The Padres have moved into fourth place in the NL West, a half game ahead of the defending league champion Colorado Rockies. The Diamondbacks are the only team in the division with a record better than .500, and they’re 10-16 this month. Despite the Pads’ extreme ineptitude early on, they’re still not out of this race. They need to start playing better, of course, but things could be worse.

Be excellent to one another. Go Padres!

Apparently, Omar Vizquel is not only the greatest shortstop ever, but he’s a lifelong Giant. This ceremony was about 20x longer than anything they ever did for Bonds. It’s like if we had given Rickey Henderson a longer ceremony than Tony Gwynn.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Paul McAnulty isn’t the smartest player out there. He just forgot how many outs there were on Randy Winn’s sac-fly although it probably didn’t matter as I don’t think he was throwing Lewis out at home.

Nice play on the liner by Bengie Molina though. A diving play on a sinking liner in front of him.

    Anatomy of a bad year.

Their third baseman starts a triple play. Your third baseman boots a makable diving stop.

Yes, it was a difficult play for Kouz, but those are the sorts that the Padres are just not making this year.

#121@Turbine Dude: Kouzmanoff appeared to beat the throw at first. I could be wrong.

  131. Kelly in SD
    Posted May 30, 2008 at 9:51 pm | Permalink

I think Kouz has done a better job this year than last. It was the juxtaposition of their third baseman starting a triple play then the very next hitter hits a tough one that our third baseman can’t make the play on. That seems to be the Padres’ season in a nutshell.

Only 1.5 games out of 3rd. Damn this division blows. C’mon Pads, sweep the Giants into 4th.

After tonight, Giles is hitting .300/.398/.440. He’s having a great season, about the same one as Gonzalez, but most people will never notice, because of his HR and RBI numbers.

But he’s having a great year for a lead-off man.

#275@Stephen: You just made me scroll all the way back. But, damn if Kelly didn’t call it!

Kelly, who do you have to win the Super Bowl and the Bellmont Stakes?

No, I kept the game on – though I forgot to record Battlestar Galactica. I was trying to reference the old “Why do you keep banging your head against the wall? Because it feels so good when I stop.” line.

#275@Stephen: It was just a feeling. After the triple play, I just had a feeling that the hitters just were not going to come through.

#276@Turbine Dude: Belmont? I don’t follow horse racing too much, but I’d love to see another triple crown horse. There were 3 by the time I was 7, then nothing.
Super Bowl? Damn – my heart says San Diego. My head says New England. They have the two easiest schedules in the league. Both of their combined opponent’s winning percentages are about .400.

AP note: Jake Peavy, who is on the disabled list with a swollen right elbow, played long toss and the team is hopeful he can throw off a mound Sunday. By next week, he could have a simulated game or head out for a rehab outing.
