first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Chris Young (3-2, 3.47 ERA) vs Jarrod Washburn (2-5, 3.91 ERA)
previews: Padres.com
The notion that a “natural rivalry” exists between these two teams might be more farcical than the notion that Ichiro Suzuki is a better player than Tony Gwynn was in his day. Then again, it might not be. I haven’t seen a reliable metric for such things.
Eric Young. can you please get into coaching? I say so that we could see Ben Johnson get this start rather than someone who’s hitting .192 v. LHP..
Also Josh Bard feelin the love, goes from hitting 4th twice to hitting 9th.
Ben Johnson will likely start today. For Portland. P-Mac anyone?
true but McAnulty is a tweener type but it’d be good for him to get a start.. it couldhappen this weekend ….again.. I think you could give Roberts a few starts against lefties just to see how he does. He’s been playing well lately.
Mlb.tv is showing hte mariners screen, is this game not on CH4 or something?
It’s on Channel 4. But right now it’s not worth watching. Young isn’t fooling anyone.
alrite Geoff, You better chec k that attitude!
We cant afford to have you getting down on us..
here they come..fighting back..
the homers were all solo jobs on fat pitches instead of walking someone..
Sorry, Hank, long week at work. It’s worth watching now.
vinnie starts a rally and scores…
ey takes one for the team..
come on cammy
just teasin ya Geoff, I knew you really wasnt down on us..
But they do put us to the test, dont they?
come on Brian..here is ur chance
do ur thing and we are tied..
Oh boy, I guess that’s why you don’t run on Suzuki.
dumb…dumb…dumb…
we gotta know better than to run on ichiro with piazza comeing up….chit!!!
Would it be wrong to call Bard’s swing “poetic”?
oh heck no. that was a thing of beauty..
but why cassidy?
im getting a bad feeling about this..and we dont have a ten run lead this time..
Our opponents finally dug up their minor league scouting reports on Cassidy. Sure there was the error, but he’s getting hit.
good damage control by embree…again
Jim Brower, ladies and gentlemen. Not Brian Sikorski. Brower, the pitcher released by the Orioles.
hmmmm, that game didn’t go so well. Ordinary pitching and a costly error. what’s with the damned errors. Hate errors.
maybe they need more infield practice during BP
I also want to ask rhetorical sarcastic question:
really?
does Eric Young have to be on the team? I mean he is player/coach.. but can’t he just be the 2nd bench coach now… doesn’t he know he could be hurting the organization…
I only say could be because I’m not sure if Johnson would get enough starts to grow or that he’s starting to become like XNady in that Boch just doesn’t want to play him..
Yes, some painful errors, but those are going to happen. Like defects on an assembly line. You can engineer to minimize them, but you cannot stop them. Things that you can control though, drive me nuts. Here are some things that baffle me, several already mentioned.
Why Brower? Whose idea is this? He is proving he cannot get anyone out. This could have been a nailbiter, but instead was a comfortable win for the M’s. Why toss away games like this?
Why EY after Washburn is out? Why EY at all, but after Washburn is out, why not Roberts? Is he hurt? Giving away outs like this kills me. And, that non-throw from left, perhaps allowing another run.
Why Castilla after Washburn is out? Vinny is a rightie and can still do OK against fastball pitchers, so the start against Washburn seems OK. But Blum has been sweet batting from the right side, why not him?
Even with the errors, CY not having good command, we could have pulled this out, but not with 2 AB’s by EY against righties and 1 AB by Vinny against a leftie and not with Brower. Am I missing something? Like the armchair guy doesn’t know the rules, of when you give a marginal player a start you stick with them through the game no matter what?
Watching Nady thrive elsewhere really is shining a big light on Bochy’s veteran bias or affinity for certain players no matter how they are doing. EY may have some juice in him, but does not warrant the time he gets. He seems OK with Green and Barfield, but this kills me. We have team that can play well but has a thin, thin margin for error and Bochy lets his biases erode that thin margin way too often. So frustrating.
That play by Ichiro was sick. When it was setting up, knowing Barfield is at third, I was thinking, “Why is he even throwing to the plate?” I did not think it would be close. What a throw, arguably the best I have ever seen from the outfield. Giles fly was reasonably deep.
Wow. That throw by Ichiro was awesome.
Good play overall. Must send Barfield at the point.
Johjima is certainly tough unlike the unnamed someone from the playoff last season.
