On the heels of an absolutely brilliant outing by Jake Peavy Saturday night, the Padres look to win the series against Cincinnati. They do so behind left-hander David Wells, who makes his first start for the Padres since returning to San Diego. Eric Milton goes for the Reds. Peter Friberg notes Milton’s extreme lefty/righty splits and suggests a lineup to counteract those. I expect we’ll see Mark Bellhorn at third base and Ben Johnson somewhere.
I will be out at Petco Park this afternoon, so you’re on your own today. Be excellent to each other, and go Padres!

Didn’t get to see the game last night (blame CFB), but was keeping the “auto-refresh” going on the Sprint phone!
Today’s the day: if Boomer wins the series for us, that’s another series win after losing the opener. This team is not good for one’s heart, and should come with a surgeon general’s warning.
Boomer blows this today and the calls for KT’s head will rain down.
Will be interesting to see the lineup Bocky puts out there - numbers would tell you to bench BG, but I think there’s about a 0.1% chance of Bochy favoring numbers over veterans.
September 3, 2006 at 1:38 pm
Wells looks fat but he still can ptich. Be interesting to see him hit. Typical Padres, ducks on the pond and no clutch hitting.
September 3, 2006 at 1:59 pm
Ok…I missed it..how did the Padres score the run?
September 3, 2006 at 2:04 pm
Quick noticing…
Obviously the Padres made out like bandits at the catcher position with everyone from Bowen to Piazza making their mark. However it is interesting that Miguel Olivo has certainly done something phenomenal in his year with the Marlins. Not only have the young arms of the Marlins been amazing which means someone has been calling some decent ball games, but Olivo is hitting at a .270 clip, has 14 HR and 49 RBI. His OBP is atrocious at .293, but his ability is definitely there for a club. Nice to see him have a chance to play after Pads turned their back on him.
September 3, 2006 at 2:17 pm
Matt, David Ross has also done really, really well this year (much better than Olivo, even). So, basically, every catcher except Mirabelli the Padres have touched recently has outproduced expectations hugely.
September 3, 2006 at 2:26 pm
This is good that we can make Eric Milton look like an ace. Very impressive.
September 3, 2006 at 2:29 pm
What in the hell is Hoffman thinking sending Wells on that play?
September 3, 2006 at 2:30 pm
($&%$#(&%$*%!!!
Fire G Hoffman!
That was inexcusable. The makings of a good 2out rally and he sends the slowest man in the stadium. Wells was out by a mile!!!
September 3, 2006 at 2:30 pm
What the heck? Why on earth is Glenn Hoffman sending David Wells’ gimpy leg home from second on a bloop like that? Shockingly, he was out by 10 feet.
September 3, 2006 at 2:31 pm
At least Wells was smart enough not to do something stupid like try and slide and end up blowing out his knee…
September 3, 2006 at 2:32 pm
On the bright side, the Dodgers are now down 7-2 to the Rockies.
September 3, 2006 at 2:45 pm
Olivo has been a below average hitting catcher this year.
September 3, 2006 at 2:46 pm
Also, catcher’s have shown no ability to affect the performance of their pitchers.
September 3, 2006 at 2:46 pm
Turning it over to the ‘pen - 6IP, 1R for Wells…not shabby, but the bats must wake up to make it count!
September 3, 2006 at 2:54 pm
Well, we hit Milton like we usually hit lefties… Encouragingly, Milton’s gone and Wells didn’t give up a bunch of runs (I didn’t think he would, but he could have…) and we’re now facing a RHP.
September 3, 2006 at 2:56 pm
Richard, a better way to state that, is that we’ve yet to find a correlation. Common sense suggests that a catcher could/should have some impact (at least minimally - is that a word?) we just haven’t found it yet… Though knowing you, I’d wouldn’t put it against you to be the one who does find it.
September 3, 2006 at 2:56 pm
re: 4 … I just heard on the radio that the Marlins are the first team since 1900-ish to get back to .500 after being 20 games below .500! I hadn’t noticed them in the rear view mirror … but if “mo” is any factor, then a team that’s played 20 games OVER .500 recently certainly has “mo” on their side going into a Sept push for the wild card!!! We’ve been warned …
September 3, 2006 at 2:57 pm
Richard -
Could you have said two more revealingly idiotic statements than what you just made? Want to talk about the Pads deep farm system, the efficiency of small market teams like the Royals and the wonderful presidency of G.W. Bush next?
September 3, 2006 at 2:58 pm
Richard … whassup with Lance posting this comment at your blog:
“next Top 100 Padres bio will be posted soon. Like today.”
Just checkin’
September 3, 2006 at 2:59 pm
Freel is a thief!!!!
September 3, 2006 at 3:01 pm
MattC - don’t go there without links to stats that show Olivo is not a below average hitting catcher this year and that catchers have an ability to affect the performance of their pitchers …
September 3, 2006 at 3:03 pm
football news but still important
KUSI news reporting that Charger LB Steve Foley was shot by an off-duty police officer.

September 3, 2006 at 3:03 pm
Cla back out for the 8th
Does he get many 1+ outings?
September 3, 2006 at 3:04 pm
Matt, don’t go there… Richard is correct with his statements. Anyone who is getting on base LESS than 30% of the time is not an offensive asset, PERIOD. And if catchers DID make a big difference (they make a small difference), we would be able to show it statistically. As of yet, we can’t.
Secondly, the Padres farm system does have some depth, what they don’t have, is impact players at the top.
Third, don’t get into politics, just don’t. It’s a recipe for disaster and Geoff wants us to “be excellent to each other.”
September 3, 2006 at 3:05 pm
24 was supposed to say “they MAY make a small difference…”
September 3, 2006 at 3:06 pm
Do you have any evidence that catchers affect the performance of their pitchers, Matt? See this study here for a compelling case against the influence of catchers on pitchers’ ERA:
http://www.baseballprospectus......icleid=432
And, here’s baseball prospectus saying that Olivo is 4 batting runs below average this year (under advanced batting statistics, BRAA).
http://www.baseballprospectus......mi01.shtml
So, Richard’s assertions are both, to the best of our current knowledge, correct.
September 3, 2006 at 3:09 pm
Sorry if this is a double post, but last time it apparently didn’t go through.
For a study indicating catchers have no impact on pitchers’ ERA, see: http://www.baseballprospectus......icleid=432.

re: Foley
Holy Crap!
I mean, seriously, holy crap!!
September 3, 2006 at 3:10 pm
In other news, Cla Meredith records two more scoreless innings. Padres pitching in this game all courtesy of Boston.
September 3, 2006 at 3:15 pm
I agree that Olivo has been decent, so to say that he’s totally not good is a bit off…
Foley, that’s messed up…
September 3, 2006 at 3:17 pm
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/st.....mp;sort=25 … by my counting this shows 11 catchers in the NL with more than 100 games … and Olivo is #8 in OPS … I know there’s more to the world than OPS … but OPS sure seems close enough & easy enough that I like it …
September 3, 2006 at 3:17 pm
BG needs to get more aggressive - 1st pitch was right down the middle and he had no intention of swinging
September 3, 2006 at 3:18 pm
re: 29 … I don’t see anybody saying he’s totally not good … probably half the catchers in the league are below average … ‘cept for the ones that play for Lake Wobegon
September 3, 2006 at 3:21 pm
Meredith with 37 pitches in 2 innings … that’s a lot … 24 for strikes … that’s good … 5 GBs and K … classic Cla! His ERA is now at 0.84 … awesome!
September 3, 2006 at 3:22 pm
Phillies won game 1 of DH vs Atlanta … now 1-1 in top 6th in game 2 …
September 3, 2006 at 3:23 pm
re: #34 - it’s not fair! Philly gets to play more games than we do!
September 3, 2006 at 3:24 pm
Bases loaded, 1 out, tie game, bottom 8. Cluctch time. Who will come up with the big hit? You Josh Bard?
September 3, 2006 at 3:24 pm
Majewski’s just off DL for shoulder problems … he was subject of “damaged goods” alegations between the Reds & Nats after their mid-season swap …
September 3, 2006 at 3:25 pm
Big hit, bad baserunning
September 3, 2006 at 3:26 pm
Nice clutch hit by Bard……brain dead running from Cameron..
September 3, 2006 at 3:26 pm
re: 35 … their real advantage is getting to play games with Ryan Howard … this just in: that guy’s got POP!
September 3, 2006 at 3:27 pm
So Hoffman sent Boomer and held Giles???
September 3, 2006 at 3:28 pm
The Bard speaketh!
September 3, 2006 at 3:30 pm
Are the Bells tolling at Petco? Oh ya!
September 3, 2006 at 3:31 pm
re: 41.. certainly looks that way…..it was a good decision to hold Giles with only 1 out…..it was Cameron who wasn’t paying attention and the center fielder wasn’t very deep when he got the ball..I think Giles would’ve been out by a mile….
September 3, 2006 at 3:35 pm
Hell yeah!
September 3, 2006 at 3:35 pm
Great pitching by Trevor to Griffey….
September 3, 2006 at 3:36 pm
Whew … I didn’t like going to a 3-1 count on Griffey … all’s well that ends well!!! Way to go, boys!
September 3, 2006 at 3:37 pm
I said it earlier and will again:
This team is NOT good for the heart!
September 3, 2006 at 3:37 pm
#472 … gotta think he’ll get there by the end of the season
September 3, 2006 at 3:38 pm
Dogs down to 6 outs … down 9-2 …
Philly still 1-1 after 6.5 …
September 3, 2006 at 4:34 pm
Vinny adds some insurance with a 2-run HR as Rox beat Dogs 12-5 … double yea
September 3, 2006 at 4:38 pm
Phils burning some bullpen … extra innings in game 2 of DH vs Braves … 1-1 into the 11th …
September 3, 2006 at 4:42 pm
Here’s the rotation for the incoming Rox …
Mon, Sep 4 9:05 pm EDT W. Williams vs. J. Fogg
Tue, Sep 5 10:05 pm EDT C. Young vs. J. Francis
Wed, Sep 6 10:05 pm EDT C. Hensley vs. J. Jennings
… we’re over-due to play well vs these guys, aren’t we?
I’ve got Josh Fogg on my roto team (don’t ask
) and he’s been BRUTAL his last 2 times out … and not much better the 6 before that!
September 3, 2006 at 5:05 pm
Phils lose … 3-1 in 11 … rah!
While looking at the box score for that game, I noticed Randall Simon got an AB … reminded me of “Sausagagate” … Wikipedia’s got a good page on the Sausage Races and a link to this clip from a Milwaukee news report on the incident … http://tinyurl.com/pb2nu … still just as funny as the day it happened!
September 3, 2006 at 6:51 pm
The Cardiac Kids are at it again. If we are to play in October I think Hoffy has to get the record this year.
Re: Foley…this stinks to high heaven…reading CNN and the police report, or listening to soundbites, it might sound like Foley is a villian. I read the reports differently and would love to have opinions… http://chargers.mostvaluablenetwork.com
September 3, 2006 at 6:55 pm
Here’s a trivia question … was reading the BP Transaction Analysis and it refer’d to Rudy Seanez as “Action Traction” … and sure enough, this web page confirms it … http://www.baseball-reference......ru01.shtml … so what’s it mean / how did it come about?
September 3, 2006 at 8:26 pm
RE: Post 57,
I think It has to do with Seanez’s absurd propensity for going on the DL, i.e. in “traction.” He’s been on the DL something like 11 times in his ML career. I think the “Action” part was a play on the movie title “Action Jackson”
September 3, 2006 at 8:53 pm
39, 40: Just finished watching the game on TiVo and what it doesn’t show is that Giles took an extremely aggressive turn at third on the base hit by Bard. He was well around the bag when he slammed on the brakes and retreated. Not really Cameron’s fault. Of course, none of this shows up on the telecast, but in person, it was pretty clear.
Oh yeah. Great win!

KT 1 - Fire KT! Crowd 0
September 4, 2006 at 8:19 am
In Olney’s blog yesterday, talking about the Pads and Mets in the opening series, he said he’d likely pick the Padres in the first round, because of the health of Martinez and Glavine. He also suggested that the Mets fans wouldn’t be quite so willing to give Piazza a standing ovation if it was a playoff setting.
