Happy Easter! If you’re doing the egg thing, be sure to remember where you’ve hidden them all.

Was Piazza scratched or is Bochy on crack? …. Rob Bowen, power hitter, hits fourth. (???)
Our first LOB of the day, nice. Atl homer, nice. And woody with a knuckleball. Cool.
My kids found all the eggs the Ester Bunny hide and only needed a few hints. Now we are all on a sugar high. Wheeee!
Sigh. I suppose it’s too early to say it’s going to be a long season…..
Cameron will help but, we are not looking too good in all facets of the game. And for Gods sake, don’t hit it anywhere near Andrew Jones!
Happy Easter, Brian Giles!
Rally!
Maybe the bully chink in Atls armor.
make him throw you a strike. Tie game. Happy Easter.
Man, the homer Brave telecast is really getting on Langerhans. (whom I like.)
Good to see the Padres get a lead.
Dont look now but we have won both of Woody’s starts. Both times to snap a losing streak. Lucky charm?
Any idea why Cox pulled Thompson? He was only on 74 pitches or something like, mowing down Padres like moles in Whack-A-Mole. I will take it. Hoffman has to have one of the best raw stuff to success ratio in the big leagues. 84-88 fastball, so-so curve and a wicked change. Just shows how if you set up off on very good pitch, you can be very successful. Go Pads!
I am fearful of the season. Starting pitching looks weak, though Woody and CHP had decent outings. Getting Dewon out of the rotation ought to help. The ‘pen looks pretty good; as with last year, no hitting, even worse. I took a look at team net OPS (hitting OPS less pitching allowed OPS), and it is pretty grim:
Bottom Teams:
KCA: -.214
WDC: -.161
SDG: -.146
SFN: -.115
SEA: -.100
The mean for MLB is, not surprisingly, .000 with a standard deviation of .108, so the Padres are one of three exceptionally poor performing teams. Our record is stronger than our performance.
The hope is that our performance steps up and maybe this net OPS is driven by the Rockies series, so we will have to see. But bad company to have with us so far.
Offense? Is that what Nady(.366 3hr 6rbi) and Nevin(.273 3hr 12rbi) took with them?
Great win for the Pads today. I can’t wait for Cameron to come back, they need him soooo badly.
Here’s a blurb from Jayson Stark on the Pads’ early-season issues.
San Diego Padres
The verdict: In trouble
If you missed the Padres’ episode of “Extreme Makeover” this winter, here’s your rundown: This team made seven trades, two waiver claims, 11 major-league free-agent signings, nine minor-league-contract free-agent signings, one Rule 5 draft pick and one cash deal. So 17 of the 25 players on the roster this Opening Day weren’t there last Opening Day. And no one is sure how to assess a team with a 5.71 team ERA and only seven homers by the whole lineup in its first seven games.
The biggest worry, after an opening weekend in which this team gave up 32 runs in three games to Colorado: “I don’t think they have enough pitching,” said one GM. “Their pitching is already short. What happens if they have a big injury?”
Nady had a good April last year, too. He’s still not drawing walks, and his lack of selectivity is what hurt him last year. Then again, in that lineup he’s going to see fastballs.
We only have three regulars with OBPs over 330. Barfield, Castilla at 282, Sledge, Piazza, and Greene even lower than that. You cannot generate offense making outs 75% of the time. Unfortunately, several of those players are capable of staying under 300 all year.
