Ladies and gentlemen, I present the Padres’ new secret weapon, the venerable Manny Alexander. Now that one of the few people in baseball who can make Geoff Blum look like an offensive dynamo is on the roster, the Dodgers don’t stand a chance.
Wilson Betemit? Yeah, right. We’re going all the way, baby!

August 21, 2006 at 6:23 pm
Stauffer is pitching tonight.
August 21, 2006 at 6:32 pm
chan ho has the same symtoms as before (internal bleeding), the padres optioned Adkins to bring up Stuaffer.
I wonder why they are not D/Ling Chan Ho, let the guy rest for 15+ days.
August 21, 2006 at 6:42 pm
I hope CHP is alright, internal bleeding seems pretty serious.
August 21, 2006 at 6:51 pm
GY - (OT) … thanks for the link last Friday to the Board Game site … interesting stuff … lemme know if/when you get PR and how you like it … you should put a link to that site up here so we don’t forget it, seems like a site worth promoting a bit.
August 21, 2006 at 7:06 pm
I like Giles hitting #2 and Walker #3 …
August 21, 2006 at 7:06 pm
hey uh
Tim Stauffer is still alive.
August 21, 2006 at 7:09 pm
I think I’m scheduled to start on Wednesday the way things are going…
August 21, 2006 at 7:13 pm
Payton with #10 tonight … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260821114
August 21, 2006 at 7:14 pm
hmm..Stauffer. That seems questionable. Why not bring up Sweeney for a spot start? Considering the importance of this series, I would have thought that they would bring someone up who has had recent success.
That said, I hope Stauffer finds himself and pitches a nice shutout.
August 21, 2006 at 7:16 pm
I mean I know it’s all well and good but someone’s gotta get Boch off of Brocail’s bandwagon, I mean the guy hasn’t done well for himself and the only reason Adkins was sent down is cause he still has options.
August 21, 2006 at 7:16 pm
Dann … Sweeney just pitched yesterday … http://tinyurl.com/zo9yv
August 21, 2006 at 7:16 pm
Hey…a 1, 2 3 first inning for Stauffer… only needs to do that 6 or 7 more times tonight…
August 21, 2006 at 7:17 pm
Nice start for Stauffer …
- R. Furcal grounded bunt out to third
- K. Lofton grounded out to shortstop
- N. Garciaparra grounded out to shortstop
… my hopes aren’t high … he’s not done well @ AAA … but perhaps the Dogs don’t have a good/current scouting report
Pitches-strikes - T Stauffer 10-5.
Ground balls-fly balls - T Stauffer 3-0.
Batters faced - T Stauffer 3.
August 21, 2006 at 7:18 pm
OTOH … he’s gonna have to throw more than 50% strikes to get 5-6 more innings like that in …
August 21, 2006 at 7:19 pm
LM,
About that shirt… not a Cubs fan, but definitely a Wrigley fan. But I was under the mistaken impression that Geoff had gotten us tickets in the RF bleachers, so it seemed appropriate to wear a bleacher bum shirt.
And the message on the back, “Shut Up and Drink Your Beer,” always gives off a warm, fuzzy vibe.
August 21, 2006 at 7:19 pm
10 pitches per inning…would only be 90 for a complete game…
August 21, 2006 at 7:20 pm
A’s pitcher Dan Haren gives up 9 runs tonight … all earned … for the W … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260821114
August 21, 2006 at 7:21 pm
Unless we were carrying too many relievers, we should have just put Chan Ho on the DL. Now that his problem has come up again, I don’t suppose he is going to to pitch again until they know for sure what’s wrong with him.
August 21, 2006 at 7:23 pm
dprat - I want you, in that shirt, sittin’ in front of Lance at next year’s BP Pizza Feed
I’m a Wrigley fan also … not been there for a game, but drove around it when I was in Chicago in March of 1983 … just had to get near it!
August 21, 2006 at 7:25 pm
I gotta admit, that Dog lineup has improved … with Martin in the #8 hole, that’s strong!
August 21, 2006 at 7:27 pm
Padres RunDown fave, Will Venable debuts at #3 on Baseball America’s Prospect Hot Sheet.

August 21, 2006 at 7:28 pm
Fine top of 2nd …
J.D. Drew flied out to center
- J. Kent struck out looking
- A. Ethier flied out to right
Pitches-strikes - C Billingsley 9-6; T Stauffer 20-12.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Billingsley 0-2; T Stauffer 3-2.
Batters faced - C Billingsley 3; T Stauffer 6.
… hmmm, 9 pitch 1st for Billingsley … bleh!
August 21, 2006 at 7:32 pm
PF - you scoop’d me on teh PHS this week
… and I remember you were *very* high on Braun in the ‘05 draft … he’s looking on his way to MLB (In the Team Photo).
August 21, 2006 at 7:33 pm
Any chance we might be able to pick up David Wells? Rumor on ESPN.com by Olney has him clearing waivers.
August 21, 2006 at 7:33 pm
Good news … we got Billingsley to throw 10 pitches in the 2nd …
Pitches-strikes - C Billingsley 19-13; T Stauffer 20-12.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Billingsley 0-4; T Stauffer 3-2.
Batters faced - C Billingsley 6; T Stauffer 6.
August 21, 2006 at 7:36 pm
I think Tim Stauffer is wearing Josh Barfield’s eyebrows.
August 21, 2006 at 7:37 pm
LOL, Anthony. According to the TV guys, he’s also pitching on short rest.
August 21, 2006 at 7:38 pm
He seems to have gotten over his tendency to get cuffed around early, at least for this one game. Great job so far.
August 21, 2006 at 7:42 pm
anyone keeping track of how many times Vin Scully says “by the way”?
August 21, 2006 at 7:44 pm
And now he has the first hit of the game.
August 21, 2006 at 7:47 pm
Lynch, I went looking for a college hitters in march/April and was talking about Braun before BA started their in-depth draft coverage (and thus before they started talking about him). BA did release their top 100 (or was it top 50) college players before the season and he was low on that list… I thought Ryan was someone we might target with the 14th or 35th picks. But he played himself into a top 5 pick. I still feel like he’s MY prospect. Good to see him doing well. - Plus, I’m a huge ‘Cane fan in CFB so it’s nice to see a UM player doing well.
August 21, 2006 at 7:49 pm
Giles needs to shorten up that stroke. I know hes been doing well recently but he has to close his stance and lead with his body and not his hands. THat groundout, he led his hands through th ehitting zone trying to barely make contact and when he could lead with his body and drive the ball is the other option.
August 21, 2006 at 7:52 pm
Is there a Vin Scully drinking game? I remember when you could count on several “Candy Maaal-do-nad-oooh”s every game.
August 21, 2006 at 7:52 pm
Thru 3 …
Pitches-strikes - C Billingsley 44-26; T Stauffer 28-19.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Billingsley 2-5; T Stauffer 6-2.
Batters faced - C Billingsley 11; T Stauffer 9.
… let’s see how Tim does after running the bases … it does impact pitchers … especially pitching on short rest!
August 21, 2006 at 7:54 pm
Here’s a link to Stauffer’s last start … http://tinyurl.com/ooc3k … Aug 17th … yup, just 3 days rest …
August 21, 2006 at 7:54 pm
If you had to do a shot every time he said “by the way” most anyone would be pretty messed up by this point in tonights game..
August 21, 2006 at 7:59 pm
Not to rain on a promising start…. but pull Stauffer now. Got to see one Beavers game when I was in Portland in mid-July and Stauffer looked absolutely electric the first eight batters - few were even getting a piece of the ball. Then had 8 baserunners (but only gave up 3 runs) in getting the next 5 outs before being pulled.
August 21, 2006 at 8:03 pm
dprat,
I don’t see why managers don’t try to piece together games from pitchers more often. If a manager knows that a Stauffer or Chan Ho Park is very good for 3-4 innings, but not much more, why not have Stauffer, Chan Ho Park and Clay Hensley pitch three innings each in a game? That combo wouldn’t work tonight, of course, but that would be the general idea.
August 21, 2006 at 8:05 pm
Tough inning …
- R. Furcal grounded out to shortstop
- K. Lofton singled to center
- N. Garciaparra flied out to deep center
- J.D. Drew walked, K. Lofton to second
- K. Lofton to third, J.D. Drew to second on passed ball
- J. Kent singled to center, K. Lofton and J.D. Drew scored, J. Kent to second on center fielder M. Cameron’s throwing error
- A. Ethier grounded out to first
Pitches-strikes - C Billingsley 44-26; T Stauffer 49-29.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Billingsley 2-5; T Stauffer 8-3.
Batters faced - C Billingsley 11; T Stauffer 15.
… he should be able to 2 more … but not much more …
August 21, 2006 at 8:19 pm
Interesting way to score a run. I say we give Barfield an RBI for getting hit by that throw.
August 21, 2006 at 8:20 pm
Walker would’ve been safe anyways despite the horrrendous slide..
August 21, 2006 at 8:20 pm
Thru 4 …
Pitches-strikes - C Billingsley 73-41; T Stauffer 49-29.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Billingsley 3-6; T Stauffer 8-3.
Batters faced - C Billingsley 17; T Stauffer 15.
.. me thinks Billingsley ain’t goin’ 9 tonight!
August 21, 2006 at 8:26 pm
What’s gotten into Piazza? He made a great throw yesterday too.
Nice job by Little, running himself out of the inning. Why get tricky with the pitcher up there?
August 21, 2006 at 8:26 pm
On the ESPN broadcast, they talked about Bochy going to Barfield and making sure his head was right for the game. Barfield assured him it was. Sounds like a gamer.
August 21, 2006 at 8:28 pm
Thanks, Russ! (for the CS)
Thru 4-1/2 …
Pitches-strikes - C Billingsley 73-41; T Stauffer 59-36.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Billingsley 3-6; T Stauffer 8-4.
Batters faced - C Billingsley 17; T Stauffer 18.
… I’m not sure of the bully status … but I’d be inclined to PH here for Stauffer … dprat’s warning is still valid!
August 21, 2006 at 8:29 pm
Kevin,
That kind of management makes too much sense. Cannot be found in THE BOOK.
You do occasionally see that kind of thing in playoff games; would be good to see it in games where there is a tomorrow - as you note, with pitchers who see their success drop sharply the second time through, and especially if those pitchers have strongly divergent styles.
August 21, 2006 at 8:36 pm
Thank you, Mr. Drew. We needed a break.
August 21, 2006 at 8:41 pm
Roberts stole his 36th base of the season. He is 36-for-40 (90 percent). Again, he is having a career year at 34 years old (33 on opening day). … No Padres player has stolen 40 bases since Bip Roberts in 1990.
August 21, 2006 at 8:41 pm
I love Gonzo’s footwork at first base.
August 21, 2006 at 8:42 pm
Walker now showing some glovework.
August 21, 2006 at 8:44 pm
Billingsley is done. Could be good news for Padres.
August 21, 2006 at 8:45 pm
Wow, nice top of 6th … thru 5-1/2 …
Pitches-strikes - C Billingsley 95-56; T Stauffer 66-42.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Billingsley 3-7; T Stauffer 11-4.
Batters faced - C Billingsley 22; T Stauffer 21.
August 21, 2006 at 8:46 pm
Dessens comes in with a 2.25 ERA …
August 21, 2006 at 8:46 pm
I cannot believe Cameron got three out of that one.
August 21, 2006 at 8:47 pm
Dessens, iirc, was a WBC teammate of Adrian and Vinny …
August 21, 2006 at 8:55 pm
Nice job, Tim!
C’mon bully … let’s close out a W for the guy!!!
August 21, 2006 at 8:56 pm
Embree in for Stauffer, who did a beautiful job tonight in less-than-ideal circumstances.
August 21, 2006 at 8:58 pm
Count me as another who was very impressed by Stauffer tonight. I still think that he’s got a decent chance to be a mid-rotation major league pitcher.
August 21, 2006 at 8:59 pm
Embree really needs to stop grooving 0-2 fastballs. I don’t care if he’s throwing mid-90s; big leaguers can hit those.
August 21, 2006 at 9:03 pm
I don’t see how Stauffer could have regressed as bad as he has at AAA this year and still have a chance to be an average MLB pitcher … I’ll root for that … but I gave up expecting that back in April …
August 21, 2006 at 9:06 pm
Cla Meredith continues to bring it.
August 21, 2006 at 9:08 pm
Now *that* is a “save” … by Cla
August 21, 2006 at 9:08 pm
That’s probably the only batter Meredith faces tonight, so I’ll take this opportunity to point out how destructive he’s been on RHB: counting Martin’s ground out to end the seventh, they’re hittting .069/.069/.115 against him in 61 PA. Yep, that’s a 184 OPS.
August 21, 2006 at 9:09 pm
Now … PH for Meredith? Hmmm, not obvious …
August 21, 2006 at 9:09 pm
On the ESPN broadcast, they talked about how Peavy begged Bochy to start tonight, guaranteeing a win. I think Bochy made the right choice. I’m starting to think Sutcliffe is not that bad, although he’s funnier when he’s wasted.
August 21, 2006 at 9:10 pm
GY … just to illustrate how low that OPS is … it’s lower than Vinny’s!
August 21, 2006 at 9:11 pm
Wonder why no double-switch when bringing Meredith?
August 21, 2006 at 9:12 pm
Good point, usually Bochy wakes up double-switching.
August 21, 2006 at 9:13 pm
Giles crushed that ball. Breathing room is nice. Let’s get more.
August 21, 2006 at 9:14 pm
Uh, never mind. What was Giles thinking?
August 21, 2006 at 9:14 pm
re: 65…I was just saying to my wife last Monday night that Sutcliffe is a lot more tolerable when you only hear him once a week or so. It was when he was on every night that he was annoying. I’m still stuck listening to Vin Scully who has said “by the way” 125 times tonight…
August 21, 2006 at 9:14 pm
I’d like to apologize to Tim Stauffer, to his parents, grandparents, descendants here or yet to be, and all his kith and kin.
August 21, 2006 at 9:14 pm
“BY THE WAY”…what was Giles thinking?
August 21, 2006 at 9:16 pm
San Francisco 3-0 in the 8th..
August 21, 2006 at 9:17 pm
Scully is still my favorite announcer. … That steal attempt by Giles was the textbook definition of “ill-advised.”
August 21, 2006 at 9:18 pm
Scully isn’t bad…I just think it’s funny that he says “by the way” about every 10 minutes.
August 21, 2006 at 9:23 pm
Linebrink found a new way to not have a 1-2-3 inning. But we’ll take it. Why can’t Meredith be the setup guy?
August 21, 2006 at 9:24 pm
Yeah, Scully rocks. Nobody tells a story like him.
You know what else rocks? Linebrink working an uneventful eighth. That’s more like it!
August 21, 2006 at 9:25 pm
For the same reason that Linebrink couldn’t be the setup guy early last year when Aki was struggling.. Linebrink gets the 7th..Aki the 8th, trevor the 9th…
Bochy is like Reggie Jackson in the Naked Gun…until someone pushes the button to get him out of the trance..he’s going to stick with the program..
August 21, 2006 at 9:25 pm
And a streak is broken…Linebrink’s first appearance without giving up a hit since July 9th (15 straight games)
August 21, 2006 at 9:27 pm
Linebrink had his first HBP of the season though. … I agree, Mark. It takes a lot for Bochy to change the batting order during the season, too. It’s a major move for him to move Giles around a little.
August 21, 2006 at 9:28 pm
Scully can get weird with names though sometimes, he keeps calling Wilson Betemit “Bet-a-meet”, I thought it was “Bet-a-mitt”.
August 21, 2006 at 9:30 pm
Not sure what the correct pronunciation is, but Vasgersian and Gwynn are calling him “Bet-a-MEET” as well.
August 21, 2006 at 9:31 pm
Scully is right. Bet-a-meet would be the way it’s pronounced in the Dominican.
August 21, 2006 at 9:31 pm
I hear bells all the way up here in Oregon!
August 21, 2006 at 9:32 pm
We must have three different broadcast going here.
August 21, 2006 at 9:34 pm
Hoffman: first save opportunity since Aug. 12
August 21, 2006 at 9:35 pm
Changeup, Drew K. Death.
August 21, 2006 at 9:35 pm
J.D., say hello to icky. Now say goodbye.
August 21, 2006 at 9:37 pm
Room service ground ball. Double play. Taxes … Hoffman.
August 21, 2006 at 9:38 pm
Sweet! One down, two to go…I think I’ll blame the Careys for Bet-a- mitt, I thought that’s how they were pronoucing it earlier this year on TBS…according to the poll they showed on KCAL, 87% of viewers think Grady Little should be Manager of the Year (2nd - Randolph 8%, 3rd - Narron 5%). If Grady Little wins manager of the year, Red Sox fans will be sure to check the weather forecast in hell for light snow flurries. Personally, if Florida comes within 5 games of .500, you have to give it to Giradi, right? I mean, that’s a team that was supposed to lose 100+.
August 21, 2006 at 9:38 pm
Hoffman: 32 saves this season, 468 in his career, 10 behind Lee Smith.
August 21, 2006 at 9:39 pm
First the echo of bells … then the echos of cheers!
A good game to win … aaaaahhhhhh!
August 21, 2006 at 9:40 pm
I don’t Grady Little is a good manager. I think the Dodgers are quite good because of their front office. … It’s hard to give it to a manager who is below .500.
August 21, 2006 at 9:42 pm
They’re talking to Stauffer on the TV postgame. He found out around 11:30 a.m. that he might get the call and arrived in SD on a flight from Portland at 5 p.m. What a stud.
August 21, 2006 at 9:44 pm
Dewon with a rough outing for Portland tonight … http://tinyurl.com/h4xka … but before tonight, I’d have thought he’d be the better callup (vs Stauffer, not Sweeney).
August 21, 2006 at 9:46 pm
Oh yeah, I don’t think there’s a shot in hell they give it to Girardi for real, I would assume Randolph is probably the winner. But I would give it to him, if only for telling Jeffery Loria to shut the hell up.
August 21, 2006 at 9:48 pm
Hey, you guys that watch’d the Storm yesterday … whatdya think of Headley and Hundley?
August 21, 2006 at 9:51 pm
Nice game for the Emeralds tonight … http://tinyurl.com/gd2os … 2 hits and a walk for Antonelli in 5 PAs … but still no power … Huffman’s HR #8 tells me it’s not park-effects …
August 21, 2006 at 9:57 pm
Yeah, the Reds guy wouldn’t be a bad choice, either. But let’s face it: these guys are managing in the new junior circuit.
August 21, 2006 at 10:13 pm
Despite the fact that I’d like a 3rd base solution sooner rather than later, and that Chase is my favorite Padre prospect, I hope that they have him on the Josh Barfield path instead of the Khalil Greene path. I know Headley is more comparable to Greene age-wise, but I just think he could use a year at each level to refine his skills. Obviously the power and plate discipline are there, but I think he c
