right elbow, played long toss and the team is hopeful he can throw off a mound Sunday. By next week, he could have a simulated game or head out for a rehab outing.
