IGD: Padres vs Giants (27 Sep 2005)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Adam Eaton (10-5, 4.18 ERA) vs Brett Tomko (7-15, 4.48 ERA)
preview: Padres.com

I’m kind of at a loss for words today. Actually, that’s not true. I’ve got plenty of words but I don’t care to use most of ‘em.

From where I was situated last night, I thought that Brian Giles had made the catch to close out the victory. Our section actually started celebrating.

Maybe everyone is right. Maybe we really do suck. Give us bonus points for self-realization. That’s good karma, right?

Right now, I can’t decide whether I hate the Giants or the Padres more. How many times can the Pads jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first, only to pack it in the rest of the way? How many times can they take bad hacks ahead in the count against lousy pitchers?

Monday night was a statement game. Unfortunately, the statement the Padres made was, “Welcome to San Diego, the division is yours for the taking.”

I still have more words. I’ll stop now before things get ugly.

  1. I was at the game with the wife kids. When Klesko jacked in the early part of the game, I thought, hey we are going to have some offense. Then nothing, zippo for inning after inning. We left in the seventh due to it being a school night and partly out of boredom. Watched the rest of the debacle on TV.

Coupla notes: Sat in high righ field but is wasn’t bad, lots to look at but a little cold. Parked on third street on the street, which cost about $3 in quarters. Hit The Field for a coupla pints and an Irish Burger (they were out of veggy burgers much to my happiness and my wife’s crankiness, we eat vegan most of the time. NIce to get a burger every now and then. She had a salad). Watched the Standley Marching Band at the Park, the greatest middle school band ever. We booed Barry and called him a steriod freak. Daddy, whats a steriod?

All in all, a fun evening, except for one lousy thing. A completely boring game. Peavy was peaving them, but once again, we couldn’t sustain a rally, even with the crazy lineup.

Goff, were you at the game? I didn’t see you.

Hey, which mediocre team wants the NLW?

Secretly, there is a part of me that wants the Padres not to win the NLW so they will reason to dismantle this team and biuld one that can hit line drives.

But watch, they’ll win tonight and we’ll all be excited again.

  2. The 2-2 pitch to Tino Martinez is burned into our memory forever.

Let’s hope the memory of Giles’ non-catch stops burning soon.

  3. It is, Eric … IT IS!!! THAT WAS STRIKE 3!!!! WE KNOW IT WAS STRIKE 3!!!!!!!!

Gah, this is getting out of hand …

  4. PM: I was in left field, SRO, with all the drunks. It was great up until the last part. Guys were riding Bonds hard out there. Two best things I heard:

“Hey Barry, let’s go to TJ after the game and do some Vitamin B shooters.”

And then there was a group that would shout out “Marco” and a bunch of others answered “Balco” instead of “Polo.”

We really need to win now, because our window is closing and I’m not talking about this year. If we don’t clinch within the next few days, I don’t like our chances to clinch before, say, 2007.

But we have all off-season to discuss that. Hopefully it will be after some playoff games.

  5. Post All Star stats:

SD: 566 H (2nd lowest), 241 RBI (2nd lowest), .699 OPS (3rd lowest after SF and Nats), 169 XBH (lowest).
And that’s with Brian Giles in the line up who happened to have had 69 H, 18 XBH, 32 RBI, .870 OPS in that period.
If the rest of the lineup are not going to hit, we’ll be screwed.

The Giants who are in front of us in XBH (by 13) actually have had a lower OPS (.686) and RBI (230). They also have scored the fewest (242 R vs. 252 R for the Padres).
So, we definitely should beat that team if only we would just hit a bit more.
No more of this shitty hitting draughts for 3 innings/more.

  6. Any more firework miscues will drive me off the edge.

    This I swear to you.

  7. Hey y’all, don’t worry. I received my playoff tickets yesterday so we’re all set. :-) Just trying to lighten things up. I feel your pain though. It was a heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, devastating loss. Tonight is another night and another game. Let’s Go Padres!

  8. Randy Winn accidentally knocked the ball out of Randa’s glove while avoiding a tag. we’re talkin hand in glove, pushing the ball out. What’s the rule on that?

Grand Slam Ramon!!! Seven ribbies for Ramon at Coors Field Pacific!!!!

  10. Ramon got a little of that one.

  11. That’s a good question, Eric. Y’know, I didn’t like Randy Winn before he started reaching into our team’s gloves and knocking the baseball out of them.

  12. This is my first time seeing Hensley pitch. Boy can he hit his spots. Or, at least today he is. What a contrast to Eaton earlier today. And I didn’t know his stuff was that good either. 2-seamer has pretty good bite at 92mph.

  13. Hensley has been excellent since his call-up. Only Linebrink has a better DERA.

  14. The rule on that is that you can’t do it. Remember A-Rod in last season’s playoffs.

Not to bring heat, Geoff, and I’m probably saying this only because we won tonight, but if the ball stays in Giles’ glove, then it’s the Padres’ play of the season and you would have only positive things to say. So it was one of those game-of-inches things.

But we won tonight, so it’s all good. And what do I know, I can’t even keep my site updated these days.

    Go Padres!

  15. Kevin: You raise a good point about that potentially being the play of the season. I think Funkinstein had it – the fireworks were just salt in the wound. That was as deflated as I’ve ever felt at a Padres game. We had the game won and we gave it away. And it never should have come to that in the first place.

Anyway, as you say, after a victory it’s all good. One more win and it’s even better. :-)
