This is Part 12 of a 13-part series examining the 65 men who have collected exactly one hit as a member of the San Diego Padres. The current installment features a former top pitching prospect who never made it, a fine reliever finishing his career in San Diego, another who kept the Padres from potentially drafting Rafael Palmeiro, another who once was traded for Phil Plantier, and a man who beat Phil Niekro in his first big-league start. Great Pitchers Duels in Padres History: Andy Benes vs Bret Saberhagen, 7/15/94
These were tough times for the Padres and for baseball. On a local level, then-owner Tom Werner had sold all his top-name players in 1993. The following year, the team sputtered and so did MLB, thanks to a player’s strike that denied Tony Gwynn a shot at becoming baseball’s first .400 hitter since Ted Williams and that caused the first World Series cancellation in 90 years. Me, Elsewhere: How Ducksnorts Got Started, Thoughts on New Media, and More
I’ve done a Q & A about blogging, new media, and what not with online friend Rolin, whom I’ve known on the interwebs for many years. I recognize that this stuff may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he asked great questions and I think it makes for a cool read, although I’m biased. Continue reading ›
One-Hit Wonders: Ronn Reynolds to John Scott
This is Part 11 of a 13-part series examining the 65 men who have collected exactly one hit as a member of the San Diego Padres. The current installment features a former college teammate of Kevin McReynolds, one of the three 1989 18th-round picks who played for the Padres, a failed catching prospect, a player who wore Willie McCovey’s “retired” no. 44, and a man who ran better than he hit. Tuesday Links (1 Feb 11)
Today’s links are a little sad but will get over it…
- Ted Williams Chapter SABR Day Recap (Padres Trail). Mike goes into greater detail than I did. Fun stuff.
- Going gray (Woe, Doctor!). Here’s another vote against the new Padres uniforms.
- Prospect talk (Inside the Padres). Tom Krasovic talked to Padres prospects about media relations. I like that the team is having an actual respected member of the media talk to their kids. That’s pretty forward thinking.
- Concern About the Rotation (Friar Forecast). More depth would be nice. Maybe that’s why the Padres claimed right-hander Samuel Deduno off waivers from Colorado. Deduno turns 28 in July and has averaged 10 K/9 in 633 minor-league innings. Is he any good? Hey, someone has to replace Radhames Liz.
- Previewing the 2011 Missions: Batting (Friar Forecast). Their home park notwithstanding, this team should score some runs. Drew Cumberland, Jaff Decker, and Anthony Rizzo are the big-name prospects, but Vince Belnome, Blake Tekotte, and Cody Decker can hit, too.
- Customizable Heat Maps! (FanGraphs). This looks cool… or warm.
- Glaus not retired, but out for start of ’11 (FOX Sports). The pride of Carlsbad is taking a break. [h/t BBTF]
- Position Players by WAR: Expansion Era (FanGraphs). Joshua Maciel’s latest includes Ducksnorts fave Gene Tenace.
- Dodgers Divorce Trial May Be Delayed a Year, Jamie McCourt’s Lawyer Says (Bloomberg). Geez, it’s like waiting for Boston’s third album. What a mess. [h/t BBTF]
- This is the title of a typical incendiary blog post (Coyote Crossing). This has nothing to do with baseball but it’s too full of awesome… the comments will have you in stiches… you know, if you go for that sort of thing.
Thank You, Rob Neyer; Best of Luck
In case you missed it, Rob Neyer has left ESPN after 15 years. I’ve enjoyed and admired Rob’s work more than I can say, and I’m sorry to see him go.
Rob has been a great supporter of Ducksnorts, from letting me ask him a bunch of questions in 2008 to bringing my humble blog into ESPN’s SweetSpot network this past season.
Thanks, Rob, for everything. It has been an honor and a pleasure. I wish you well in whatever the future may hold.

- Will Leitch (I attended the conference Leitch mentions. That’s the first time I spoke with Neyer in person. It was, as Leitch indicates, pretty cool.)

Stuff I Learned at SABR Day in San Diego
I’ve been a SABR member for a few years but never made it to a meeting until this past weekend. When I wondered aloud on Twitter what took me so long, one person quipped, “Because they’re at 9 a.m. on a Saturday.”
Yeah, that might have something to do with it.
Now that I’ve been, though, I’m convinced that sleep can wait its turn. The entire program lasted four hours, but I could have stayed all day listening to stories. I cannot remember the last time I geeked out that hard. Continue reading ›
