Second place Snakes are in town (but not on a plane, although I guess they probably were at some point) for the weekend. Padres get their first look at fomer would-be-first-overall-pick shortstop Stephen Drew (.321/.359/.560 in 109 AB) and San Diego native Carlos Quentin (.250/.342/.547 in 64 AB). Lord help us if the Diamondbacks ever find any pitching; there is some outstanding young offensive talent in that organization.

The wife is taking me to Island Prime for dinner tonight, so you’re on your own for this one. Be excellent to one another, and let’s get us a win. Go Padres!

Sean Burroughs was released.. oh how the mighty have fallen.

    Bye-Bye Burroughs

The Rays quietly released third baseman Sean Burroughs on Monday.

The first-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 1998 was hitting just .214 with a home run and 11 RBI in 37 games for the Triple-A Durham Bulls.

Burroughs came to the Rays in the offseason for pitcher Dewon Brazelton in a trade of former first-round busts. A sore lower back prevented him from making the team out of spring training, and he certainly didn’t distinguish himself during his brief stint with the Rays, hitting just .143 in 21 at-bats.

Burroughs would be perfect for the Padres.

I didn’t hear anything. Where’s Greene, not that I missed him after Blum got that hit?

  8. Posted August 18, 2006 at 7:38 pm | Permalink

AP notes: Khalil Greene was held out of the lineup Friday because he is still bothered by a sprained middle finger on his left hand. Although manager Bruce Bochy said Greene is day to day, he did not rule out Greene going on the DL. … Rookie 2B Josh Barfield’s grand slam in Thursday’s 8-4 loss to San Francisco was the Padres’ ninth pinch-hit grand slam and the first by a rookie.

even though they’re winning, this is still a sad showing by the bats.

GY, how’d you like Island Prime? I’ve eaten there a couple of times before. I thought the food was good, but the best part was the view of the city. Incredible and makes you appreciate how great it is to live in San Diego, regardless of the Padres record. On another note, I, being the eternal optimist, sent in my deposit for post-season play. I actually did it prior to last night’s win. It wasn’t so much that I was confident of making the post-season. Rather it was because I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if they made the post-season and I didn’t have tickets. Ahhhhh, the life of a Padre fan. (SIGH!)

LaMar, you hit the nail on the head re: Island Prime. For food quality, nothing in town beats Molly’s, but Island Prime matched them in terms of overall experience. This was my first time there, and I’ll be back (albeit not very soon — can’t exactly eat there all the time!).
