DBacks down 3-1 going into the top of the 8th.
BTW, Air Supply sucks. Give me some Led Zep, or Stones.

This goes out to Chris Young……..I’m all out of love..i’m so lost without you…..
Let’s get a sweep of the M’s, and start turning things around. Because if things don’t change soon i could see the FO formally throwing in the towel soon.

“You can’t always get what you want…
You can’t always get what you want
But, if you try sometimes…
You get what you need!”
Let’s hope the FO doesn’t throw in the towel.
I already see this thread tonight going lyrical. Thanks GY. It’s all your fault.

it can’t be too late . . . believing for so long
CY come back! HELLLLLLLPP!!

OT: I’m not sure of the median age of the DS blog, but I vaguely remember the ’70s (mostly because I was stoned and tripping for most of the late ’70s) and I don’t recall anyone with those stupid wild afros (especially white guys). My hair was half way down to my butt. And, the disco bunnies all had Farrah Fawcet hairdoos and ‘Candies’ shoes with flavored lip gloss.
June 27, 2008 at 7:18 pm
#5@Turbine Dude: I still have hair halfway down my butt. I just dont have any on my head.
June 27, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Yes, it is possible for the other team, to leave runners all over the bases.
June 27, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Say what you want, I still like KK.
June 27, 2008 at 7:27 pm
#8@Turbine Dude: I like Tucker Ashford as well……sorry another flashback, I meant KK
June 27, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Tucker Ashford drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 1st round (2nd pick) of the 1974 amateur draft.
Schlom is there a statute of limitations if I want to add Ashford to your list ?
June 27, 2008 at 7:36 pm
#10@JP: LMMFAO!!!!!
June 27, 2008 at 7:40 pm
#10@JP: The less said about the Padres drafts, the better as far as I’m concerned.

Any reason why the Pads shouldn’t sign Wolf to a 2-yr. 20 mil. deal, or 3 yr. 25 mil. deal with a limited no-trade clause?
Chances are that either Peavy and CYoung will be out for a few starts during the year at some point, Maddux is retiring, and while the kids on the farm are promising, a reliable veteran’s presence would be invaluable on the staff.
Pads need to be proactive on this deal or they risk Wolf signing with the Yanks or any one of the other 29 teams that need a starter.
Then again, if they could get two or three mid-level prospects at the deadline for Wolf, I wouldn’t complain too much.

I did find out of something interesting from today’s discussion — basically a lot of you believe that if the reasoning behind a decision is good the result doesn’t matter. Personally, I think that’s crazy but what do I know?
June 27, 2008 at 7:50 pm
I think I actually just heard Matty V. say that there is “no upside in bringing Tomko back in here”
June 27, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Count me in with the “reasoning behind the decision” group. I’ve always preferred sound reasoning over poor reasoning when it comes time to make a decision. If you do your homework, more often than not the outcome will take care of itself.
June 27, 2008 at 7:56 pm
I prefer resoning and then make a decision. Then if it doesn’t work out, at least you can go back and learn from that.
If it is a knee-jerk action just to create a stimuli for another totally unknown action, I believe that is totally without merit.
June 27, 2008 at 8:00 pm
.500 will get you a share of first place in the NL West today and the Pads are 16 under. I like BBlack, but does anyone have a feeling that if Bochy were still the manager SA and KT might be directing a little bit more of their criticism toward the manager than is currently happening? Funny how you tend to shift the blame to other areas when the guy you chose is running things…
June 27, 2008 at 8:05 pm
#16@koo:
#17@Turbine Dude: That’s really surprising to me. Personally, I only care about the end result. Of course the reasoning is important but I’d rather have a good result with bad reasoning then the other way.
June 27, 2008 at 8:15 pm
I think what you’re referring to is called “luck.” And yes, most will agree that good luck is better than bad luck. But to the extent you can affect an outcome, good reasoning will ALWAYS trump poor reasoning.
June 27, 2008 at 8:23 pm
#18@koo: I think there’s more analysis of Black going on in the front office than anyone is publicly willing to admit.
June 27, 2008 at 8:25 pm
#20@koo: Absolutely. However, in reality, only the result matters, not the reasoning. That’s why don’t care nearly as much about the reasoning as the result.
June 27, 2008 at 8:26 pm
#19@Schlom: A good result is obviously the desired outcome. However, how you reach that outcome is a good barometer as to how you will try to achieve your next outcome. If it is willy-nilly, it should not be trusted. But, if a track record of thinking things through has netted you more positive results than negative, then that would be the way I would lean.
June 27, 2008 at 8:26 pm
#19@Schlom: Everyone would rather have a good result. The way to get more good results than the other guy is to have better decision-making.
And with that I go to bed, hoping that GameDay will look a lot different when I wake up.

What happens when you draft with an emphasis on hitting? Games like this …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....p;did=milb
… I *like* it! 16-15 … pow! I am bum’d that Colin Lynch (no relation) got his first Blown Save …
June 27, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Does anyone know why Jody Gerut is starting against left-handed pitchers? Are they expecting him to suddenly learn how to hit left-handed pitching at the age of 30? That certainly is optimistic. If your season isn’t going anywhere (and I think we all agree that it looks like the Padres aren’t going to contend this season) wouldn’t you be better off playing the younger guy? Not that Hairston is much younger (28 vs. 30).
June 27, 2008 at 8:54 pm
OT: Got my DS polo shirt in the mail today. Pretty nice except the smaller graphics are kinda hard to read.
June 27, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Faris with another *solid* outing at AA …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....p;did=milb
… 7 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 0 R, 3 Ks … nice.
June 27, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Can we have a contest to guess the exact date when the Barrett experiment, misadventure will end? My guess was June 2nd (three weeks ago), so I guess I don’t win. He still has a nice swing, but the bat speed is just not there (along with a few other important elements of his game). Hurts to leave 4 mil. on the table, but it’s only half as much as we lost with Edmonds. When Bard comes back, it’s time for the Pads to move on. If he was hitting his weight, there might be a team willing to offer us 500K, but that’s not going to happen with a guy hitting .181 who can’t throw anyone out.
June 27, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Tomko looked like poo-poo (tring not to get censored) against Sexson. And now just gave up a run.
June 27, 2008 at 9:02 pm
All of you who’d rather see Tomko pitching than Thatcher right now raise your hands. That’s what I thought. A few more moves like this and the front office will have to start looking in the mirror for the Pads dismal season. What’s most painful is that .500 baseball would put us right in the thick of things. The fact that we’re being shut out and outhit 11-3 by the worst team in baseball stings a touch, as well.
June 27, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Tomko looks like shit right now. (getting censored, I know)
June 27, 2008 at 9:07 pm
#31@koo: My friend, I agree. I just can’t wait to get out of inter-league play. The Padres have really never had a good record in that. I’m gonna take the glass half full attitude that once this is over, we’ll see a big turn around (crossing fingers).
June 27, 2008 at 9:08 pm
What was the move for Tomko, I didn’t see it on the espn.com transaction list.
June 27, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Chase just made this somewhat of a ballgame.
June 27, 2008 at 9:30 pm
The M’s have thrown ball 1 to Chase each of his 3 PAs tonight … just sayin’ …
June 27, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Storm boyz are playing powerball tonight …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_stoafa_1
… they are up 7-6 after 6 on the strength of HRs by Kulbacki (2 actually), Sogard, Canham.
June 27, 2008 at 9:38 pm
What did MattV say about Garvey’s retired number?
June 27, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Headley has a nice swing. Ball jumps off that bat of his. I will be nice seeing what this guy can do over the next year or so. We need about 2 or 3 other prospect position players now to appear and produce.
June 27, 2008 at 9:39 pm
#38@LynchMob: Inferred that it is a joke that Garv’s number is retired.
June 27, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Chip Ambres (28) has a combined OPS of over .920 over the last 1.5 years. I see absolutely no reason not to platoon him with Gerut (30) starting in mid- July or August.
Late in the game, against a lefthander, do we not want to occasionally pinch hit for Gerut with a guy that can then go out and replace him defensively w/o drop off.
June 27, 2008 at 9:54 pm
#41@JP: That’s if of course we don’t get a young prospect in here who is ready now. But if our aim is to find out about Gerut then we might as well see if Ambres can help us in a reserve role as well. Neither are full time starters but either or both could be valuable in the future.
June 27, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Here is where the Padres have lost most if not all of their games this year. I should plot this out on a graph and show it to the team and FO.
June 27, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Back to the lyric theme:
“Wastin’ away in SanDiegoville. Searching for my last shaker of runs. Some people say that it’s the players’ fault. But, I know…it’s the FO’s fault.”
OK, that was bad. I digress.
June 27, 2008 at 10:15 pm
ugh. so sick of losing.
and more tomko, seriously?
its such a downer since most of the games are very winnable.
June 27, 2008 at 10:19 pm
God, please get me out of inter-league hell!!!!
June 27, 2008 at 10:36 pm
I’ve been trying to somewhat avoid Padres news the last few days, but after getting home from seeing Wanted tonight, I check the boxscore and see Tomko….
Seriously? Tomko?
How many times and how often does this guy have to fail for us to quit signing him? What upside is there to having another horrible arm in the bullpen. Ledesma is probably better at this point…
I think at this point I’m going to pick a CFL team to cheer for! Go BC Lions!

Sorry for the double post.
June 28, 2008 at 1:37 am
#43@Turbine Dude: I bet they are aware.
June 28, 2008 at 3:35 am
26,41: The Padres have Hairston but not played him last night. What’s up?
He’s not starting, nor is he pinch hitting. Weird. I’m guessing Headley is the annointed LF but even he must rest a day/week, right?
I don’t know why the CF platoon is not going now. Then, again, I don’t understand the 12th arm nor the Tombko return.
June 28, 2008 at 4:46 am
#51@Didi: Its best not to think about it too much.
June 28, 2008 at 1:11 pm
#14@Schlom: Schlom, was getting rid of Jim Edmonds a mistake ? Just the facts/results please.
June 28, 2008 at 1:13 pm
#26@Schlom: I think the fact that we have Gerut starting against lefthanders and playing center field daily kind of tells you what kind of year its been so far….
