Padres Farm Report (13 Jun 08)

Paul DePodesta has a list of Padres signings from the recently completed 2008 draft — mostly late guys; only three in the first 10 rounds so far…

  1. I don’t know any of those guys from the Dominican League Padres either, but the box score is worth checking out for 2 reasons:

    1. At one point, the Padres went with a battery of Pozo-Mozo. We can only pray that we see this in the bigs some day.

    2. The DSL Padres have a catcher named Hans Wilson…from Obregon, Mexico. Huh?

  2. I think Rymer Liriano was one of our more expensive signings.

  3. Looks like no call up for headley for the series with the Indians…

  4. #3@Steve C: The Indians are starting three really good lefties (Sowers, Lee, Sabathia) and Headley is batting just .262 with 1 HR in 65 AB’s against lefties. This would be a bad time. I’m guessing he’ll be called up before the Yankees series, though. They’ll likely be facing two right-handers, Rasner and Chamberlain, in that series.

And if Kouz continues to do nothing, especially against his former team against three lefties, maybe we’ll see Headley play some 3B against NY.

  5. #4@JMAR: hmm I figured they would want him there against the Lefties because Huber is hitting .205/.279/.308 against Lefties this year.

  6. #5@Steve C: The Padres aren’t going to decide Huber can’t hit lefties based on 44 plate appearances. They’re hopefully not going to call Headley up until they have a plan to get him consistent at-bats. Whether that means changing the current OF rotation, when the OF is hitting pretty well, or doing something with Kouz, who knows?

#4@JMAR: Sowers, really good? I wouldn’t expect us to worry about platoons against his soft stuff.

  7. #6@Tom Waits: Two great lefties + 1 average lefty = ‘three really good lefties’. It makes sense in my head, anyways. Plus, the Padres have been known to make soft-throwing lefties look really good.

Yeah, I definitely don’t expect a platoon in this game. Gerut needs to get at least one start against his former team and it would be nice to start the best possible defense in the outfield (Hairston in LF, Gerut in CF).

  8. #2@Richard Wade: Yup, it’s my understanding (based on comments at MadFriars) that Rymer Liriano is one of the main prospects on that DSL team … see yesterday’s comments for a few other names they have noted …
