Looks as through there’ll be more pain
There’s gonna be a Showdown

Let’s kick some Dogger A**!
This article should get people pretty fired up. A couple of things got under my skin, to say the least.

You know what…Plaschke sucks…. How many people would rather live in LA than San Diego….I think it’s funny that someone like him from LA would downplay the Padres, considering that the padres are like 25+ games over .500 against the Dodgers in the last 25 years. Sure the Dodgers have won a world series in that time..but they haven’t had any success against us…
September 15, 2006 at 7:26 pm
Let’s go Padres….
September 15, 2006 at 7:26 pm
Beat LA!
September 15, 2006 at 7:29 pm
I hope fat and drunk David Wells no hits the dodgers tonight…then I hope someone ties down Plaschke and makes him eat that lame ass column he wrote today…
September 15, 2006 at 7:31 pm
Here’s an interesting preview of the series…

September 15, 2006 at 7:33 pm
Not to jinx the boys….but the Padres are 5-0 at Dodger Stadium this season…
September 15, 2006 at 7:33 pm
Ok..i’m done talking to myself…lets play some baseball..
September 15, 2006 at 7:34 pm
#1
that was the dumbest article ever
September 15, 2006 at 7:36 pm
Is it me, or does this feel like the playoffs already?
September 15, 2006 at 7:39 pm
I just don’t like all the hype of this series because it was a getaway day in Cincy gave them extra time to overanalyze every part of this series. Let these guys just play because they’ve been 10-4 in Sept.
September 15, 2006 at 7:39 pm
by the way: does anyone have a gameday audio account I can share with them for tonight, my mlb.tv has been spazzing for a bit.

Re: Iwamura for 3B
I live in Japan but know little about Iwamura. One thing I’ve noticed about Japanese pitchers, though, is that they get away with A LOT of mistake pitches that guys in the majors would hit out about 50% of the time (but the Japanese players only knock out about 20% of the time). Perhaps that explains why guys like Tuffy Rhodes (56 HRs a couple years ago), Andy Sheets — of Phil Nevin fame(18 this year), and a 2B slugger named Riggs (who, his profile says, played for the Pads and Dodgers — anyone know him?) is second in the league with 33 HRs and batting .300.
Iwamura is near the top in HRs, but how that translates into the majors is directly related to the number of batting practice pitches accountable for those HRs. Hopefully, KT takes that into account before signing him. Wouldn’t be hard to envision a Branyan-Iwamura platoon at 3rd, though.
Guys like Ichiro, Matsui and Jojima are pretty much the Babe Ruths and Dimaggios of Japan — once-every-40-years type players.
September 15, 2006 at 7:41 pm
Quick look at other contenders today:
Cin def ChC, 4-0
Fla def Atl, 6-4
Phi leads Hou, 4-3 in top 9th
StL leads SF, 13-4 in top 8th.
I love that last one.
September 15, 2006 at 7:43 pm
Leadoff walk to Roberts. Let’s see him take second — Maddux doesn’t hold runners well.
September 15, 2006 at 7:44 pm
Damn, so much for that idea. Nice tag by the SS.
September 15, 2006 at 7:45 pm
Yeah…definite playoff atmosphere…
September 15, 2006 at 7:47 pm
Not using Gameday audio today (at work). You’re welcome to it, Ryguy. Send me a mail at koolongg@yahoo.com
September 15, 2006 at 7:47 pm
good call unfortunately….he was out…
September 15, 2006 at 7:47 pm
Nice play for a fat pitcher….
September 15, 2006 at 7:49 pm
Lofton tries to sneak one past Gonzo. Good luck with that.
September 15, 2006 at 7:51 pm
So far, so good. Wells is way down in the strike zone, so far.
September 15, 2006 at 7:52 pm
Nice pick by Adrian at first. Two nice defensive plays by Adrian.
September 15, 2006 at 7:52 pm
Nomar hits the ball hard, but right at Walker, who throws a dying quail that Gonzo digs out to retire the side. Quick inning both sides.
September 15, 2006 at 7:53 pm
Plaschke = ass (fragment)
September 15, 2006 at 7:53 pm
Houston puts the leadoff man on 2nd Bot 9th, next hitter pops out
September 15, 2006 at 7:54 pm
Gonzalez vs Maddux: 1-for-5 career.
September 15, 2006 at 7:55 pm
bases loaded 1 out. vs Tom Gordon. Former Padre Humberto Quintero up, hopefully he can help us out a bit.
September 15, 2006 at 7:56 pm
Gonzo walks, Maddux drops an F-bomb. Cameron vs Maddux: .235/.278/.529 in 17 AB.
September 15, 2006 at 7:56 pm
As I write that in, he grounds into a double play.
September 15, 2006 at 7:56 pm
Humberto Quintero grounds into a bases loaded double play with one out. Phillies win
September 15, 2006 at 7:58 pm
wasn’t a grounder DP, was lined right to Maddux.
September 15, 2006 at 7:59 pm
Eric, I meant Quintero.
September 15, 2006 at 7:59 pm
Heckuva play by Maddux to end the inning. Due up for LA:
Kent: .500/.500/.583 in 12 AB vs Wells
Drew: 0-for-4, 2 K
Lugo :286/.318/.381 in 21 AB
September 15, 2006 at 8:01 pm
Nice pitch there to get Kent chasing off-speed down and away. Wells looks good tonight.
September 15, 2006 at 8:02 pm
Wells is a big game pitcher….
September 15, 2006 at 8:03 pm
Wells lives for crap like this…….
September 15, 2006 at 8:03 pm
The curve and change are working well for him so far.
September 15, 2006 at 8:03 pm
If David Wells weighs 245# I only weigh 125#
September 15, 2006 at 8:04 pm
Another quick inning for Boomer. He’s got everyone hitting off their front foot.
September 15, 2006 at 8:04 pm
in the last 4 years only 2 pitchers have won more games than David Wells in the month of September….. Roy Oswalt and Randy Johnson..
September 15, 2006 at 8:05 pm
Ry- oh.
Wells looks sharper than Maddux so far. 2 walks by Maddux shows his command is a bit off, and the pitch Cameron lined out on was up. Wells is hitting his spots and the only hit off him was a bleeder through the hole on an off-balance swing.
September 15, 2006 at 8:05 pm
#41: Okay, that’s impressive.
September 15, 2006 at 8:07 pm
Re: 43.. yeah..I’d say so…that stat is courtesy of Vin Scully….
September 15, 2006 at 8:07 pm
I think #39 is more impressive.
September 15, 2006 at 8:07 pm
Due up for SD:
Blum: .240/.269/.240 in 25 AB
Barfield: 2-for-5
Wells n/a
September 15, 2006 at 8:08 pm
Wells= big game pitcher
Maddux= not big game pitcher. His record in the playoffs is pretty pedestrian
39: I think they’re missing a digit off of that 245. Probably should be 1,245
September 15, 2006 at 8:08 pm
Well..I weigh 150#..so…i really don’t think Wells weighs less than 100# more than me..
September 15, 2006 at 8:08 pm
I heard Blum on XX today. He was told that Flannery said that he didn’t have a great arm, but had experience. Blum took exception, saying, “My arm is my strength. I’m a one tool guy.” Pretty funny, but sadly accurate.
September 15, 2006 at 8:10 pm
What’s sadder is that Blum’s arm is only strong if he’s playing 2B.
September 15, 2006 at 8:12 pm
I’m the same height as Wells (6′4″) and weigh 250. He’s got at least 30 pounds on me. But the fat man can pitch, that’s all that matters.
September 15, 2006 at 8:13 pm
Well, I think in honor of Mr. 245, I think we should start every comment tonight with “Well,”
September 15, 2006 at 8:14 pm
Well, considering how fast this game is going, it won’t last very long.
September 15, 2006 at 8:15 pm
Yep..Wells can most definitely pitch…
September 15, 2006 at 8:16 pm
Hey…it’s 8:15…the game started 45 minutes ago and Vin Scully is talking about all the cars just showing up for the game… I hate LA
September 15, 2006 at 8:17 pm
Well, Maddox not wearing a shirt under his jersey makes him look a little like a pedophile on CSI - Los Angeles.
September 15, 2006 at 8:17 pm
What’s up with all the grounders? I’m not complaining, but this isn’t what I’m used to seeing from Wells.
September 15, 2006 at 8:19 pm
It’s already the fourth inning? This game is flying.
September 15, 2006 at 8:23 pm
We should have activated Tony Gwynn for this game. He could probably still hit Maddux
September 15, 2006 at 8:30 pm
Dodgers draw first blood on an RBI double by Drew. Damage control here and then respond.
September 15, 2006 at 8:31 pm
Wells have been elevating his pitches more this inning. Puts us down 1-0.
September 15, 2006 at 8:34 pm
Wells is nibbling. Terrible throw home by Giles.
September 15, 2006 at 8:35 pm
Both guys are known control pitchers and they’ve been walking guys.. they must be getting squeezed somehow.
September 15, 2006 at 8:37 pm
Wells forgets Lugo is on second and he swipes third without a throw.
September 15, 2006 at 8:38 pm
#63: Maddux was missing with location early. Wells looked great until the walk to Kent. He clearly wanted nothing to do with Kent but hasn’t regained his location since then.
September 15, 2006 at 8:39 pm
Ok..lets get some runs…
September 15, 2006 at 8:39 pm
wake up that road offense, who is normally mashing.
September 15, 2006 at 8:59 pm
Maddux has found a serious groove. No-no through six.
September 15, 2006 at 8:59 pm
Can we at least get a hit?
September 15, 2006 at 9:00 pm
taking Wells out after 5 innings, 62 pitches?
September 15, 2006 at 9:03 pm
That’s a little odd, unless Wells was hurting.
September 15, 2006 at 9:04 pm
Looked like Nomar pulled up with a little limp there after he was thrown out at first.
September 15, 2006 at 9:09 pm
Nomar is done for the night. He left the dugout.
September 15, 2006 at 9:14 pm
While we’re all waiting for the Padres to get their first hit, here’s a pretty cool site I just found:
http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/
September 15, 2006 at 9:16 pm
And there it goes. Giles singles to right. Let’s get some runs now.
September 15, 2006 at 9:16 pm
Base hit!!
September 15, 2006 at 9:20 pm
I’m sorry. I’m all for Doug Brocail surviving that heart thing but I really hope he doesn’t make the postseason roster.
September 15, 2006 at 9:21 pm
and asI say that, something totally bad happens to him. damit. now I feel bad.
September 15, 2006 at 9:22 pm
Depending on the severity of that hamstring pull, there may be no question he doesn’t make the postseason roster.
September 15, 2006 at 9:22 pm
Well, he wouldn’t make it right now.
September 15, 2006 at 9:22 pm
why take out Wells so early and why bring in all our least reliable relievers in such an important close game?
September 15, 2006 at 9:22 pm
I said that pre-hamstring pull. and Eric, the reason you take out Wells there is because you donj’t know how many more chances you will have with Maddux pitching so well.
September 15, 2006 at 9:24 pm
well atleast now with Saenz hitting, we’ll get the LA bullpen. the one that blew leads in Chicago
September 15, 2006 at 9:24 pm
Where’s Danys Baez when you need him…
September 15, 2006 at 9:25 pm
Nomar hurt too. interesting signs
September 15, 2006 at 9:28 pm
please bring in Tomko
September 15, 2006 at 9:34 pm
Time to make Tower’s statement come true: The bullpens will decide the division.
September 15, 2006 at 9:41 pm
C’mon, Josh. Pretend it’s Fuentes out there.
September 15, 2006 at 9:43 pm
Anybody hear how Khalil’s batting practice went today?
September 15, 2006 at 9:44 pm
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/.....red=rss_sd
September 15, 2006 at 9:47 pm
Geez, Broxton’s stuff is filthy. I miss Baez.
September 15, 2006 at 9:48 pm
still cut the lead by a third. so, got three more outs.
September 15, 2006 at 9:51 pm
Is that Mike Thompson or Lars Ulrich?
September 15, 2006 at 10:01 pm
GY -
Is that an ELO reference? Man, thanks for making me feel very, very old.
Woulda been here sooner but we were using the internet to work on my daughter’s Chickasaw indians project. Priorities, you know?
September 15, 2006 at 10:03 pm
Brilliant catch by Cameron. Looks like he’s okay.
September 15, 2006 at 10:03 pm
Mike Cameron is a gamer…nice effort.
September 15, 2006 at 10:04 pm
As soon as that ball was hit and the crowd started cheering I knew Cameron would get to it. I love having him out there.
September 15, 2006 at 10:05 pm
BG: You are correct, sir. It’s raining all over the world.
September 15, 2006 at 10:10 pm
I’d really like a split in this series, even if that means the Padres aren’t taking the lead it’s all okay because the Padres would still control their own destiny with that 1 more game they have to play than the Dodgers.
September 15, 2006 at 10:10 pm
Man, Saito is unreal.
September 15, 2006 at 10:12 pm
Tonight, the longest night.
September 15, 2006 at 10:13 pm
give Maddux credit that this was more of a game of him stepping up and beating up the Padre bats for this game. Plus the Dodgers I guess figured out how to hold leads (key: Brett Tomko doesn’t touch the mound).. but I really think a split would be great for this 4 game set even though we’re down 0-1.
Hopefully the bats come out tomorrow.
September 15, 2006 at 10:14 pm
Padres are now 5-14 in the first game of a series since the All Star Break (stat courtesy of Peter Freberg at Padres Rundown)
September 15, 2006 at 10:17 pm
Bummer of an outcome. #102 hit the nail on the head. Sure would’ve been nice to steal that first one, but we’ll come back and get ‘em tomorrow night.
September 15, 2006 at 10:22 pm
I still think we can take three out of four with any luck…I didn’t expect a sweep. I just love that we are playing for the division on Sept. 15th in consecutive years…’course, I’d love consecutive flags more…
September 15, 2006 at 11:09 pm
Dude, Mark-O (#5 & 7) you DID jinx us!
September 16, 2006 at 8:42 am
